@@Kveiksmithdaryl Of course. It was a bit spur of the moment and may need work.. 200g white bread flour, 150g wholemeal bread flour, 100g rye flour, 8g salt, a splash of rapeseed oil and a small cup of beery liquor and floating yeast. Water added until a nice dough, proved then baked about 30 mins at 180 or so. It came out with a slightly bitter tang, so maybe less liquor next time or maybe some honey to balance. Not bad with cold meat and pickle though!!

The amazing yeast that you could probably chuck against your wall, scrape off a week later, pitch and still have it work! I'm a fan of the brulosophy overbuild starter method - though when using Kveik I know being as meticulous as other strains is overkill 😅

Thanks for the video. Do you need to add any additional yeast on top of the reused yeast when making a new brew? I'm only trying brew rough cider. Due to the high temperature in SE Asia, I can only use Kveik yeast due to it's high temperature range. TIA
@Kveiksmithdaryl Жыл бұрын
You don't need to add any addtional yeast, you'll have more than enough with the reused Kveik. In fact on a reuse it tends to work even better
@raymondryman2345 Жыл бұрын
@@Kveiksmithdaryl Thanks for the reply. How many times can you reuse the yeast (by only replacing the apple juice after fermentation and reusing the yeast left at the bottom of the jar)? From experience after the 4th time the cider tasted off (sour). I didn't want to chuck it and could drink as a shandy. I left it in the back of the cupboard for 4 months and to my surprise it tastes absolutely rosy apple delicious. Probably the best cider I've ever tasted. Patients is the key.

I'm going to be giving this a try, as i usually use wine yeast for my meads and wines, but i just bought a kveik yeast as im getting into brewing some beers and well....my fermenting temperature control isn't the best. This should make up for the price difference.

Please, I have a question: When you remove the bottom cropped yeast, do you mix it with some of the recently fermented beer or do you use a little water to mix it? Because it looks very liquid and easy to remove when you pour it into the jars.
@Kveiksmithdaryl Жыл бұрын
I let some of the left over beer and trub make it in to the jar, hence the liquid

@@Kveiksmithdaryl Thank you and congratulations for your very interesting channel.
@jonathang.50922 жыл бұрын
Great stuff! I believe there is a limit to how many times it can be reused though. The yeast can mutate if re-pitched too many times and not perform as expected. I'd probably reuse 4-5 times then get a new pack of fresh yeast and start again. You'd still be making a good saving!
@IanRushtonMusic2 жыл бұрын
I've reused voss countless times... Since Oct 2020 in fact. If anything I'd say it's a better yeast now than it was 2 years ago.
@jonathang.50922 жыл бұрын
@@IanRushtonMusic Well that just goes to prove don't believe everything you read!
@Kveiksmithdaryl2 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right about how it can mutate! Once it mutates its still usable yeast but its characteristics may have changed for the better or worse depending on luck/what you're brewing with it. You may end up with a completely unique Kveik in the end!
@IanRushtonMusic2 жыл бұрын
@@jonathang.5092 There is indeed this perception in brewing circles that "mutate" = bad. But it's perhaps worth noting that Kveik strains themselves are mutations... mutations in this case that come with with substantial benefits!
@IanRushtonMusic2 жыл бұрын
@@Kveiksmithdaryl I actually now consider this 'matured' version of Voss to be my 'house' strain. And, I will soon get my hands on some Lutra... and hence look forward to another few years of brews fermented from a single yeast purchase! 😎

Do you re-use any other yeast? I'm making a 5 gal lager with 2 packets of W34/70 at $10 CAD each and I'd like to re-use it for at least a couple more batches to save some money. I'm planning on brewing the exact same beer and just pitching the wort on top of the yeast cake from the previous batch. Thoughts?
@Kveiksmithdaryl2 жыл бұрын
Totally possible! I've reused Wyeast 1318 London III Yeast before and found it to be even better the second time around. Every time you reuse you obviously risk infection/the yeast evolving, but so long as your being safe and clean you should be fine!
