I totally agree. Favourite on Long Road Out of Eden along with Centre of the Universe. Whenever I hear it, it just takes my mind to another place. Henley is sublime as usual!. For the non eagles purists - I think it might be a little to long for some people - they just run out of patience for songs this long. But oddly enough I adore The Last Resort because again it takes you to another time and place.

There is something so sad and melancholy about this song. Loss of opportunity, trapped by your own apathy, knowing that this is happening to you and yet embracing that loss of love and the inability to improve your happiness.. Life and love goes on without you and you simply watch it go by with both a longing for it and a 'good riddance' attitude towards it. There is just so much going on in this song. It touches my innermost emotions

It's coming on the end of August Another summer's promise almost gone And though I heard some wise man say That every dog will have his day He never mentioned that these dog days get so long I don't know when I realized the dream was over Well, there was no particular hour, no given day You know it didn't go down in flame There was no final scene, no frozen frame I just watched it slowly fade away I've been waiting in the weeds Waiting for my time to come around again and Hope is floating on the breeze Carrying my soul high up above the ground and I've been keeping to myself Knowing that the seasons are slowly changing Even though you're with somebody else He'll never love you like I do I've been biding time with the crows and sparrows While peacocks prance and strut upon the stage If finding love is just a dance Proximity and chance You will excuse me if I skip the masquerade And I've been waiting in the weeds Waiting for the dust to settle down along the Back roads running through the fields Lying on the outskirts of this lonesome town And I imagine sunlight in your hair You're at the county fair You're holding hands and laughing And now the ferris wheel has stopped You're swinging on the top Suspended there with him And he's the darling of The chic The flavor of the week is melting Down your pretty summer dress Baby, what a mess you're making I've been stumbling through some dark places Now I'm following the plow I know I've fallen out of your good graces It's alright now I've been waiting in the weeds Waiting for the summer rain to fall upon the Wild birds scattering the seeds Answering the calling of the tide's eternal tune The phases of the moon The chambers of the heart The ebb and dart of small gray Spiders spinning in the dark In spite of all the times the web is torn apart And I've been waiting in the weeds Waiting for the time to come around again and Hope is floating on the breeze Carrying my soul high up above the ground and I've been keeping to myself Knowing that the seasons are slowly changing Even though you're with somebody else He'll never love you like I do

They are all exceptional but Don being an English major and a genuine love of words, really shows in everything they do. I remember when Felder came up with the HC track he said he went to the studio and after playing it Henley almost immediately "visualized a theme" & wrote on a post stick note "On a Dark desert highway"..He the ability to let the music guide him to the lyrics and he also has a great passion of "looking back" in so many of his songs...I think that's what make them so relatable...Along with his perfect voice

Music is and has been my God for my 49 years. I listen to and read the words of songs from the 60s 70s 80s and can't help but notice most song truly only have a hand full of words, that are of course repeated. Don Henley and the Eagles are ahead of their time with the layout and writings of their songs. Just look at this masterpiece, you are drawn into the whole story like a small child being read a bed time book by your Dad, as many of their in their own league songs , taking you on your personal journey. Hotel California End of the innocence Many many more. Much more than Just songs

This song just wakens up so many emotions in me. It appeals to my sad melancholy so much. The music, the words, the melody. It just all comes together to paint a sad tableau of lost love and lost opportunities and saying 'to hell with it all, I'm choose to be lonely'. It creates so many images in my mind. I think of some of the girls I let get away in my younger days and think of the happy lives they are living now. Me, I'm divorced and alone and you always can't help but think about how things might have been.

Sometimes the inner expression finds a way to get flown away on a journey that introduces oneself to the personal story and deep meaning of life. For me, this song is a beautiful and gracious depiction of humble acceptance of a situation in life, and yet yearning for it to favor us in the clamour of life. The tune of this song stayed with me. My mind and heart restricted it's world to just this song. This is the music that is closer to the life and has a magnetic field of sorts in it which hooks us beautifully.
