We were lucky enough to pick one of these up on clearance, as I've been looking for one to replace my ancient unit from the 90's.
It is nearly the same as the older unit, but works SO much better!!
If you are not familiar with these units, they are safe to use indoors and can be an excellent prep, or backup for those times when the power goes down and the main furnace won't fire.
We bought this at Lowes hardware, but only paid $49.99

Years ago we had electric baseboard heat, and a King wood stove in the cellar. Eletric was set at 50 degrees. Would come home from work and fire up 2 kerosene heaters to take the chill out, while building the wood fire in the cellar. Moved from that house but still have the old 23,500 btu toyostove heater for emergencies. We are getting older. Harder now to lift the heater. Chalk it up to the laws of diminishing returns. 🤨 Great video, as always, Erik. 73's. I'm off the key.

Great heater, perfect for adverse weather conditions, myself own a few, same unit. Myself have 55 gal drum of Kero, keep jug in truck always replenish drum. Have multiple gas stations (Speedway) in my area having K-1 Kero at pump. Key is 'foresight to prepare' for potential grid down senerio via kerosene heaters, and or other alternate means of heat & power. Currently hearing horror stories from elsewhere via those lacking foresight.

I wish I could find K1 around here in bulk that didn't have the dye in it. I have to buy the 5 gallon jugs and that gets expensive. The dye in the bulk clogs the wicks. I use it in my lanterns cause they're not as finicky but the heater is.

I’ve used one for a whole winter before as my one heat source in the house, this house was old and drafty so I didn’t worry about carbon monoxide poisoning. Just out of curiosity, what are you folks paying a gallon for kerosene?. I was a Walmart a while back and was wondering in the camping dept and noticed they were selling "Kerosene #1" for almost $9.00 a gal, not that Walmart is a place to purchase such a commodity but, about soiled my drawers. I asked an employee who appeared to be in his late 70's (probably retired, just picking up a couple of bucks) what's up with the outlandish price?, He simply stated, kerosene isn't a commonly used fuel, so refineries kick up the price to give reason to manufacture it. Made sense to me. I think you folks in the South call kerosene "Coal oil"?. Now doesn't that heater work on the "Catalytic" principal?, Once the wick burns off the excess fuel, it will glow red/orange, I think that's how those things work?.

I bought this model based on Riverside Homestead Life video. I could NOT get it to ever burn clean/blue flame to burn off most of the kerosene smell. I know there is always SOME smell with any kerosene heater. HOWEVER after "burning it in" as instructed in the manual for 6 hours outside, I brought it in the shop which is 800 sq. ft. When I tried to get the flame adjusted so as to burn as blue as possible it was not putting out hardly any heat. Turn the wick up and I got the heat BUT had a total yellow flame and the kerosene smell was horrible. and YES, I had new kerosene per the manual. I have now been on hold for almost 45 MINUTES to GHP Group "HELP LINE", who carries these things. I was NOT able to get a refund through AMAZON where I bought it. Amazon tosses you the bottomless pit of some other companies "Help Line". I am expecting some push back from GHP Group for wanting a refund as I CAN NOT return it to Amazon. We'll see what GHP Group support has to say, IF they ever answer their phone. So, not impressed with this heater or GHP Group AT ALL. Better options out there. Like a Mr. Buddy heater/cooker. Yes it is propane BUT the one I have puts out more heat and I flip the frame 90 degrees and I can cook on it!

A 23K BTU Dyna-Glo like this one is excellent in Richmond, VA. The electricity WILL go out sometime this winter in a tree-filled area... and it may be a few hours or may be 7 days. You cannot control the weather and no electricity means no home heater system, no phones, no refrigerator, no water heater. See? I have a week's worth of heat with propane logs and a K-1 kero heater for an emergency and some kero lamps for lights when the power is out (winter is a darker period!).

I'm trying to understand the runtime/cost to operate. I hear anything between 8 and 12 hours on a 1.9 gal tank. Nobody ever says whether it's on high or low or whatever. I plan to only heat 2 - 10x12 connected rooms (240 sqft). I'm assuming that I wouldn't want it running on high. Would running it on medium extend the runtime and cost effectiveness?
@wemcal
@wemcal Жыл бұрын
Great question... the cost depends on how long you run the heater.. most are about 10-12 hours on a full tank ... the high/low is not much of a difference on burn time being 1 hour difference... the cost is based on the price of kerosene you use... they to produce heat, 45 minutes running will have you nicely warm. I do have a video explaining the cost of running a 1.9 gallon heater

@earlseventyseven7960
@earlseventyseven7960 9 ай бұрын
I bought a new one last week and although I followed manual to a T, the unit was always either burning minimally and flaming out or the flames were uneven and huge causing me to shut it off a few times as it kept setting off smoke alarm depending on where I set the wick knob. I was fed up with mine thinking i got a lemon after spending the better part of the day fiddling with it and doing dry burn a couple times, etc.. Finally I saw a video on YT by the manufacturer showing how to disassemble the unit to change the wick. It was very easy to take apart with Phillips and pliers (under ten minutes). I took it apart, inspected wick, which was fine, cleaned soot and during re-assembly, I made sure the perforated steel collar that sits on the groove around the wick was on correctly. (It was ajar before and not aligned on groove, and this was what caused all the issues) . After firing it back up it ran perfect! I think that flame collar can get jostled in shipping so if you 're having such issues, as I mentioned , check that collar alignment.
