During the German invasion of the Netherlands the Dutch Army of WW2 fought against the Germans. What about the Dutch Army of WWII? That is what you will learn in this video. Netherlands during World War Two is mostly a story of occupation. Yet, during the German invasion of Holland in 1940 the Dutch troops fought fierce for several days. What did the soldiers of the Royal Netherlands Army (Koninklijke Landmacht) wore. What was the Dutch uniform of WW2 like?

Great video. Helmet badge provides aiming point for snipers. Not unique, Danish troops felt similarly vulnerable. More psychological than anything, because although it's a prominent aiming point for an expert, for most troops, they wouldn't have the time nor inclination to notice it.

This is so cool. My great grandfather had a leadership position in the Dutch army in the early 20th century through WW2. His son, my great- uncle, was in the Dutch army during Indonesia. It would be cool to find old military records about them, but since I do not know the Dutch language, there's a challenge with that lol. Thank you for your content

Fantastic videos on your channel! I am a Dutch-American living historian building a 1940 Royal Netherlands Army impression for a now postponed 80th Battles of France and Low Countries tactical reenactment. I especially enjoyed your exploration of the Battle of Zeeland, never knew that part of the history. I am working on my period camp details and wonder if there were flags other than the national Dutch tricolor present in OP/CP/HQ billets. Was there a period RN Army standard? I am looking to get an accurate eproduction made. Thank you from the former Nieuw Amsterdam and Bruecklen.

Great video. The issue with the helmet badge, is all about providing an easy and large aiming pointing, thats all. Realistically at battle ranges, it would only help a marksman or sniper. Have you seen the Danish movie '9th May'? You will see a good example of bicycle troops in action.

02:36 From what I understand the original helmet did not always have paint covering the bronze coloured plate and troops were afraid the plate would make them stand out so they started removing it or painting it over. That's the case for the army at least. The maritime infantry (Marines or 'het korps mariniers') didn't have a lionplate but a small anchor emblem to show their maritime tradition, the problem was to secure the anchor to the helmet a small hole was drilled to secure it and the troops did fear that this made caused the helmet to lose it's integrity and protection.

About bicycle infantry and cavalry (mentioned at 6:30). During WW2 ALL armies used both bicycle infantry and cavalry. Just some more than others. Japan who had about 50,000 bicycle troops early in the war. Germany also used this type of unit for their greater mobility without spending fuel. ALL Finish soldier were trained in the use of skies and bikes. The Allies used infantry on bikes to a lesser extent, but DID have infantry equipped with bikes. Including paratroopers. Although the heyday of cavalry was over, most armies had some cavalry units. There is a MYTH that Polish calvalry charged German tanks in '39. In 1939 10% of the Polish Army was on horseback. BUT most were infantry on horseback, and the lance was ceremonial. During the Polish campaign the Poles actually had some succes using these units.

My granddad hated those puttees/ beenwindsel. A real drag to put them on. He never forgot that before the war, he and his unit had to march from Zwolle to Kampen. No, trucks were not available (too expensive, due to the economic crisis of the 1930's). He hated that march as well. He fought on the Grebbeberg, last defense strongpoint of the Dutch, but he never told me the details.

I think your helmet is a m34 (or called a m33 nowadays ) because the m27 mostly had dark green paint (not always) and are less 'curved'. Edit : I have read that most lion plates were probably removed before they were captured since they did not want to surrender it to the Germans . Little did they know that they would be aloud to keep most of the times (along with their gasmask and canteen).

The Dutch Army suffered from budget cut during the 1930's, due to the devastating economic crisis and the socialist party was anti-military. If your think that umemploment benefits were cut, due to the lack of money. It makes sense that people were again money for the military. Nevertheless it the DA was 10 divisions strong. The DA not only lacked modern artillery, but also tanks. The DA tested one of two Renault FT-17 tanks, but one tank bogged down in the soft Dutch polder soil. So the DA believed that the soft Dutch soil would stop tanks and no Dutch tanks were necessary.

Hey man love your videos, you are well informed, and you state the facts correctly, you have a very good grasp of history, The Dutch Army and Marines did a tremendous amount of damage to the Germans during this short conflict, The Germans did not expect the Dutch Response to be so vicious, and deadly, I spoke with a man years ago that was a German Paratrooper, during the invasion of The Netherlands, his company was almost completely wiped out, in two days, he told me the Dutch Soldiers were very good shots, and their Mortars were constantly firing at them, he was wounded and captured, along with the few survivors of his company, his Battalion retreated three times, and were cut off and machine gunned by Dutch Aircraft, and they ended up fleeing back to the German lines.

The first properly designed combat uniform and equipment in the Dutch Army appeared in the nineties after the fall of the Wall. The uniform of 1940 looks very uncomfortable and not very soldier like. You also see a mix of leather and canvas equipment. No unity in design.The mess kit doesn't seem made of quality material. And was there no rain gear, groundsheet, sleeping bag and tent half? So how did they stay out in the field? If you are drafted and are issued with inferior personal equipment, that must have influence on your fighting effectiveness. Together with the lack of proper training and leadership you don't stand a chance.
@HistoryHustle
@HistoryHustle 4 жыл бұрын
What can I say. Spot-on. I do like the design but yeah, not very soldier like haha. Actually the rucksack did exist, also tent gear but these were seperated or something. Considering the fact the NL is very small in size, there was always a farm nearby to crash. I know there used to be extended equipment but my knowledge of that - as well as photographic material I could find - is limited.

Sleeping bags? Every WW2 army used blankets. The US Army issued up to 5 blankets in winter. Only the Germans gave sleeping bags to their troops in Northern Norway. The main problem is the Dutch Army was the lack of modern equipment (no tanks and obsolete artillery) and the lack of mobility. No halftracks or trucks. Nevertheless the DA was 10 divisions strong.
