I think my harvest also serves as an example as to why you're not supposed to dig in a bag system because you mess up the layers. I always learn the hard hard way lol.👍🏼🪱😃

Your worms will sure love all that pumpkin and prepared bedding. Harvesting bins to me is so rewarding, like eating anything fresh out of the garden. I may end up with one of those vermi bag systems, the large grow bags I use are great, but they do get pretty heavy for this old back. Excellent video Ann, Stay Well!!!!

Yes, moving things around is a big problem. That's why I've gone to systems that I don't have to move. If I didn't have a worm channel I wouldn't have to move the tower either LOL. But you know got to take pictures of pretty worms. 👍🏼🪱😃

Great looking bin Ann!! I love the VermiBag systems I own 3 of them and will own the new wedge bin by the end of this month!! Keep up the great work!!

Ann, After watching one of your Big Blue wedge videos a month ago, I prepped bedding and ordered red wigglers that day. Thank you for encouraging me to start my own worm room! (btw, I like your wedge method a lot more than that bag with its zippers)

If your worms are not escape artists, then the bag's not necessary. 😃🪱👍🏼

Yeah I think I saw that in one of your videos you soak them in water first. I 100% should have done that because now they're brittle and super hard. Yours will probably get consumed before mine do. 😁🪱👍🏼

One thing that I have found in research is that worms have been used for bioremediation of contaminated industrial sites. They're able to take in many things and stabilize them. That being said, many of the things that are in paper are probably broken down by the shredders like the pill bugs and the mites and the springtails before they even get to the worms. 👍🏼🪱😁

Hi Ann, I wonder if the worms start moving away from the vibration of the harvest and the subsequent punching, i.e., start moving to the top. I know how you said they were sensitive to the rumble of trucks going by. I wonder if you'll come back to a pumpkin seedling forest from all those seeds! ~ Sandra
@PlantObsessed
@PlantObsessed Ай бұрын
100%. I am expecting a forest which I think will look cool. If it was warmer they might move faster away from me punching the bag. It's about 65 f here right now inside the house. 👍🏼🪱😁

Would the vermi bag be sustainable outdoors in temperate climate (pnw). I am once again looking to adjust my system 🙈

I'm not sure what the low temperatures are in your area, but I know that people in Florida have bag systems and are just fine. Red wigglers European nightcrawlers only though. 😊🪱👍🏼

Hi Ann, I have a question that I haven't heard you or any of the other worm farms address. I only have 2 to 4 bens of worms for my own use. I started out 3 years ago with 83 worms ..had bought 2 containers of fishing worms...all of my worms have come from the original fishing worms. My question is do I have to worry about inbreeding, like you to with other animals such as dogs and cats? Happy Holidays Sue
@PlantObsessed
@PlantObsessed Ай бұрын
From what I have read, worms are not that complicated with low genetic diversity. They are not affected by inbreeding like mammals.😃👍🏼🪱

I don't see how any of these other set ups are easier than Blue?
@PlantObsessed
@PlantObsessed Ай бұрын
Oh no! It's not easier for sure this system's main focus is to contain the African nightcrawlers because in my particular environment with heavy traffic and heavy storms, African nightcrawlers all crawl out of the bin and die. Some people also like it for tidiness sake. He looks nice and finished. You could throw a tablecloth over the top of it and nobody would be the wiser. 😃🪱👍🏼

@mnj741G Ай бұрын
@@PlantObsessed I do remember you saying that now that you mention it. I haven't paid attention to mine during heavy storms. We get our fair share here in N Texas. But otherwise my house is very quiet as far as traffic. Makes sense.

Worm bins can become sludgy if they're allowed to become too wet due to food or if they've been running for a really long time. The castings are re-eaten by the worms, almost making mud glue. To correct it, I will usually add dry paper shredded or coconut core. Let me know if that works 😁🪱👍🏼

Why don't you chop up the food faster compost
@PlantObsessed
@PlantObsessed Ай бұрын
I actually don't want it to go faster. I want this food to last for at least 3 weeks. I have quite a few worm bins so I don't need more castings fast, especially this time of year. But I agree if it was pureed they would go through it in a week. 👍🏼🪱😊

I 100% agree. African nightcrawlers are really kind of a pain in the butt. If I didn't have a worm composting channel, I would probably only have red wigglers in European nightcrawlers with blue worms in the mix. 🪱👍🏼😊

Your material looks really dry and not even worked through. It all looks like coco coir that dried out and the worms never went through it.

The bottom of the bag should be dry, but I agree there are a few too many bits in the harvest (not counting pits and hard shells). Might be too dry too far up so they stop working on it?
@PlantObsessed
@PlantObsessed Ай бұрын
Yeah the bottom of the bag is supposed to be drier but there does seem to be a lot of unfinished items which is probably from me mixing it up too much which is 100% my fault not the bag. 👍🏼🪱😁
