Phosphophyllite (フォスフォフィライト, Fosufofiraito) is the first chapter of Haruko Ichikawa's manga Land of the Lustrous. It introduces the setting and characters of the story, as well as explaining some background information.
In this video I will analyze it and theorize over the entire series.

I can tell you really love the manga. So many details! I really liked your comments on the paneling and notes on the first time we see eyes and things like that. I'm a huge fan of deep analysis so its great to learn new things for something I've mulled over so much myself. Also, I'm so saddened that Cinnabar gets cut out every time : ( spoilers* On the 28 gems my best guess is that the last one is Heliodor since they were taken most recently. It could also be Sensei's brother, but I think that's a big stretch that Sensei wouldn't let slip, also doubtful that Sensei would include him. To support your point at 25:42 on the last page of chapter 82 Aechmea says to handle Phos' memories of the past 200 years with care. Phos wouldn't have memories for most of those 200 years if they were unconscious the whole time. Absolutely horrible to think about, but there are grounds for it. Crazy to see it set up in chapter 1. At 33:01 This connection with Phos taking responsibility for saving Morg and Goshen mirroring Phos taking responsibility for their departure is terrible! Its so unfair to Phos, but the connection is there. Honestly, I hope Phos forgot that they said that, but I wouldn't be surprised if it haunted them. One thing I'd like to add is my interpretation of Phos and Sensei's relationship. I think that part of why Sensei treats Phos differently and potentially cares for them differently is because Phos doesn't treat Sensei as an absolute authority like the others do. While the other gems see this as disrespectful I think that Sensei secretly relishes in it. We learn later that Sensei doesn't want to be the teacher or in charge, but its just the role he ended up in. With Phos he isn't some divine figure that must always be followed and respected, he is just a person. A person who is incredibly important and Phos loves, but not the same as the others. I think this connection between them deepens throughout the story as this relationship remains different from what Sensei has with the other gems. As Phos unravels Sensei's secrets Sensei isn't angry. I believe Sensei wants Phos to figure things out because with Phos he doesn't have to hide so much because Phos figures things out that the others turn away from. As the story continues the relationship between Sensei and Phos changes as Phos is able to command Sensei. However I believe, even then, Sensei's feelings are genuine.

That's a very good observation, and it makes sense. I also love how all the way at the beginning we see Phos' defiance. We just never imagined at the beginning it would get as bad as it does.

Im not the best at analysis but what i noticed was that in the beginning when the clipboard covers phoses eyes, the same happenes later on with sensei as the paper covers his eyes too. While this is a minor detail and might even be a coincidence i dont expect it to have a really deep meaning, i see this as a sort of connection between phos and kongo with them both having to carry the role of the divine at some point of the story (well atleast thats how i see it) i also think that while the other gems eyes are covered with their hair, phos and kongos are covered with sheets of paper can also mean something they share. But while phoses connection to the clipboard and etc is ofc linked to (not only having the role of writing an encyclopedia) but also the fact that they are opposite of an encyclopedia, but kongo on the other hand, i cant really seem to tie him with the encyclopedia/clipboard/paper thingy

Yeah that is really cool foreshadowing! Thank you for noticing. Another thing to add to that is it only covers the eye that Kongo gives later for both Phos and Kongo. When Euclase takes the leadership role, they are covered by a sheet as well, but it is their whole body then you see their face. I think to connect Euc to it as well but a different role. Ayumu's lunarian copy also came down on a sheet

I love this series and I love your way of breaking down the chapters. It feels like I'm having a friend gushing to me about something they love. It makes me want to do it for a series I enjoy.

i make the exact same sound you made at 13:02 like three times per chapter when i'm rereading and pick up on those little details/connections that just hurt my heart hahaha. such a fun yet painful manga to overanalyze

Cinnabar is actually in the folding part of the cover, American version of manga actually don't have this part thats why he was cut out. My country and the original Japanese version both have it.

6 is for the specific materials that have a special significance to buddism, and 7, ( 6 impacts, 7 moons with the original one) have a special meaning in many a religion.

Yes, 6 usually represents more negative aspects (like 666), while 7 usually represents a form of holiness or completeness.

In the page that phos is looking at themselves in the water, the panel below shows 7 lily pads(?), while not a direct reference, i think it stills pays homage to the Buddhism idea of the budda taking 7 steps north and with each step a lotus springs from them, which indicates ascension and reincarnation, so yeah, neat detail i guess Edit: i thought that i had, since in this moment phos is walking the opossite direction of the flowers, is like they are rejecting the idea of change, compiling to the idea that they are happy at this moment, like mentioned in the video. Which makes another parallel since going south, is like confirming or accepting your situation. So yeah, yapping.
