Decades ago I read all of his books. His son co-wrote, then solo after his dad passed, sounding the same. Audiobooks now are great when driving and such. Thanksalot

No one calls VIA Rail Vee Eye Aye. It is VEE-a. From the Latin work via. Should have been easy to research.

That's a very provincial mindset. When you say "no one", you're referring to the geographically limited subset of listeners who are familiar with that rail line. Audiences elsewhere will mis-hear "VIA rail" as "via rail" and get a thoroughly incorrect interpretation of the text. Your offended sensibilities notwithstanding, pronouncing the letters individually is not the best way to read it.
