Had forgotten that Peter S. Fischer created this. He also made "Murder She Wrote", and Jim Hutton's "Ellery Queen". Talented man.

"What shall we name our baby daughter?" "How about something unique and intriguing... Seven!" "Seven. That's perfect. And for her middle name?" "Ann." What an interesting discussion Seven's parents must have had....

Thank God they didn't choose "Zero". The strangest name I've come across so far is "Apple" Gwyneth Paltrow's daughter. I don't know if she was conceived in New York City or Gwyneth only ate apples while pregnant😊

Fun Fact: "Ted Leighton", who gets the story credit for this episode, is the registered pseudonym of William Link and Richard Levinson, who mentored Peter S. Fischer in TV. Most likely, the story came from Levinson & Link's back files, and Fischer got to do his own rewrite with L&L's blessing.

Though like most NBC series from this period it only lasted a few months until it was cancelled by the network, this is a very good example of the production quality, set design, pacing, writing, tone, look and feel of popular commercial television in the late 1970s and into at least the early 1980s. I wouldn’t call it great or excellent television, but (at least, I believe) it is a very good example of programming at a particular point in time in broadcast history.

That was before the networks discovered “reality”. Production is so cheap and profitable, why go back to quality.

This was broadcast for four months from September 1979 to January 1980 at the nadir of the NBC TV network. They were 3 out of the 3 of the three major commercial networks. They would put series on the air and if they weren’t hits within half of a season they were cancelled. Things turned around after the network was taken over by Grant Tinker (former MTM Productions president and Mary Tyler Moore’s ex-husband) who got out of the way and let series like “Cheers,” “Hill Street Blues,” and “Family Ties” (to name just three) that were ratings failures their first seasons become wildly popular “must see TV.”

@@inkyguy This actually was from an re-airing on CBS in 1990 (hence the promo for NORTHERN EXPOSURE)--taking advantage of the fact the people behind it had given CBS the monster hit MURDER, SHE WROTE.

BTW, when this was broadcast around 1979 $10,000 was a half decent annual salary for the head of a family.
