The easiest way to visit Chicago!? Riding the South Shore Line from Dune Park to Millennium Park!

Riding the South Shore Line has to be the easiest and cheapest way to get into Chicago! We take the train from Dune Park to Millennium Park in Chicago. You can ride from South Bend Station all the way to Millennium Station if you want to.

I go through step by step as we buy our tickets and jump on the train in Dune Park. The entire ride takes about 1.5 hours and takes you right downtown Chicago next to Millennium Park and just a few blocks from the Loop and the L Train.
We spent the next day doing a food tour. Check out that video for more of Chicago! This was certainly the easiest way to visit Chicago. I would say it was one of the cheapest too! I would totally take the South Shore Line from Dune park to Millennium Park again next time!

South shore line is a truly cool train. Whenever I visit Chicago I like to ride it to Hammond and back so I can visit 2 states in one trip.

The South Shore Line also survives because it has no competing oyher passenger railroads being the sole passenger carrier in NW Indiana. The North Shore Line and the Chicago Aurora and Elgin had direct competion from the Chicago Northwestern for much of their distances. Also there were no transit agencies back in the 1950s and 1960s to save these 2 lines.

The South Shore Line started as an electric trolley/streetcar line in East Chicago in 1901. It is still in existence because it got some lucky breaks due to its geographic location. I grew up on the south side of Chicago and we used the South Shore Line a few times for trips if we were going to Indiana. if we were going downtown, we would ride on the suburban commuter trains operated by the Illinois Central.

Last year in October, I got to ride a South Shore Line train all of the way from South Bend to Chicago and then back to South Bend. I stayed at the La Quinta Hotel just south of the airport so I could easily walk to the train station. Yes I did enjoy my train trip.

If you or anyone else would like to know more about the history of the South Shore Line, there are web sites with more information about the history of this passenger railroad line. We moved away from Chicago when I was a teenager. I have visited Chicago four times since we moved away but my visit last year was the first time I got to ride on the South Shore Line all of the way from South Bend to Chicago and back to South Bend. I do remember my parents complaining about how difficult it was to find almost non-existent and expensive parking in downtown Chicago.

Also there is a book by William D. Middleton about the Chicago, South Shore, and South Bend Railroad if anyone is interested in learning more about the history of this railroad and its story.

@laurencegray4720: The North Shore Line started out the same way except it was in Waukegan ILL. Unlike the South Shore Line it always had direct competition from the Chicago North Western and the Milwaukee Road. The South Shore Line had no direct passenger train competition from other railroads being the sole survivor and only passenger railroad in Northwest Indiana.

@@LauraOnTheMove Bikes can only be boarded at stations with high level platforms. I think eventually the South Shore Line will have high level platforms installed at the rest of their stations including Beverly Shores IN.
