Thank you, Sally :-) Speaking of that tip, there is one little thing to keep in mind - it won't be as easy to slip the yarn over together with the stitch if you hold the yarn in your right hand (the English way of knitting). In that case, it's better to make a yarn over first and then slip the next stitch purlwise. Happy brioche knitting! :-)

@@pedrod7153 Yes, the loose end of the yarn is held in the left hand, similar to crocheting. It is faster than the English way, I think. The yarn is not wrapped, it is just picked through the stitch. Look it up on YT videos.

That's an interesting idea. It could work, but only if you work preparation rows or rounds (slipping every other stitch) before you bind off stitches. These rows will make the edge less elastic, so that it could keep brioche fabric from stretching out too much. Good luck :-)

Thank you for the suggestion, Gina :-) I'll add it to my to-do list. Normally, it is easier to work two-colour brioche in the round than back-and-forth because there is no need to slide stitches on the needle to get to the "right" strand of yarn. Both strands "meet" at the beginning of the round and we simply pick the strand that is in a different colour than the colour used to work the previous round. The change of colours happens smoothly without any issues. If you are having issues with the change of colours, send me a message with more details about what's going wrong, and I'll do my best to help :-)

Hello Diane. Fisherman's rib is a variation of brioche stitch. Just like the classic brioche, It forms a gorgeous highly-textured fabric, but it have a different look. Happy knitting :-)

The edges look much better if you treat them the same as all the all the other stitches in all rows. That is: one row: slip with yarn over, next row knit with yarn over. Have you ever tried this?

Hi Samantha, Usually, it is recommended to make the heel part of a sock fairly dense to keep the heel from stretching and wearing off. Brioche stitch is loose and is not a very good option for heels. It works great for scarves, hats, cowls, cozy sweaters and cardigans - anything that you'd like to be fluffy and warm. Happy knitting :-)

Thank you, Monelle :-) As to the difference between the two stitch patterns, fisherman's rib is a variation of brioche stitch, we can probably call it "half-brioche" because one row is worked as brioche, and one row is worked almost like a ribbing. Sorry, I haven't considered different ways of making fisherman's rib. The way you are using is probably not the same as the one I usually use. If you are interested, I [make a yarn over + slip 1, knit 1] in row 1, and [purl 1, knit 2 together] in row 2. Work brackets to the end of the row. There are also several ways to work brioche stitch. The easiest one I know is explained in this video. The best way to know which stitch pattern works faster for you is to try both and decide for yourself :-)

It would be nice to use a tubular cast-on with matching tubular bind-off for a brioche scarf. Is it possible to do that and maintain your elegant selvedge edges too?

Of course, it is possible. You can use any type of cast on and bind off method you like, but because the texture of brioche stitch is so puffy, it needs sturdier cast on and bind off edges to keep it from stretching out. That's why I usually don't use tubular cast on for projects worked in brioche stitch. If you feel that your project will benefit from a stretchy cast on and bind off edges, try it on a swatch first. Hi Dorothy. It is better to join yarn at the sides of the project. If the yarn that you have left is not longer than at least three times the width of the fabric, then, most likely, you won't have enough yarn to work one more row. Unless the yarn is bulky or extremely expensive, it is better to attach a new ball of yarn before you start a new row. If you knit with bulky yarn, use the trick explained in this tutorial - www.10rowsaday.com/split-join - to make the place of join almost invisible even when you join the yarn in the middle of a row. Try to talk yourself through each stitch. We often make mistakes without realizing that we stray from the pattern instructions. It helps to repeat the pattern instructions to yourself as you work each stitch. Also, make sure you have an even number of stitches on the needles, and try to work with a yarn in a light colour to help you better see the stitches as you practice. If none of this helps, take a close-up photo of your swatch and email it to me. I'll try to understand what goes wrong. Happy knitting :-)

Linda, the only difference between the English and the Continental knitting styles is the way we hold yarn. Whenever I wrap the tip of the right needle using the yarn held in my left hand, you do exactly the same thing but with the yarn held in your right hand. Otherwise, these knitting styles are identical.
