Big question, Martin! The ideal would be something with 88 keys, touch-sensitivity and a sustain pedal (ideally a soft pedal, too). If you look for something that calls itself a "digital piano" rather than a "keyboard", you won't go far wrong. Not sure of your price range, but I the best value-for-money on the market is the Roland FP-30.

@@BillHilton very big question haha, I was looking at starting small maybe about £200 to 250 max, I just want something that I can get a feel for and see if it's for me if you know what I mean, cheers for the reply

For that sort of money you can pick up some playable pianos new (Casio and Donner and probs the brands to look at) and it might be worth having a look on eBay - a couple of hundred quid could get you a second hand Roland or Yamaha in decent nick. Let me know how you get on!
