The most incredible use for the magic eraser is that it gets the white scum line that sometimes forms on the top of swimming pool walls. This line can’t be chiseled off with anything but it comes off effortlessly with the magic eraser.

I bought a Rowenta iron and I used distilled water. Turns out that I wasn't supposed to use distilled water in that iron. I voided the warranty when it stopped working. I didn't read the manual. Lesson learned! Every iron I've ever owned and used water in, I have had the brown crud spitting onto a project. I gave up! I now have a new iron. No water, ever! I now mist/spray. I also use a Magic eraser, but for stubborn "stuff", I use the Faultless Hot Iron Cleaner. It works great, just be sure you get it all off the bottom. I run it over an old damp washcloth and drop that into the washer for the next use.

I did the same thing, but luckily my Rowenta is still working. (Knock wood!!!) I found out I wasn’t supposed to use distilled water in it when it started spewing brown gook instead of steam and I got the manual out to read how to clean it. 🤦♀️ It took me quite a while to flush out all that gross build up with plain water--the manual said NOT to use vinegar in it. Ever since then I never put water in it again---I use a spray bottle with water which works for me. Even though I use pressing cloths, I always manage to get glue from interfacing on the sole plate, so I clean the bottom with basic Crest Cavity Prevention toothpaste. The toothpaste works like a charm on a warm iron and it doesn’t cost a lot.

Any stuff we use on our fabric (glue, starch, fusible interfacing) will caramelize on our iron. I agree with you that the Magic Eraser (cheapo me uses generic) is the best way to clean. Cleans the chrome body on vintage irons well too! To clean less, consider getting some Teflon coated fiberglass sheets. I use them to protect my wool mat, my ironing board and as pressing sheets. The are a marvel and conducting heat and being non-stick for any fusibles. They are unparalleled for quilters who work with high bias blocks who still want to press without distortion. They allow your iron to glide over the block without any tugs or pulls.

Just let the thing cool and use alcohol wipes. Cleans everything all the time. But of course the iron has to be cool first. Don’t be stupid.

It works well, but with your method, not only am I spared the cost of this product, but I also don’t need to worry about getting it in all those steam holes that. I don't. Something I want to know as well. Someone suggested placin a light fabric over the wool mat before pressing anything with iron-on glue or adhesive. Something I wish I would have done.
