My little brother just recently moved into his first flat and I helped him to search for the perfect plates EVERYWHERE. Couldn’t find what he was looking for. I joked about showing him how to make plates himself and now I’ll send this tutorial to him. Maybe I’ll even create a set for him for Christmas haha. Love how unique every piece is! 😊

Interesting use of the bag of rice. I thought you were going to make use of it’s properties as a desiccant. I have an old sock filled with sand but I may make another with rice. Nice work and thanks!

Excellent. I have some old plates I like that I could this with. Im going to try my home made clay with this technique too just for fun. I like the idea of slab ware.

Beautiful plates! I have a ? about the glazing process...what do you mix to create the glaze? How do you incorporate a color into it?

Can I ask how you get the glaze to look imperfect and lighter in some areas? Can I get this affect with brushable glazes? 😊

Peace Mia, at what point do you put the mark on the plate? When you do the first dry or when it is leather hard?

It was very helpful thank you! I am making my daughter a dinnerware set as a wedding present and I usually sculpt birds and figures. So its completely out of my comfort zone. I've been practising already and I'm putting feet onto my slab plates. Don't I need to do that?

What type & weight of canvas is best for wedging clay on? Can it be used & covering Hardie backer board? I haven’t got to the plaster board yet; hwr, I know I’ll need a way to slow & speed up the drying without being over saturated or drying to fast. I live in southeastern USA. We generally have mildish winters. The summers, not so much. We get high humidity & high heat temperatures here. My husband moved some things around, which has allowed for me to use half the barn space plus shelves. My pottery wheel (25+/-yr old Shimpo RK Whisper) is out of mothballs again! I’m hoping to find some way to build a table around it. We will need to get another wheel if he stays with it. He’s getting pretty good at centering clay, though I think the engineer in him would do extremely well slab building. 🤞🏼 Any assistance is welcomed. I’m currently wedging clay on a Hardie backer board edged with painters tape.

What type of clay are you using? For the original bisque then for production run? Is this stone ware or porcelain? Because of shrinkage twice.

1:54 I noticed that you had trouble with setting down the fabric wrapped plate so you can work with it (you just cut to the plate on the table). Maybe next time you can have a shallow bowl or wide cup ready that you can put the excess cloth knot into, while still having enough support to work on the piece.
