I got to Richard Spaven play at a local bar the night before this post. First, huge respect to Richard for continuing to support local live jazz a week after headlining Glastonbury. Second, it was mind bendingly great - huge grins all round as he warps the time. I still don’t get it - is it subdividing the bar (measure) into 3,4,5,6,7 etc and each of those beats into sextuplets ? Live we have the bass player keeping the standard groove (props) so as a listener I know where the ‘proper’ beat is and makes it fun rather than just getting lost and confused.

Longtime subscriber, but I’ve only recently been able to see your videos in my feed. So crazy to hear you with such dry hi-hats. Congrats on the endorsement(?).

The "middle ground" with the sextuplets in the left hand while the leading hand is not morphing into anything clears this up nicely. Great stuff, looking forward to shedding the transcription!

I’d barely call myself intermediate so a lot of this went way over my head but I still loved it, such good playing. I’d love a video diving deeper into this if that’s at all possible!

yo nate, great content, but could you please get into the habit of counting off your examples? especially with concepts like these it’s not always easy to hear the pulse right away

I’ve heard Dennis Chambers do the same thing countless times. The only difference is that he doesn’t have the choppy Chris Dave angular feel.

Why does everyone want to sound like anyone but themselves? (Seems like it these days) nothing wrong with incorporating elements in.. .personally, I want to sound like me, my own voice, my own way. To each his/her own-

Ok, now can you explain it in the simplest terms possible? I mean it`s ok to show off once in a while but if i`m offering you my time and my attention maybe provide some notation, some slowing down, you know, so everyone can understand something.

this is a valid critique. Sometimes it's hard to know how deep to go so it's useful to everybody without being boring. I do have the transcription available for free download. Drumeo frequently don't go into too much detail in their "genuis of" series, but I guess that's kind of an ad for their membership, where they have the transcriptions and detailed breakdowns. Ultimately I kinda decided for this one that if somebody needed it spelled out note-for-note it was probably a little too advanced to learn verbatim and maybe they could just enjoy the concept. But I'll fully admit maybe I missed the target

@@8020drummer personally I think different people need different lessons at different times in their drumming journey. Since this idea is meant to facilitate your own creativity I can see why you didn’t spend a ton of time breaking down specifically what YOU played.

@@chasependleton1161 maybe think before you speak. And then, what is the purpose of showing online lessons? If it`s for your personal diary then keep them in a diary. If you do lessons online, do them properly.

@8020drummer
@8020drummer Жыл бұрын
Don’t judge it by me. Listen to that whole spanky clip. Also, I reject out of hand the idea that 100% of things on the drums have to be danceable. Can you dance to an Eric Harland solo? Or to Marcus Gilmore on an Gilda hekselman tune. But I’ll meet you that dance should be in the dna.

Sorry, but I think this shit will be too complicated to comprehend for a lot of people without explaining it by starting from really basic things and gradually adding to this. And those quick count offs? Come on man... Looks like some kind of show off, I am highly doubtful that everyone will be able to understand what is even going on with such a quick and not obvious count offs ... And to anticipate future comments - I don't think that not being on the musical level of understanding required in this lesson is the problem here.
@8020drummer

I have to think through this. It Definitely wasn’t my intention to show off, especially since I don’t think I have this stuff particularly well worked out, especially compared to the guys who inspired it. The idea was kind of a “high level” lesson - not meaning advanced, meaning it provides an overview without getting bogged down in specifics. Like the NPR stuff on dilla. It’s clear at least some people think I failed. I don’t assume I’m entitled to anything, but what I’d ask from my audience in my imaginary, utopian, ideal world is the space to experiment with different formats without people assuming bad intent ;)

@@8020drummer I said that it looks like showing off, not that I think that you are showing off on purpose. But after reading my previous comment I can see that it could sound a little bit harsh, sorry for that. But still, things that I mentioned are something to think about for the future videos and I hope you will take it as a constructive criticism despite the original comment sounding a little harsh
