Dude youre really good at connecting the points... im an intuitive learner myself (completely self taught) and have figured out most of this by myself by now.l, however thank you for pointing out that Dorian/lydian and phrygian/mixolydian are the same scales, much appreciated! The breakthrough in modes for me was when i finally figured out that if you take C major scale and simply start playing from D you get 2nd mode, from E - third mode and so on :)) guitar is such a trip :D

I just got serious about playing again(in 96' my best friend/guitarist died and I quit for 15yrs). Then dabbled, till about a year ago. I have been adapting a new idea to playing(close to this), any scale can be learned by learning the 7(or 5) notes, then moving the root. Remember to go down 1 fret on the "B" string. They all actually wrap back around. This also helps people to learn where every note is a lot quicker. I recently found your channel. I just started a 2nd channel(I do knife making as my main channel) just for my music(old, new & lessons). Great work, love this lesson... Take it easy.

Exceptionally good video, this is exactly the way i learned modes a while ago but i missed the intuitive part you mentioned here, where modes can be split in to the major/minor variants, this really opened my eyes more and now they seem much less intimidating. Another excellent exercise that helped me, maybe good idea for part 2 ;) is turning each of these modes into their corresponding chord progressions, so the feel of each mode is heard in rhythm and chord progressions... The diminished is always the fun one ;) Back in the day, I remember making a quick song for each mode to quickly illustrate the feel. Now i can sort of identify modes in popular music all the time. and have a good idea which genres adopts which modes.

Could you tell where did you learned it? I think it's interesting topic especially when i finally understood something about modes and scales after watching this video :D
@TheSabatuer
@TheSabatuer 6 жыл бұрын
I cant remeber from where, it was a long time ago, but its the same way you turn the major scale into chords, however the formula : [ Major-minor-minor-Major-Major-minor-Diminished ] keeps shifting with each mode. So since Dorian is the 2nd degree mode, the Chords would be [ m-m-M-M-m-Dm-M ] Therefore, for example A Dorian ==> Am, Bm, C, D, Em, F#Dim, G (play these chords after you run the scale, you will hear the exact same harmony) So Can you tell me what the chords for A Mixoledyian are?
@mefju26
@mefju26 6 жыл бұрын
TheSabatuer Thanks for answer! So my answers will look like this. If myxolydian is 5th degree mode so it goes [M-m-Dm-M-m-m-M] so i think chords are the same as for Dorian A, but in diffirent order (D,Em,F#Dim,G,Am,Bm,C)
@TheSabatuer
@TheSabatuer 6 жыл бұрын
Almost perfect, you got the chord families correct, but the A Mixo notes are not the same as the notes as A Dorian, remember in the video there were small changes, some notes added, some removed, those changes would change the chords as well. So A mixo is --> A, Bm, C#Dm, D, Em, F#m, G Try playing the scale then the chords in sequence and see if they match up. Then try making a progression with some of the chords start with A7 Best of luck and happy new year :D

0:50 (paraphrased) "How are you supposed to know the theory and which notes are offset in the scale" ===> With EYES! e.g. Eyes on even the cheapest keyboard makes everything MUCH clearer (even obvious) by comparing the C major scale to whatever other scale or mode is under discussion. "Wiping away" the subtleties and complexities of the (TWO dimensional) fret board and focusing on the ONE dimensional (LINEAR) keyboard helps clarify everything.

I know this technique of teaching the major minor but I never liked it because I actually found it more difficult. I actually think maybe in the beginning 3 frets was too big a jump ? My first teacher combined them all in charts . That way wasn’t easy either lol.

Thank you for this. You have no idea how badly I needed this. I just have one question. Is this applicable to the other four shapes of the pentatonic scale as well? I'm not fully done with the video yet, so apologies if you've already addressed this. I know I probably won't get a response back from the man himself but if anyone around here can help a fellow learner, I'd really appreciate it! Thank you!

I'm sure you figured this out by now but for anyone else yes as long as you know where your major and minor root notes are. All positions of the scales exactly contain the same notes with each one adding only one or two higher notes to the sound

I get it but it’s very fast & confusing. Would it not be easier to relate these to the chords, as you did in the finding minor/major chord video. So you relate the A shape to the root etc. The graphic’s very confusing showing all the intervals on one string rather than those that relate to what you're talking about?
