Are humans smart enough to uncover the secrets of the universe? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice explore the singularity, string theory, free will and more with theoretical physicist Brian Greene.
Does quantum mechanics prevent an infinitely small singularity in a black hole if nothing can be smaller than a Planck length? Explore with us the mathematical breakdown at the singularity and what we know about what goes on there. Can relativity and quantum mechanics ever truly meet?
We discuss if anything in our universe truly has free will. What is free will to a photon that does not perceive time? We discuss the role of aesthetics in theoretical physics, whether string theory is right, and why it's taking so long to uncover the entire universe.
How is E = mc^2 actually used? We break down the mass-energy equivalence and how it is demonstrated in everyday life. What would a scaled-up atom look like? Is there a geometric center of the universe? Will we ever reach a point where quantum physics can no longer be proven experimentally? All that, plus, we explore what the next major breakthrough might be and whether it will shatter our understanding of the universe as we know it.
Thanks to our Patrons Christian Attwood, Tyler Loveland, Ruhan Periyacheri, Jeff Parker, Ed Thorton, and Dakota Ponder for supporting us this week.

I need help with my new years resolution. I've figured out how to change the stars. My idea for changing the stars includes Orion and Pleiades (Subaru). I figure it's time to put something up there that's relevant to us, don't you think? Take Orion's belt and Betelgeuse becomes the head with a baseball hat. Below the belt are two legs bending at the knee. The feet aligning perfectly under the bent knees. The 3 stars of Orion's belt align perfectly as the 3 fat belt loops on a baseball uniform. The spear pointing at "Subaru" is the bat being swung and "Pleiades" is the baseball flying away after being hit. Put it all together and you get, "THE ALL-STAR." In my case, I see a left-handed batter and I imagine a "7" on the jersey. Which makes him, "Mickey." (As it should be ;-) But you can put any number you want, making, "THE ALL-STAR," any player you want. It'd be wrong of me to not, at least, try. This is me, trying. Pass it on, please and thank you. Don't worry, where I come from, crazy is a compliment. ;-P

On the lucid dreaming topic: I once had a lucid dream in which I realized I was dreaming, and the dream was kind of creeping me out, so I wanted to wake myself up. When I woke up, it turned out that I didn't really wake up at all - I dreamt that I woke up, but was still actually asleep. That also broke the lucid dreaming effect, since I thought I was awake. I was super convinced that I was awake, too, until a few minutes later when I woke up for real. ....Or did I???

0:00: 🌌 Astrophysicist Tyson and physicist Brian Green discuss cosmic queries and their popular demand. 5:40: 😮 The speaker discusses their experiences with lucid dreaming and how they became aware that they were dreaming. 10:44: 🔬 The Plank length is a very specific number that represents the smallest possible length in the universe, and equations indicate that going smaller than this length is beyond the reach of today's equations. 15:49: 🌟 The concept of time passing for a photon traveling at the speed of light is explored in this video. 20:22: ! Theoretical physicists use mathematical aesthetics, observation, and experimentation to drive their ideas. 25:33: 🔬 We have a limit on how well we can understand the deep walls of the universe, just like dogs have a limit on how well they can understand quantum mechanics. 30:35: 🔬 Energy input increases the overall mass of an entity, such as a pot of water, as seen in the example of an electric car gaining weight on a full charge. 36:08: ! There is no geometric center of the universe, but if we include the time coordinate, the center would be back in time to T equals zero. 40:44: 🌌 The next major breakthrough in our understanding of the universe may involve a refined understanding of the Big Bang. I dont get it. Do you mean how Greene said that we dont have free will and everything is preordained by the laws of physics? So why arent the laws of physics completely capable of answering all our scientific questions? Wheres the "more powerful" laws of physics they talk about that combines quantum physics and einsteins relativity? And would that change their answers? Because if we have a law of physics thats not complete then how can we know if our every moment is predestined? And why dont our laws of physics work sometimes? Also in the many worlds theory, and multiverse theories its possible that we live out every choice and combination of choices that we can possibly make so is that really predestined or just another universe?

Finally, some one knows about being awake in your dreams. A guy was on I think Johnny Carson a long time ago and talked about how to be awake in your dreams. He talked about how to train yourself before you go to sleep to realize when you're in a dream and wake up inside of the dream. I started thinking about waking up in my dream before and while I was going to sleep. 3 weeks in I was dreaming, realized I was dreaming, started interacting with everyone and everything. I did it a few more times and life took over, I've never done it since. This is the 1st time I've ever heard anyone talk about this since then. g

A technique that helped me dream every night and remember them was to keep a cheap digital camera next to my pillow. My brain always knew it is there so when I wake up from the dream and reach for it then start recording when I remembered. Week after week it just kept happening over and over. The power of suggestion is helpful and so always thinking you're going to dream before bed and knowing you can record it when you wake up seems to be key for me. Another helpful tip is to go to bed and wake up at the same time and to try to wake up naturally. This can be forced by drinking a lot of water before bed, but I've also found animals making noises outside or buses will kick me out of a dream in just the same way and then I start remembering. After a while you'll get a lucid dream. I remember them more often and lucid dream rarely. A couple of my friends have been lucid dreaming since their childhood and it seems to be connected to having a parent who lucid dreams and gives them the suggestion that they can lucid dream anytime they want. I rarely hear people talk about this and so I got excited with this podcast because these are all brilliant people.

And this was the base of my first lucid dream: I was standing on a rail crossing, the train approached, and people tried to pull me from the rails, which didn't work as I was glued to the ground. And I told the people: Stop pulling me, this has to be a dream, otherwise I wouldn't be stuck here.

Great conversation, thanks! I just had a thought about the center of the universe question: because time is integral to space-time, whenever we look across distances in space we are observing objects at various ages, so all of the objects occupy a different space time. In other words, we have no ability to see the present, except for things in our immediate vicinity. Even then, the speed of light means very close things we observe are not truly in the present, which means that none of what we observe is what’s happening in the present.

I’m currently 67 years old and I’ve been a lucid dreamer since early childhood. Recently, I’ve gained a new level of control over my ability to fly while in this dream state. For years, I would always wake myself up because I feared accidentally hitting the power lines. This was frustrating. Now, I’ve overcome this fear. I can jump from very high places and fly from there, whereas in the past, I didn’t have that level of confidence. I also was able to help someone (in the dream) learn to fly, simply by suggestion; instead of ‘teaching’ them to fly, I only needed to suggest they try it themselves. It’s an interesting time for me in my dreams, that’s for sure. -Love you guys. My favorite podcast!!

Yeah. I have so many pop science books on my bookshelf I haven’t read and have little interest in reading at this stage but I’m always hyped to learn from one of my textbooks. It’s the only kind of book where reading is an activity rather than a passive action. The unfortunate reality is if you don’t actively study physics you’ll never know it, you’ll just think you do.

You need to listen to actual philosophers (Sean Carroll being a great example) instead of sitting with your distaste from the initial serving of philosophy from school!

The way I understand it: A planck length is the minimal amount where outside forces can influence something. Any less is the equivalence of having nothing at all. I'm not a physicist and so I can be very wrong, but that is the way it was explained to me.

A singularity is anyplace where our mathematics (or any attempt to explain via physics) breaks down. This is an interesting concept. The poets and prophets of old knew that an attempt to use language to name or describe the infinite was a futile effort. The Daoist states "the Dao that can be told is not the Dao (eternal constant)." And yet, the poets of old attempted to bend the meaning of words and "speak between the lines" to reach toward the infinite. This is interesting to me.

Dr Greene is one of the very very few participants in the Star Talk show that can quell Dr Tyson’s and Chuck’s exuberance in such a polite, humorous and entertaining- not to mention intelligent - manner! But then I’ve always followed and loved Dr Brian Greene for years!

This may have been discussed in earlier episodes, but I'm wondering if it's possible for a particle (of anything) can have zero density/weight? If it's not, then why can a particle of light (as found in the double slit experiment) travel at light speed, when it requires the thing that's traveling to have zero density in order to achieve that speed? Love your show, thank you for great entertainment and educational material wrapped up into one great package!

These guys are great, using humour in a very intelligent way and making an otherwise perhaps kind of "dry" topic more vibrant of ideas, thoughts and feelings. I hate listening to dry professors that barely show any emotions at all while "spewing" very complex science that is always vary vague, etc. This is a more fun format for science imo but need the right people ofc. I'm glad I stumbled upon this video, couldnt stop listening! 👌
