I always appreciate that Ba Sing Se is still up to it's old shenanigans. The earth king in the Original Series clearly wasn't equipped to root out all this corruption and inequality - that's a job bigger than one lifetime even if he had received proper education on how to be a ruler. Even with help and good intentions its just completely realistic that many of the Cities core problems would remain under the surface.

Rulers benefit massively from corruption and inequality -- they exist because of inequality. They will never want to actually root these things out -- rulers don't have such "good intentions"

Yu know it’s weird not even the avatar ever points out since they are in charge of both the earth balance and the sprit world they technically have more authority then any of the nation leaders, next avatars need to be more floating with their roles. I've always felt it was a missed opportunity that the show didn't make Mako and Bolin's grandma the same girl Zuko went on a date with in Avatar. I mean, they look similar, and their names are almost identical (Jin‐Yin), so why not?

It's a red flag for many multiple good reasons. A pretty good generalization in fact. Not 100% accurate but statistically significant. It's no coincidence at all that many times, hateful people are those who also esuba animals and they also feel no compassion or empathy for "just animals" which oftentimes extends to other humans. It is no coincidence that many cereal Ks start off on animals.

@ No, you completely missed the point and argued against some made up straw man. Premise was CLEARLY that people who don't like animals should raise a red flag, for many multiple good reasons, among them is the higher likelihood of them having little empathy, affection, or compassion toward other living beings... and taken to the extreme, that means they have a low tolerance threshold to eventually exacting violence on said living beings. And history and societal observation has shown this to be a very statistically significant correlation. Very often, people who are horrible to animals are also horrible to humans... likely because they equate these people and animals they treat horribly to be beneath them, not "on their level." Dehumanize them or not think of them as living beings, so they feel no remorse or guilt in hurting them. Maybe when you live long enough, you will open your eyes and ears to this reality. They call it a red FLAG for a reason, not a dealbreaker. It means alarm bells should be ringing, but it could still be explained away reasonably.
