Very nice Ann. I started a bin with 100, 30, and my last one with 15 worms. And I haven’t seen anything weird with the worms. For the aphids do you have any castile soap like dr bronners liquid soap? About a tablespoon to a quart of water, it disrupts the exoskeleton. If there is a lot you may need to apply every few days to knock them way back or all together. I made some liquid soap at my brother’s last year.

May I suggest buying a Kitty Litter sifter to help out sifting the plastic pieces out of your worm trays. It might not get it all but it will get most of it. I hope this suggestion helps. I am enjoying all of your videos. Thank you

Hi I notice that you are not grinding your egg shell to a fine powder, worms can not bit off pieces of egg shell because of the lack of teeth. but need the grit for their gizzards to grind their food up so it can be digested. I enjoy your videos keep on making them and I will continue the watch all that you make. Thank you!

Thanks for the shout out Ann!! I would say in the shade, an outdoor Urban Worm Bag or VermiBag Mammoth is good to go in zone 9b Tampa Florida...but because mine does get some direct sunlight, the summers can be brutal if I don't keep frozen water bottles on the surface!! I've tried to provide shade with tarps, and pull down shades but the winds and rain always foul them up after a couple of days, so I'm always on high alert from about June through October. When we travel it gets to come in the house! I think my tofu was such a problem because I put a massive chunk in a relatively smaller bin. Fantastic video Ann, love the Q & A!!🪱🪱🪱

I doubt you will get colored worms. I have newspaper shreds in the catchment bin under my worms. Despite the idyllic environment I provide for my critters, some of them prefer to dive down and live in the wet newspaper shreds. After a while they can 100% convert the newspaper to castings. The casting are gray, the red wigglers are still red. I assume if colored paper had been used the castings would be colored and the worms still red.

Ya know I started this hobby solely to have fishing bait, but it has taken on a life of its own. The Europeans eat more than I originally thought they would and make much more castings than I originally planned for. So I guess that's a good "problem" to have. In fact, for my garden this coming year I'm planting stuff just for the worms.... stuff I don't particularly eat like squash and pumpkins.

From what ive heard when your worm bin becomes overpopulated, the worms stop breeding, i bought my worms ( redwigglers) in 2018, the guy i bought them from told no onions, tomatoes, papaya, im not sure what else, with that very little info on breeding worms, so i started to google, then went to youtube, i think the first worm farmer i found was AV, from him i discovered Emily, Lillya ( not sure if her name is correct) and so the list grew, Dee, Aj, You, Patrick from vermicompost, Urban worm farming, oh and Vee the Garden and Worm Lady, and also Whyte Davy, and from each i learned something, copied some of Av' s methods on extracting worms from the castings and it worked well, as for my worms, i bought 500 if i remember correctly and i just kept in splitting the buckets with each harvest😂, didnt know you could leave them and they'll be fine, but now im not so much worried about splitting anymore, i now have maybe like 20 containers buckets included with worms

To answer the question of why not make the casting too wet, it can also attract a lot of flies or bugs that love this moisture. If your bin is in a house it is always better to keep it as dry as possible without harming the worms.

Hi Ann, that shredded paper looked like you're getting ready for Easter! All I've ever seen on worm breeding that may apply is that 20% of worms carry the genetic potential to be larger than the norm. Clearly, their breeding is sexual to provide heterogeneity in the species. However, if it was a small population to begin with, there are only so many combinations! The other interesting titbit from research is that worms will interbreed with other species, but cocoons, if produced, yield infertile progeny. Thus, some of your worm population is consuming resources but not able to breed themselves. It's amazing that we can remember trivia like this, but (in my case) forget a pot on the stove! ~ Sandra

I was visiting a pest control colleague down in Panama City FL many years ago. The hornets down there had pastel colored nests from scraping off stained wood that they chew to make their paper nests, pretty cool, do not know if the dye in the colored paper will do the same thing for the worms, interesting to find out. I don't mess around blending food anymore either, I am pulverizing more things to add to the worm chow, when I think of it. The Vermibag behaves very similar to my grow bag bins, the sides dry out pretty quickly, if I think of it, I will take a watering can to the interior perimeter of the bag every few days after a feeding to keep it moist. Have you done any harvests from that bag? Have a great week Ann, Stay Well !!!

I think most of the “don’t feed’ rumors regarding worms can be attributed to odor issues. My husband refused to put onions in the outdoor compost because it would ‘chase away the worms’. I had to show him a rotten onion with worms mobbing it before he gave up on that wives tale.

I am new to this, although I got some worms about 6 months ago. I have 2 bins; one is outside, and some neighbors just put stuff there; I do not have any type or order in that one; I try to clean it; I just dump it in my garden; I try to separate some of the old stuff to put in my garden, I have a very good ecosystem; my worms have over cuadrple in numbers; I have mites and ringtails, among other critters... I have a second bin, like a 40 gal bin, I try to separate the wormballs and put all the new stuff on one side, and let see how it goes. I do not use a lot of bedding. is that wrong? My worms seem to be thriving in a very good ecosystem and smell amazing!

Hello Ann...for the 1st time , some worms crawling out the big bin...why is that, please...
@PlantObsessed
@PlantObsessed 6 күн бұрын
Crawling out of the bin could be caused by several different things. If the bin is new, they are probably just exploring. If you gave too much food it could be there running from it. Where I live. We have very bad storms and that seems to make them panic and try and leave bins. I also live on a busy road and sometimes when there is a lot of semi truck traffic it does seem to disturb some worm species. Let me know if one of these options seems to be the most likely. 🪱😃😃
