A lot of people might laugh at this, but I give this woman props for stopping before any damage happened, and calling for help to get out of a situation that she was uncomfortable with. I suck at backing trailers, so I probably would have had the same problem. The value of having someone closer to the problem giving you directions should not be underestimated! I also have a hard time judging distances.

There’s no shame in asking for some help when you need it, and in this case it kept both the car and the trailer from being damaged, so that she was able to continue on her trip with no issues.

Absolutely. And awesome that you had her do the driving to gain some experience and, hopefully, some confidence. Still curious how she got it that tied up, but I can’t say too much - I can’t back a trailer up to save my life. Rebuild a motor? No problem. Race motorcycles on and off road? No problem. Back up a trailer? Forget about it.

There is definitely a learning curve involved with backing a trailer up. This was probably her first time ever with a trailer and I bet if she had an extra set of eyes to guide her she probably could have figured it out after a few extra minutes. definitely props to her for knowing her limits and asking for help.

Kudos to the lady for accepting her limitations. Many people (male and female) would rather break something than do that. She could have pushed a twenty on you, though. You absolutely DID do something she couldn't do, even if it was just verbal instructions.

Fair play for making her get into the car and talking her out of the situation!!! most people would automatically jump into the car and do it themselves.... her hesitation when you told her to jump in showed she wasn't overly excited at the prospect The fact you've talked an inexperienced driver out of the issue without making it a big deal at all will give her a ridiculous amount of confidence moving forward with towing, also credit to her for doing the right thing and knowing when to call for help when she realized she was stuck instead of trying to unhook it or something

Talking about unhooking, that was my first thought too, unhook and manhandle it out of the way, until I saw it was a larger 2-axle trailer, and I drive semi trucks for a living. 😅

@@pigletshut Had I been by myself I would have unhooked and repositioned the vehicle straight in line with the trailer. It was a lot easier having someone who could actually see to direct. Trying to do what he did without a spotter would have probably caused damage.

I need to remember to use driver and passenger instead of left and right. I'm a U-Haul dealer and have come across many people that can't even back the car up without a trailer. You did an excellent job!!

More than anything, I was impressed at how well the lady followed instructions! So many have a heavy throttle foot, or can't figure out when or how far to turn the steering wheel. She did as instructed, and got herself out of that predicament. Well done Casey and lady!

Well, would she be able to do it on her own if you put the car and trailer back at the same place? I doubt it. You can't really learn when you're just being told exactly what to do. You need trial and error to learn, which means she needs to see what's happening back there when she does this and that. And a lot of it, so you can't give up. But in this case, I think she was afraid of damaging stuff, and then you're not learning... just worrying. I mean, she couldn't see what was going on back there, right? So, I get it. In that situation, she did the right thing.

@@jsjs6751 ah yes, I don't learn how to put a table together when I follow the Ikea instructions because I'm just being told what to do and totally not doing it myself. Would she be able to do it as well? Probably not, but she could at least try next time. Will she be able to tell if she's about to hit? Maybe not, but she could ask for a rando's help to tell her when to stop instead of needing a specific person next time. She has more knowledge than she did before, her brain didn't completely deactivate just because she was instructed how to do it. Still a valuable lesson for her.

@reru_personal Oh, I think she tried - that's probably how she got into this mess. But sometimes you just need to get help. About the IKEA instructions: There's a distinct difference here. The car, trailer, and pole will probably not ever again be in the exact same spot/position. If it (always) would, she could easily memorize the movements (instructions like: turn all driver, 1 foot ahead, turn all passenger, 2 feet reverse aso.). I am pretty sure she would have made it if she had live drone video from above. Then, you get immediate feedback from your actions. And, not the least: she would actually have learned something about how a car and trailer interacts and would probably never have this problem again.

I'm used to trailers and it looked like a pickle. One of those I actually have to be there doing it to figure it out. Course I learned to tow trailers on a riding lawnmower with a small utility trailer intended for a 4-wheeler atv years before I got my license.

@@erikwilliam1254 Every trailer / tow vehicle combo behaves a little different. An adjustment at times. My boat trailer is easy, my car trailer is sorta easy, backs nice but it is short tongued, so I got to watch over correcting. I also learned on tractors and manure spreaders.

I have a little single axle trailer. It still takes me a while to get used to backing up and turning. Never been stuck or damaged it. I'm sure I have entertained people taking a few tries getting into tight spots.

As a tow truck operator, these are the highlights of the job. 1) the rare call where you never have to touch the vehicle. 2) the rare moment when you get to make someone's day by not charging them. 3) helping a customer to fix a simple issue without making them feel stupid for getting into a situation in the first place. Having all three of these factors in one call is kind of a unicorn, but it does occasionally happen. Towing can be a lot of fun, but it really depends on the nature of the service your company provides. If all you're doing is repairing flat tires for entitled customers who are unpleasable, the job can really suck. Picking up wrecks and cleaning up the messes from them all the time also gets boring and can be annoying. Working for a company doesn't generally pay very well. The overhead is ridiculous on keeping a fleet of trucks on the road. Expensive to operate, and even more expensive NOT to operate. After costs, depending on the nature of the calls (especially if they're through contract providers like AAA, Agero, Allstate, etc.) the company turns very little profit per call, so to make any profit you need to be constantly slammed with calls and hustling through them. The best money is always in direct calls, but then you don't get many without some advertising expense. It's tricky to make a good living in towing without burning out quickly.

My daughter used to work at a motel and a guest got herself into a similar predicament. She drove her U-Haul truck under the canopy after being warned not to. She got it wedged in the tight turn. The tow truck driver came and drove it out for her. You guys rock!

She just needed another set of eyes. As usual respect to you for not charging her and making the most of it by choosing where to buy breakfast instead of only having one choice. Most people would have said they still spent the fuel and wear and tear on the vehicle and your time plus a call out fee. Plus the old you are not paying for me but my knowledge and experience. Respect also to this lady. How many videos show driver of trailers and hgvs caught like this and just power through the obstacle. She stopped when she realised she needed help and left with very minimal damage to the trailer and non on her car or lamp post. And she followed instructions really well.One of my first effects towing a trailer I went 5ft into the driveway next to the one I should have. 15 minutes later I had managed to position my car 15ft back and was completely jack knifed around myself. Fortunately I was only just able to take the correct driveway from this position. I didn't have a Casey so did it myself but I didn't slightly damage my trailer and scratched my car. Sometimes the most important thing to know is you need help.

At first I was confused how someone could not get out of it but realised she's a young driver probably the first time she's ever towed before. The way I learned to back a trailer was when I was a kid. Backing a garden dump trailer behind our lawnmower, big trailer and truck/car was a piece of cake when the time came. Been towing a fifth wheel RV for only 6 yrs now and still have minor issues, a little different, but doable…not hit anything yet 😁

During college I worked at a supermarket, during my break I would go to the delivery docks and watch the trucks and trailers, I was watching one day when a regular driver came in but instead of the normal 40ft trailer he was towing a shorty, 20ish ft long, he would normally swing round and put the 40ft trailer straight on the dock, he went all over the yard with the short trailer, it took a good couple of minutes to get it on the dock! Short trailers are arseholes to reverse, I’ll take a trailer with a longer drawbar every time!

Backing up a trailer might be one of the most UNintuitive things on earth to the uninitiated. No matter what you do, the trailer always seems to do exactly the opposite of what you expect. The answer should be obvious : do the opposite of what you have been. Unfortunately getting our brains to accept that nonsensical answer isn't easy.

It's somehow like learning to ride a motorbike or even pedal bicycle. It's counter intuitive to steer into the opposite of where you want to turn first, so the two wheeler lean on a side first, and then steering into where you want to go.

here's a hint to make it easier. Hold the wheel at the bottom, the way you want the trailer to go is then the direction you move the wheel in. Try it, it makes things much easier.

Best part of all of it is not how easy a job it was but that she called Casey. Some other might have charged her for the advice. Gave us a nice video and got Casey out to get something to eat.

Its also very hard to menuver 4-5 inches, get out of the vehichle and check, then do it over and over again until you get it. Hopefully she will remember a little bit of what was taught just in case it were to happen again 😊 In a video game it would be a breeze but actually doing it is way different lol

And this is why in the UK you need to pass a small license test to drive with a trailer!! (involves reversing around some cones, and a supervised drive) it then gets added to your license so police can make sure you can drive.

Kudos to Casey. I was a little worried that the woman might be too nervous to drive, but Casey did a really good job of calmly and clearly giving instructions. And the woman did a great job of following the instructions with appropriately gentle use of the gas.

I think what might of spooked the lady was that the wheel had dropped off the curb onto the dirt, which probably looked to someone with little experience that it would damage the tire/trailer trying to pull sideways going forward, so she did the sensible thing and called for help

I like this ‘turn to driver side’ or ‘turn to passenger side’. Many people get confused with ‘left’ and ‘right’, especially under stress.
