I am what technical but when I watched this video just to set it up I think this is so complicated just to set it up! I wish good luck to people around the world that are willing to play with this. It just shows the many technical stuff you can do with a simple Raspberry Pi 3+.

Downside is that you need a proxy server, or cloud. Cuzz without port forwarding on 5G, not one ham can call you. Also Hamvoip needs to make a image with Raspbian OS.

I'll have to check one of the meshtastic antennas that I got to see if it will work well at the frequency I end up setting mine adapter with. I'm a bit curious as to why the team doing the dev didn't integrate a USB Hub in the box so that the device would only need a single interface on the Pi. It's not critical, but with the spacing they have set up, it obstructs the Ethernet interface on Pi4 and 5 systems. Yes you can connect those via wifi, but since both offer PoE options, that's broken unless you use a pair of extension cables. Though there are lots of hubs on the market that one might be able to use as well, just think it would have been nice if it was integrated into the device.

I'd be very tempted to dissect the provided antenna to find out what's going on in there.

The antenna shown in the thumbnail is just for the thumbnail. Not entirely sure if its even resonant on uhf. However, I think you can get little, angled antennas like this for UHF and VHF from places like ebay or amazon. Cheers

While the technology that one connects together, a bit like hot rodding a car in the 60's, is cool beans. I can't say here in the States repeater use whether direct or via IP appeals to me due to some pretty horrible behavior on repeaters. Maybe you Brits are more civilized, hope so none the less & enjoy.

working on establishing a GMRS repeater up near a rural bike trail, lake and wildlife preserve. Are you configuring these repeaters with allstars controllers, simply providing an out of band control option for these repeaters, or simply using one of these devices with the repeaters to provide a linking option to other GMRS repeaters in the network? I'm OK with any of these options but somewhat interested in setting up a hamvoip node, either standalone or networked, to act as a controller. Among other things I understand that one of the options is to establish a PL or CTCSS tone as an 'emergency' tone that if received allows someone monitoring for that to filter out the traffic that's not emergency traffic.

@@RNMSC I use hamvoip running on a Pi 3B+. Its connected to the Octane network. Hamvoip is also a used to connect to Allstar. I should have said nodes. My repeater uses the same hamvoip software but uses a RIM lite. The nodes use the Radio/soundcard in the video.

@@thomasdukes7698 I found ways of getting raspberry Pi's during the drought, Mostly by being prepared to buy whatever was available when I found one in store. So I have a collection, including a 3b+ or several (I also have some that I drove 3d printers with for years tsome of which can be repurposed) For a test setup, I have a repeater module that simply plugs into a couple of handheld radios, and a couple of type accepted radios that I can turn into a repeater with a duplexer that I'm waiting on. Antenna on a 20' poll already, and solar for power. Long term I do want to get a more professional and remotely managable setup. As I'm not living full time there, and this setup I won't leave unattended longer than it takes to go into town for a bit of shopping and promotion of the repeater..(If I head to the casino to see a movie, the repeater gets powered down. At least until I have someone else available who can locally monitor/maintain it. But having an astrisk node on a Pi there, and one of these devices set up to connect when I'm local, seems like a reasonable long term plan. Not ideal, but better than nothing, I think. That said, yeah, I'm going to need to work out the interfaces, which will probably have to wait till I find some type accepted for part 95e radios that will do more than 5 watts. That's research work. :-)

Hey, go for it! Who knows, maybe there's someone listening who will rag chew with you. Or maybe not, and all you've verified is that the repeater you can reach still has a functioning controller. Or does it? I've worked with repeaters that have wire-wrapped control interfaces (with far more features than you'll find on many of the "modern" repeater controllers) through repeaters using Allstars nodes as their repeater controller. I'm kind of in favor of losing the elletist analog only folk from the repeater if that means I have the opportunity to interact with millions of other amateur operators with other interests, some of which I may share. I'm not saying that allstars is perfect. I'm in general agreement with operators who will argue that if you're primary communications method is using the Internet, then your backup communications option shouldn't be using the Internet. Or if not the Internet, whatever you're primary option is, say cellular networking. But if you're arguing that it shouldn't even be an option, I'd argue that neither should you have a phone patch on your repeater, and those have been around since long before the start of the Internet. The fact that an allstars user can link up their HT to a repeater that's not in range, doesn't make for bad amateur radio. Though there are others with other opinions on the subject. And I'm OK with that.

Their different SHARI nodes can be bought complete with RPI too. They have tested the knockoff versions and show a page with details of these sorry quality pirate versions.
