Excellent. Thanks for taking it slow with the ride patterns. I’m really looking forward to trying them. And thanks for the thought about 3-beat phrases. It’s something I’ve done to make things more musical, but now I can consciously think about.

Good timing, I’m working on this very concept right now, needed this! I’m inspired too by you pointing out how cool Omar’s hi-hat is on “I Burn For You” by Sting As you elucidate, it’s pretty much just uptempo ride playing on the hats, it sounds incredible!!!!!

I agree with several of the comments Nate, one of your best here. This is something I have struggled with pretty much since I can remember. And comping at warp speed is such a talent. I do think many people initially aren't clear on the fact that you don't have to play spang-a-lang all the time, it's like an illusion lol Quarters with some light comping and interplay between snare and kick (keeping hats on 2 and 4 mostly) fill in the holes nicely. Well done sir! 👍😗

I don't know how you always manage to put out videos on the exact subject right as I'm looking for an easy way to dive into it. Great stuff as always, thanks man!

I love the premise and intro. This video is such a good break down of the conversation between instructor and student when the student is coming asking for help but the methodology is as important as the exercises. It’s something you always do well and this might be the best example of it so far. I appreciated the mix of musicality and physicality required to accomplish this goal and that you highlighted approaches for both.

When I used to march snare for my school marching band, my drum tech would preach almost everyday about learning drum technique from other sources and not just him. He was teaching me how to play 3s (basically just the spangalang but notated with a different context) and spent an entire week teaching the moeller stroke to the rest of battery along with different exercises. I learned jazz drumming from that pathway and with the notion that I could probably incorporate that knowledge onto the set and it worked pretty decently. I think relearning basic technique through different understandings of hand mechanics like dropping the wrist as you said and then adding other pieces of knowledge from what you've learned prior is really interesting to me.

yea that's a great idea to throw in there. I would only caution people not to do it *every* time, because sometimes you may want to be more subtle and keep it on the ride cymbal ;) Use your ears and musical instincts.
