My dad, and my cousin were Manfred B. Lee and Frederic Dannay, the writing team that between 1929 and 1971 created Ellery Queen. and his world in novels, short stories, editorials, and "Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine". Some really bad movies were made about Ellery, and the year Dad died, the Ellery TV show debuted. He and Dannay had nothing to do with the show's scripting or casting, but I think David Wayne in the role of Ellery;s dad was perfect casting.

I'm sure it contributed to my love of detective stories as I was growing up. I also read all the Agatha Christie novels when I was about that age, too. Edited to add: this episode features a manner of death which sadly came to Brandon Lee in the making of ``the Crow.'' 'Reminds me of the ``cul de mort'' episode of ``Nero Wolfe.''

Shame on NBC for cancelling this after only one season! Unlike other TV murder mysteries that focus too much on the dramatics of the case, Ellery actually gave all the evidence. You just had to be observant, and you didn't need encyclopaedic knowledge like Sherlock Holmes (though I also love Holmes). Maybe the plots aren't super complicated or unique, but they're well constructed and entertaining. The books are great too, but Hutton's talent really takes the character to another level. I loved watching this show as a kid. My brother and I would argue over our theories during the breaks and sometimes we made little bets -- I remember one episode with an Alice in Wonderland theme where I had to buy him a milkshake afterward. I still love to rewatch them with him and see if we can remember all the details. Maybe at the time the show didn't have the biggest audience, but I don't think NBC gave it a fighting chance with a single-season run.

@Tom Lowery Accurate or not, that is what I have read - The network thought it made people think too much for them to view it as relaxing entertainment. This show is probably my favorite television series, but it definitely has its faults. Some of the clues are a little much, such as in the pilot episode when the victim unplugged the television at the exact moment a sun was on the screen. It’s a good thing it wasn’t supposed to rain, then they never would have found the murderer. I could see why people might not have continued watching. Still, whatever the reason, it’s a shame there aren’t more episodes. It’s just good fun.

It got a full season and all its episodes aired, which is more than most new shows got on NBC at that time. Particularly if they were scheduled on Thursday, where they were in the toilet. This was back when NBC cancelled everything except for 5 shows each year, in case you forgot. Midway through this season, there was this newspaper article that ran in multiple papers about NBC's ratings problems. The title was "Heads Are Gonna Roll". In a panic, their neurotic jew executives started yanking half the network off the air and throwing the remaining segs in the trash disposal, trying not to make heads roll. They even did it to "Petrocelli" which was in Season 2 and only had a few episodes left to run (they never ran them... not that that's surprising, they never aired all of "Ironside's" episodes either... and they only had that on for 8 seasons). Actually, that article turned out to be prophetic because The Mad Programmer's head did roll a few weeks afterwards. And then the terminal narcissist Paul Klein came in, and he was like, "Whatever, I don't want any of his stuff."

In a sense, Jim's son Timothy Hutton followed in his footsteps - with his role as Archie Goodwin in the now-defunct A&E series "A Nero Wolfe Mystery" with Maury Chaykin (which also left the air too soon). But that "Ellery Queen" failed in this way was also indicative of the (low) state of NBC by this period, foreshadowing the utter disaster that was the Fred Silverman era.

I just watched the pilot to Ellery Queen ( “Too Many Suspects” aired March 23 1975). First glance of the regular "4th wall broken" moment makes me realize what may have inspired the SNL sketch "Minute Mystery" with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi (the 2 installments of this running sketch aired in 1975 at the start of SNL's first season...)

This is really cool. notice the difference in audio quality between the local spots and network. some stuff about the old days I do not miss, like how bad TV audio used to be.

Nice tracking shots at the start of the second act. Cinematography we rarely see these days.

Great series....watched with my late father. We loved it and like most shows we liked...cancelled pretty quickly! 🤪

I only came across this show because of the (now a couple years old) video made by Oddity Archive based on Ellery Queen's FIRST home, the Dumont Network. I then watched the episode he highlighted, and when this episode came on, showing that Vincent Price, of all actors, was in the episode, I HAD to watch it! XD

I loved this series when it ran back when. Now I wonder if any of the actors are still alive. Jim Hutton, David Wayne, Vincent Price, all gone, of course, and all the actors Inspector Queen wanted to see were all old when this was made. Norma Shearer? I'm not sure I ever saw one of her movies, but I know she was a presence back in the 1930s.

Thanks for posting this, I enjoyed the show. And it was so much fun seeing all these commercials again, and appreciated that you told who the announcers are.

This show was cancelled because it wasn't pulling in the ratings. I'm puzzled that folks didn't tune in in large numbers. Life is filled with "might have beens". Same for Nero Wolfe and Tom Hutton. Oh well. RIP Jim Hutton.

The "brilliant" executives at NBC who likely axed this quality show rather than supporting and promoting it would have been the ones who drove the network to near destruction. Grant Tinker, Mary Tyler Moore's husband at the time, and co-founder with Moore of MTM, was given the job of NBC president and saved the network. His guiding principle was to get out of the way and let the creative people do what they do best. As a result NBC was revived creating hit show after hit show in the 1980s and into the 90s. Too bad Tinker, who recently died, wasn't around to save this and keep NBC from sliding down hill.

Well, it was a shame to cancel such a loving TV show...Jim Hutton, David Wayne ...rest in peace.

Agree 100%. Perry Mason was my all time favorite Mystery, but Ellery Queen was a close second. First with Jim, then Timothy. Watched them and read them for years, over and over. And you were right, they didn't give it a chance the second time around. Yet they put all this crap on TV nowadays. I watch 3 TV shows now which are on hiatus right now. Burkes Law was another show I liked in the day. I can get that on my Tablet as well now and I've been Binging. Now it's Ellerys turn. I also liked the Nero Wolfe stories but I didn't care for the guy that played him so I don't watch that one anymore. And Doris, Jim Hutton and his Son Timothy looked exactly alike, almost like twins, except for the age difference of course.

I'd like to see the first episode of this series it had some real good stars in it, as well as having Guy Lombardo playing himself I think, it was about a wealthy man who disinherited his heirs on New Years Eve
@hx8234 жыл бұрын
Among them in that episode was Joan Collins (Star Trek and dynasty). Another piece of trivia is that the victim was portrayed by Thayer David who had previously portrayed Nero Wolfe

Thayer David also portrayed the learned Professor T. Elliott Stokes on the classic “Dark Shadows” in addition to several other fascinating characters, like Count Petofi and Sandor Racosi.

Jim Hutton was perfect as Ellery Queen and David Wayne as Inspector Richard Queen was also great. There was some good supporting cast members, like John Hillerman as Simon Brimmer, and Ken Swofford as reporter Frank Flanagan. Now I don't know what was more disappointing, that the show only lasted one season or that Jim Hutton died.
@tomservo569544 жыл бұрын
They downplayed the Simon Brimmer character, when they realized they had to write two different scenarios...one for Ellery, and one for Simon--logical, but pointing to the wrong character. Frank Flannagan could make guesses and jump to conclusions.
@triciajohansen71243 жыл бұрын
Both, that Jim Hutton passed away and the show was canceled.
@kensellers40822 жыл бұрын
I liked John Hillerman as the haughty Simon Brimmer very much. But, that Frank Flanagan character was just too loud, crass and obnoxious. I was always glad when it was Simon Brimmer matching wits with Ellery Queen and not the insufferable Frank Flanagan.
