Sadly Randy Meisner died today 28/7/2023 but this song and his singing of it, never will. Two very strong and deep memories, the first is the loss of my first love of a girl who broke my heart who play it so much and secondly 15 years later my two sons aged 6 and 4 sat in the back of my car, asking me to play it again, so as a family we could sing along to it. If it comes on the radio when I am driving, I swear I can see my youngest son Tom, smiling, laughing and singing along loudly to it, in my rear mirror and it always brings tears to my eyes.

The Eagles biggest mistake was sacking Randy Meisner. I love all the bands vocals individually and as a group but Randy was sensational. just my opinion.
@ingfig1
@ingfig1 2 жыл бұрын
They did NOT sack him. He quit when he stopped enjoying what he was doing, precipitated by the altercation with Glenn Frey - the last straw for a sweet and humble man after a prolonged period of bullying by Frey. Randy went on to have fun singing and playing bass with his own band, with other bands, and with other great musicians. For Randy it wasn’t about fame and fortune - but about a bunch of guys having fun making great music, whether for a small group of people or for a crowded venue - “There’s nothing better” is what he said in an interview on John Beaudin’s YT channel (Rock History Music).

This is Randy’s song. This song made the Eagles. Nobody since has come close to singing it better than Randy. The Eagles have tried with various artists over the years to do the song justice, and all have failed miserably. I don’t know why they even bother.

I’ve watched this video numerous times and never tire of it! The Eagles were a phenomenal band. And Randy Meisner’s voice was amazing… and when he hits that high note and holds it at the end, well that just made history! What an amazing moment it must’ve been for him. RIP Randy, your fans will always remember you fondly. He was such a cutie to boot! ❤️😘😍🥰

Nobody can touch Randy’s rendition of this song, which is his own composition that he was writing in his own creative process and in his own creative time .. until it was hijacked by Frey and Henley with their “let us help you finish it” trick that they used on a few other musicians to get their names on the credits and on the royalties checks.

"I don't want to sing this song today because my voice isn't right," Randy said before the day's stage began. But Glenn wouldn't allow it. "Randy sing it. There are people waiting for you to sing this song." And this song was played. The result is a resounding success. Randy's high tone voice is the best. As he played the piano, Glenn looked at Randy and smiled.

Frey, admired him hitting the top C note and Randy hated singing so in effect he was bullied into singing it, perhaps the reason he quit.
@ingfig1
@ingfig1 Жыл бұрын
@@stevebagnall1553 .. “Randy hated singing” … not so! Randy became reluctant to sing TITTL, but Randy LOVED singing and said that he would have liked to sing lead on MORE songs not FEWER songs (interview with Randy in John Beaudin’s Rock History Music YT channel) - but the Egoes Frey and Henley (as the self-appointed “bosses”) ensured that they promoted themselves by appearing to be in the lead. This is the background to Randy becoming reluctant to sing Take It To The Limit: Randy had a premonition at the time that he wrote it , that if the song became a hit, he would have to sing it and reach those high notes at each live performance .. and yes it became a hit and he had to sing it at every live performance ... this was the song that the crowds demanded to see him sing, showing that Randy was the real drawcard for the fans.. Well .. OK so he could hit those notes (and even higher if he wanted to, said Joe Walsh in an interview), for sure, but with a live performance there is no do-over like in a studio - and if he didn’t hit those notes in a live performance, Randy felt he would have disappointed the audience and embarrassed himself. So although he loved to sing lead, he developed a dread of singing that particular song., especially singing it almost every night without a rest for his voice to recover from those prolonged high notes (which many women struggle to reach), on the 11-month grueling Hotel California tour. In the 1977 concert in Washington, you can see that when Randy sang TITTL he used muscles in his core, throat and face to sing each word with passion - now imagine singing like that when you have stomach ulcers and flu.

Frey expected all members of the band to perform. That meant doing their part with a song that the fans loved. Randy had many problems in that era and it all came to a head. Frey was super dedicated because he realized that them having a band was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I think, I’m a band dynamic, the guys that bring the songs to completion feel like they have more work to do. On the other side of this, the members who are adding their parts can feel like they are being stifled. To say that one side is right the other wrong is easy from the sidelines but harder when you’re in it. Add to this success/money/fame/drugs/ego and it’s soon a road to break up. Which is a real shame. I think every one in the Eagles could look back and see a bunch of things they could have done different
@ingfig1
@ingfig1 Жыл бұрын
@@mikejohnson2638 .. and vice-versa. The two veteran co-founders of Eagles in 1971 were Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon, whereas Frey and Henley were the relative rookies. It was Randy’s and Bernie’s excellent instrumentation and distinctive high harmonies that gave Eagles their characteristic sound and the wings to soar above all the other wanna-be country rock bands in an overcrowded arena. Whilst Henley and Frey later developed into great musicians, in the early days they were NOT the talent behind Eagles. In early concerts we see Henley mechanically smashing those drums without sensitivity to the song. And Frey high as a kite, giggling at his own jokes, lurching all over the stage, even walking away from the mic mid-song, leaving Randy to nimbly step in and finish singing. Randy came into the band at age 24 with NINE years of experience singing lead and playing bass, having had his first single release at age 16 (‘Kansas City’ with the Driving Dynamics), in the style of the early 60s. Catch that unmistakeable passionate and more mature voice lead in ‘You’re So Fine’ just two years later. He also gave Eagles their FIRST million-seller hit Take It To The Limit even though it was never promoted as a single. Randy was writing it in his own creative process and in his own time when Frey and Henley pulled their notorious “let us help you finish it” so they could get their names on the credits and the royalty checks. And Bernie Leadon came into Eagles with experience in many country-rock-fusion pioneer bands such as The Flying Burrito Brothers and Dillard & Clark. Bernie gave Eagles their 3rd hit which was also Eagles FIRST all-Eagles written song. He wrote all the iconic music for that song whilst Henley wrote the lyrics. Bernie’s distinctive bluegrass style was the identity behind the catchy guitar leads and rhythm on the first four Eagles albums. Bernie also introduced his old school friend to the band in 1974. Don Felder brought Eagles into the rock orbit - which Frey could not have done, as stated by Frey in an interview. Frey could play a reasonable lead, but hey let’s face it … Felder is on another level. And Hotel California was Felder’s creation too, with Frey and Henley once again pulling their “let us help you finish it” stunt.

Also they lost Bernie Leadon, who was one of the four co-founders in 1971 along with Randy Meisner, Glenn Frey and Don Henley - later joined in 1974 by Bernie’s old school chum Don Felder. Bernie’s excellent instrumentation and strong bluegrass influence gave Eagles their characteristic sound which enabled them to soar above all the other wanna-be country-rock bands in an overcrowded arena. It was Bernie’s lead and memorable guitar licks on their first four albums. Also, Bernie wrote some great songs : he wrote all the iconic music for Witchy Woman, which was Eagles’ 3rd hit but their FIRST hit written only by Eagles members (with Don Henley having written the lyrics). Other memorable Bernie compositions: Bitter Creek and Early Bird (co-written with Randy, contains a great banjo-guitar duel between Bernie and Glenn Frey on slide guitar).

RIP Randy; this is YOUR song. Saw Eagles in 2003 at The Palace of Auburn Hills (old home of Detroit Pistons), and Frey sang this, and it just didn't sound right. In fact the concert, whilst OK, seemed "fake" without Randy and Don Felder. This is no disrespect to Timothy B. Schmit who is a fabulous singer in his own right, but even he would never "steal" this gem from Randy.

This song is no doubt, the best one out of the Eagles songbook. Up there with Hotel California. And Randy Meisner has the voice, it took Suzy Bogguss to even come close. The outro vocals are superb. I am so blessed to have spent my prime in a time when music such as this was on the stage. No more, but the technology has preserved the sum total. That too I give my thanks.

The eagles first 2 albums were the best with the original line up.

@@rce59 .. I agree. Although, the next two albums were great too (that included co-founder Bernie Leadon before he left in 1975) - Bernie gave Eagles their characteristic sound with his penchant for bluegrass. Check out Bernie’s banjo playing on “Early Bird” which was co-written by Bernie and Randy - especially the part where Bernie banjo duels with Frey’s slide guitar and Frey just couldn’t keep up (nice try tho). Noteworthy: after Eagles lost both Bernie and Randy, not much new material was released, and Eagles basically became a bunch of guys doing covers of the hits from when Bernie and Randy were in the band. Also, after Randy left, the band broke up only two years later, and stayed broken up for 14 years!
