Absolutely ridiculous, he is prohibited from getting his jersey retired because he played in Baltimore for 1 year, unless he makes the MLB HOF. Top 5 in franchise history in so many categories, but using rules established before the advent of free agency when guys playing for same team whole career was more likely than not.

@@kevincoady5248 That is no longer true, although it used to be. The Sox no longer have specific criteria for retired numbers. Pedro's number is retired, he didn't finish his career in Boston. Pesky's number is retired, he's not in the HOF. Same with Ortiz. There is no longer ANY reason for not retiring #24. NONE!

Dewey was criminally unappreciated with respect to his Hall of Fame candidacy. I know that some of the counting stats don't quite measure up (hits/average/AS games), but to have hit the most HR in the AL during the 80's, 8 gold gloves, 5 times in the top 11 in MVP voting - those are considerable feats. Now that Baines got in - and Vizquel is likely to get in - hopefully Dewey gets some love from the Veterans' Committee someday.

@@dbdmack Right. Oritz and Pesky also have had their numbers retired by the Sox. According to MLB, the Sox no longer have specific criteria for retiring numbers. In my opinion, all the more reason #24 belongs on the wall.

In 1983, I waited patiently just outside the Oakland - Alameda airport bar, where the team had sat down for about an hour before boarding, after playing the Oakland A's, of course. Every player seemed to have a built-in bar routine. Yastrezemski and 3 other players sat together at one table, the playing cards came out, and a hand was automatically being dealt. Seeing Carl with a beer & a cigarette felt like a secret moment to witness. The players all got up to leave. Dwight Evans was coming & I literally stepped in his path holding a folded Sporting News paper with Yastrezemski on the cover. I said nothing, holding a pen up. Evans took the pen and signed the cover without saying a word. I felt so rude stopping him for an autograph. Who was I to be so presumptuous? What I remember was the enormous width of his chest. You really notice a professional athlete's build in street clothes. Then my childhood idol, Carl Yastrezemski, came walking in the same path. Now I felt like a criminal stepping in his path to stop. If I was 10, okay. But I was 25. 🙄 And this was his final year, and final game in Northern California. He signed it. Happened to be his birthday too. I said "Thank you, sir." What could I possibly say that he'd want to hear? A memorable part of my team stalking to the airport was sitting on a barstool next to 3 players watching Sunday game highlights on the bar television, and listening to their whispered criticisms.

Dwight was the total ball player. Hitting running arm was the best I ever saw. 1975 he saved game 6 off joe morgan fly to the wall. I know I was 3 rows in I thought the ball was out. I think he did too the way he looked at it in his glove.i remember the great catch he made in 1972 in tiger stadium he fell down but still caught the ball the Sox were in a dogfight with the tigers for the division. That curse again. I think he fell on a football hole the lions had played there on the Sunday before. Dwight also had a personal things off field issues with his son Tim battling an illness I felt for him so much so I went to the N F FOUNDATION IN BURLINGTON MASS. I OFFERED MY SELF FOR A EXPERIMENTAL GENE TREATMENT FOR N F. they thought about it but never got back to me. ??.I wanted to help those with n.f. maybe someday. Dwight loved your great career in boston. H O F FOR SURE. in 1986 I thought we had it.

I was never a Red Sox fan, but for some reason Dwight Evans was always one of my favorite players. He just had away about him that I was drawn to. There’s no question in my mind that he should be in hall of fame. Arguably the best right fielder ever and a great hitter. But those who watched him know he was great so to hell with hall of fame.

I was a "Bleacher Bum" at Fenway since I was a kid in the 50's, but my all time favorite was Dewey Evans! "20 or more Homer's 8 straight seasons"! "8 Golden Gloves" with a rocket for an arm 💪! 20 devoted seasons as a Red Sox RF. A devoted Husband, Father and teammate.❤ Dwight deserves to be in the HOF. I have so many great memories of games when Dewey just shined. 🏆75(🏆78)🏆86. ⚾🇺🇲💪✝️🙏

Growing up in Chicagoland was great for baseball fan. I was a cub fan but when the Royals, Red Sox, Nolan Ryan. You could see both leagues. I remember Freddy Patek hitting 3 Homer's at comiskey. Watched Dwight warmup. Never did that . I was 12 13 and he was able to field a ball down the line with him run past ball so he fielded it going toward 2nd. He could also do the clemente no look throw. I think he is the mosted underrated player of 70s. The guy finished his career with over 100 rbis in last 3 of 4 years. When i see a person say that Barry Bonds is one of top 2 3 players ever? He played Left Field. Look up his fathers stats in his first 5 years. Guy was a beast.

If you think about baseball in terms of the number of plays made, the vast majority of them involve fielding. Baseball is a fielding game, as much as anything else. It takes immense talent to be the best fielder in the league, at any position, and yet there are guys with 5, 6, 7, 8 gold gloves that are not in the Hall. Put aside for a moment that he was a league leader, year after year, in put outs, chances, and assists. How many triples were turned into doubles, doubles into singles, or runners held in place, because Evans fielded the ball?? Evans also turned and threw (with pinpoint accuracy) faster than anyone I've ever seen. How often do players today stop to look, or pause in someway, before throwing? Evans always knew where he was going to throw the ball before it was hit. If you were a hitter, and hit a ball to right field, it either had to be a homer or it was coming right back! So a career with 8 gold gloves ??? Nope...Sorry...you didnt win and MVP so screw you!

As a red sox guy, i have to say the bottom line is you need to be elected into the HOF to have your # retired in Boston, which is bull#@$%. The yankees honor their players much more.

It is an absolute TRAVESTY that Dewey isn't in the HOF. 8 Gold Gloves, cannon arm, best RF of his generation. 385 HRs, 2446 hits, almost 1400 RBIs, more HRs than any AL player in the 80s and more extra base hits than ANY player in the 80s.

I was amazed at his offensive numbers. 385 Hrs. 2500 hits. With his defensive play over his career being the top 3 r4 outfielders in 70s 80s should be him a slam dunk for hall. If Sammy Soso ever gets in and Evans isn't? I will never pay to see a major league game.

I agree 100% however its pretty murky now with Manny Ramirez wearing that #24 for 9 years and being arguably the best right handed hitter the Sox have had...Just sayin
