Living in an area of coastal North Carolina where we have the threat of hurricanes six months out of the year and other storms where we can lose power, I find an air stone and air pump with built in back-up lithium battery invaluable. If power goes out while we're not home or sleeping the tanks will continue to have enough surface movement to guarantee the water remains oxygenated. It's not just because I like bubbles.

I love hang on the back filters. It is funny because I have hobs on my tanks, and then I started watching videos where everyone was talking about how great sponge filters are, so I thought why not both? Now I have hobs and sponges. lol

I'm the same way both hob and sponge filters. I figure can't go wrong with too much filtration.

Yep, I’m the same way. Either HOB plus sponge filter, or else HOB plus UGF, depending on the tank.

I love HOB's but I despise sponge filters. They are hideous and all of the bubbles that disperse build up deposits on my lid.

100% on good heaters! I've set up a reef tank over the past few months, and one thing I've taken from that and am slowly implementing on my freshwater tanks is a controller and a second backup heater that kicks on at about 5 degrees below what you've set the main heater at. The controller will send out an alarm when the main heater fails and temperature drops, but the backup should prevent fish losses if you address the problem reasonably quickly. It will also keep you from cooking your fish. I've not searched for stats, but I'd bet after introducing disease and acclimation shocks, poor temperature control in an otherwise well-maintained tank kills more fish than anything.

I like a HOB filter AND a Sponge filter in my tanks. Some HOBS don't restart in a power failure. With a Battery charged Air Pump running your Sponge filter will keep the air moving water.

I think the best aquarium heater are Ebo Jaggers they seem to be just as good since eheim bought them out. And they are Oscar proof and most likely not have to buy another heater ever.

Team sponge filters! $ spent outperform all other biological/mechanical filters out. And all you need for a healthy tank. Easy on the pocket book. Use air pump or water pump. Put behind a rock and ya get your hand wet to clean it once in a while. If using HOB a prefilter sponge filter cheaply super charges for high bio or less cleaning of HOB. No fry etc getting in intakes. Suggest ATI sponges.

Not me beefing with the tidal surface skimmer, it’s really hard to keep with floating plants. Lovely filter otherwise but gosh do I wish you could turn the skimmers off. Also, and this has nothing to do with the video but: as a longtime fish keeper who is considering eventually getting a cat, I’d love to know how you keep the cats from causing mischief with the tanks. It’s one of the biggest reasons I’m hesitant about having a cat, I’m worried about them jumping on lids, stressing fish or unplugging important cords related to my tanks. How do y’all keep Carl out of trouble with the tanks?

thanks for another great video.. what if y'all set up some type of kit people can buy,. I have three planted tanks myself, addicted for sure. helps me feel better when im feeling a little down. call the "wellness world" or something. y'all can do a simple setup for people and take some of the work out of it for them, for a fee of course. just an idea. thanks for the videos.

I bought a pair of gouramis and the male started biting the female so i have to give the male back to the store and i want to put more fish with the female gourami so can u please make a video about thank mates for them

Seachem Tidal is a disaster of you happen to have Shrimp in your tank. The pump sucks them all in, no way to stop it. go with AquaClear if you have shrimp or you won’t have shrimp for long.

I have a HOB for my 20g & my fish get ancy if I don't keep an airstone going for them for at least 12h a day. (Probably not enough movement from the hob.) I also use that stone the other 12h to aerate my plant holding tub in anticipation for another project. ^^
