See, with Mr Ripley, I would’ve just changed him about three times as much for doing the older, bigger beasts, and also made him pay for any marks on my trousers ect ect, if he didn’t fix the gates, or just say “ oh I’m so sorry, I can’t come out to your place till you fix the gates” I’d also turn around and go back home when I found he was at the pub!

A few weeks ago i remember thinking if i could only have 1 hour in a time where people where kind, loving and respectful of each other and there was no deseption. Thankyou for reminding me this isnt a dream it was like this less than 100yrs ago

Oh look, another person who romanticises the past as if it were a utopia. These books are largely fictiononal, and the stories that are based on real ones have obviously been embellished to give them more narrative. Herriot also faced plenty of disrespect and meanness from some of the farmers in these books. He also left out lots of negative stuff like WW2 because he wanted to create a feel-good book. You must be associating with the wrong people if you are only getting unkindness and disrespect. In my experience I meet way more nice people than bad people. You get out of life what you put in, if you go into things with your negative mindset and expectations then that's why you will find.

Even tho this book was written in 1945 it reminds me of what is brewing politically in 2024. I guess the point being, human beings (or talking animals) never change. Well read and thought provoking.

I have this book on my shelf, I watched the PBS series and this was one of the only forms of entertainment for my elderly father before he died. Geez I just remembered I got the tapes from Blockbuster. wow. Thanks for these hours of enjoyment.

Brits have many common expressions everyone says all the time. Americans have not one. Except nowadays too many say"like" in EVERY sentence every 3 words as if stupid.

Disbelieve one can be "too fond", love another too much". I normally have a cat an a dog knowing in time I will lose them both. When mt Australian Shepherd, May got cancer, died, I quit eating for a long time. In a picture of me from then I look like id been in a concentration camp. Love an miss each of them an know they will all leave me.

Thank you so much for this series of beautifully written well narrated stories. As an an author this is inspiring. Read his animal series long ago without knowing there were lots more. Narrator is easily understandable compared to this Californian than most other Brits. Narrating my own adventure stories, this shows me how well it can sound. Normally disliking listening to someone reading your recordings show me how wrong one can sometimes be! So thanksalot from a new fan. Appreciate your efforts knowing the work you put into it.

Both of his kids wanted to be vets but everyone discouraged his daughter back in those days. She changed to become a people doctor from the pressure. Her Dad regretted it in the end.

I was rather upset when I found out they aren't really his memoirs but novelizations. I wish I had never read the introduction to the _The Real James Herriot_ . I was so upset I didn't read the book. I know everyone talks about a post-truth society, but back when he was writing and I was reading his books (1970s and '80s), there _was_ such a thing as truth, and we related to it differently than we did to fiction. It took a long time for me to enjoy the books again, and it is still not so much.

timeless,precious tales beautifully told.I wish we still had vets like this, those days are gone,I fear.I too laughed till i cried over the AI story, mmy husband thought i'd gone mad, couldn't even tell him about it without laughing hysterically.What a gift, what a lovely man.Thank you Christopher, I'm crippled from a stroke and this brought me such joy.
