I'm going to follow this to build my Allstar Node, but using a different radio. Thanks for what seems to be the best video on this subject that I've come across.

Question. About the Allstar server. Where do you get a list of the severs in order to choose one? I have a Webserver will that work? I need a node number. The instructions are lacking.

Hi Mat thanks for a very helpful video , iv built a node constructed very much the same as yours can.. so am I understanding it right if I go into the settings and make the adjustments to set it up for EchoLink. Then when I’m out of range of the node I could connect to it using EchoLink on my phone and hear on my phone what ever the node is connected to ?

Nice. I’d like to build similar. Couple of questions; Would this work on the pi4 these days? What made you have to take the radio apart, can’t you operate PPF fully via the simple Kenwood interface? Did it make it easier or better, if so in what way? Thanks! Great and inspiring project and I’d like to build something like this sometime...
@louisb5484
@louisb5484 3 жыл бұрын
Since posting that comment I have read it will work on a pi4. The old interface was done via sound card basic gpio, hence the wiring, it should be possible to do via gpio and a small interface circuit, no radio mods needed.

@@TechMindsOfficial quick question - If my truck has an always on/always 4g network connected wifi hotspot would an allstar node allow people from anywhere to radio me on my UV-5R handheld assuming that I'm nearby my truck and assuming they've got the exact same kind of setup in their truck? Bonus question: is this an example of a prebuilt allstar node: www.radioddity.com/products/mmdvm-hotspot-wifi? Thanks again for the great video and response to my questions if you have time. Was just watching it again and like that intro you've got.

Great video, the more I see these videos that explain the systems 'in simple terms' ( there's one on echo link, it's at a Ham fest I think in the US and you can hear the audience snoring in parts, it's put over like Brain surgery ') but I know this does what it says on the tin! 👍 Great work buddy, and Peter G7RPG, cheers for this, M0DHA

This is awesome and have most of all this around the house and will love to build myself. However I don't have my Ham license yet. Do I need a license to use this or can I use it on PMR. Many thanks in advance.
@terrya450
@terrya450 4 жыл бұрын
depends on the frequency you set it up on it goes over the internet you can use MURS FRS/GMRS and 11 Meter CB without a license those are the only frequencies anyone uses anymore anyway (for the most part) the rest of the bands are full of the hiss of nothing... most people use programs like paltalk its more reliable with a smartphone then using a OTA device.

I have just gotten back in to ham radio, I used echolink years ago, and loved it. But I am just now learning about the other IRLP options. AllStar seems to be the same, but different. I do like the home-brewed node connection, that is very nice. What does one of those typically cost to build or buy, in 2020?
@TechMindsOfficial
@TechMindsOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
Pi 3 b+ £25, BF888 £8, SoundFob £2, a few components £5 + a good few hours building it and configuring the software. Alternatively contact G7RPG and he’ll build you one to your specs, professionally built and he ships world wide.

I’m new to HAM radio and hotspots/nodes. This might be a stupid question but why is this so complicated compared to a Pi-Star hotspot? Why can’t this be done with an mmdvm Raspberry Pi hat and remove the need for a usb sound card and taking apart a radio?
@TechMindsOfficial
@TechMindsOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
Technically you don’t need a radio, just a pi with a supported sound card. You can then create a “Radio-less Node”. The reason for this system to be how it is, is because to access the All-Star network you need to run the All star software, most commonly on a Pi. There are some talk groups and reflectors that tap into All Star, but they are only tapped into specific nodes/clusters, like Hubnet for example.

I like your videos and where you are going with Ham radio. Okay, if my feeble mind can understand this I could use a my Analog FM Baofeng UV5R to talk to this ALLSTAR node like you built. Now it looks as if the BF888 only has 16 channels? Can it be programmed to a certain channel? Looks like it is a very affordable radio.
@TechMindsOfficial
@TechMindsOfficial 5 жыл бұрын
Well the BF888 is only used as a radio part for the node. So only 1 channel is needed I use another handle to talk to my node. Imagine it’s a repeater, that is controlled via a raspberry pi. Via the sound card the pi uses the BF888 as a transceiver :) hope that makes sense.
@1crazynordlander
@1crazynordlander 5 жыл бұрын
@@TechMindsOfficial I pretty much had that figured out after the second time through the video.(I'm Slow) I was just amazed by all the money being spent on digital radios and with this you can use a $35 UV5R Baofeng to talk all the way across the world. I am already on this. I signed up with AllStar Link. I think I can build this myself I live out in the middle of nowhere! What is the wattage rating on the BF888 before it is fixed?
@TechMindsOfficial

I think it’s about 3 watts, way more than needed for a home style hotspot.

I wouldn’t purchase anything that I can make myself. Making the audio interface board between a radio and the pi is quite easy. Order a couple of cheap boards from China and if you mess the first one up it wouldn’t of cost much.
