The perfect video for me! I’ve felt low key guilty for (more than once, ahem) going from umbrella to an array of soft boxes, back to umbrellas, back to softboxes, and now… back to umbrellas). For travel/location shoots, umbrellas are just the best. The Flashpoint AD 200 is a genius bit of kit, the magmod grip is perfect… you’ve validated all of my choices!😀. I also greatly appreciate your personality and goofiness coming through in the videos

I’m so glad that I switched to one body - one lens and using daylight for everything ha ha. Back in the day when doing the paid jobs I would have loved such a kit . Back then I used the bounce flash to get the desired look and prayed that I got it right first time, as on film you don’t know if it has worked until the prints came back - awful I know ha ha. But practice made perfect lol. We are so spoiled these days with digital . I am also no longer young and can only manage to stand without falling over in a light breeze , so as helpful as the tips were, I shall give the ideas a miss . Omar , another fantastic video and thank you once again for some really useful ideas .

EXACT same set up here. I also use the Magshoe with the AD200 (sometimes I go even lighter with a Metz M400 for Fuji) and the reversible-collapsible Westcott umbrella as well (which is sort of a pain to put back in the bag with the black cover on but it just works and gets the job done). Completely agree with the reflector as your first modifier, and absolutely agree about umbrellas... and about everything.

I recently got a couple of Manfrotto Nanostands. As long as there is no wind, they’re fine with a shoot thru and a small flash. The Nanostand legs splay out pretty flat so you can easily weight them down if you need to. They’re a nice option to have when you can’t go lugging tons of gear around. I use them indoors too for light duty.

Hello. Brill vid, ta. On the basis of this vid, I have subscribed. Your experience, presentation , humour and ability to teach made this excellent. It proves one does not need amazing videos to explain many things (nor silly / awful stock clips). Your talking-head (with some illustrations) video was a perfect explanation of the subject. I am not even interested in shooting in an urban environment nor changing to Fuji (albeit an excellent brand) so, prima facie, there was nowt here for me but, actually, I learned much. Cheers, best wishes from the UK and thank you.

It's so funny the we photographers move away from the shoot thru to a softbox and get kinda smug about it, then lug around big softboxes outside where they offer almost no advantage to an umbrella. Such a good way to get soft light outside, even just as a small scrim to soften sunlight

Your content is so entertaining. Thanks for keeping it lighthearted! I'm curious on your take on the Godox Lux Master with their cheap light box attached. It should give you similar benefit to the speedlight setup you showed at the end of the video without all the moving parts. For an amateur, getting the Lux Master, their new tiny wireless trigger and 2 cheap modifiers (soft box and dome, each for $20) all for less than $400 seems like a great setup for people on a small budget.

I need one of those smaller flashpoint lights for shooting my dogs outdoors. I've been lugging the XPLOR 600 and those bulbs aren't cheap. I also choose the cheap umbrellas because the wind destroys them, then I get new one for $20, and they're so damn easy to transport while walking in the hills.

So funny, I was agonizing over the same "simple setup" heading overseas , but in the end I just decided on natural light due to my minimalist travel gear.. But I love the light-sphere added into the umbrella setup. Will definitely use that!

Nice video. I too have been using umbrellas recently; both shoot thru and black/reflector type. They are very easy. I own the Glow softbox as well, and they are NOT quick and easy. The Magmod grip seems like a good idea, but expensive. I use a cheap grip for speed-lite, but it doesn't include an umbrella hole, unless I add something to the top.
