Hey adventurers, welcome back to Tents.and.Timber!
Join us as we dive into Day 13 of our epic 32-day journey from Ontario to Newfoundland and back. Today, we're exploring the Bonavista Peninsula.
Based off of some advice we received earlier, we woke up really early and had a quick bowl of oatmeal. The goal was to reach the Elliston puffin viewing site before the crowds of people and we had almost an hour drive to get there. Luckily by the time we arrived the fog and mist had cleared up mostly and we were actually able to see some puffins!
They were so adorable, waddling around their little island and leaping off to head out over the ocean in search of a meal. We had the whole place to ourselves for a time and decided to leave once large groups started to arrive. Not far away were some historic root cellars that we checked out as well, learning all about their significance and history. Next up was a quick snack in the parking lot before heading to Spillars Cove area and the Klondike Trail.
We hiked around on the trails here for some time, but mostly just sat and admired the 100 foot tall sea stack, known as "The Chimney." It is an impressive rock formation that has helped get this place designated as a UNESCO Geopark site. After collecting a few blueberries for a small pancake breakfast tomorrow we moved to the tip of Bonavista.
Here we found the Cape Bonavista Light House shrouded in mist and fog, but that didn't stop us from enjoying a lunch of grilled cheese on one of the many picnic tables.
After lunch we travelled down to Dungeon Provincial Park UNESCO Site to check out the sea caves. Again we sat and just took in what we were seeing. However the mist and rains eventually pushed us to leave and head back to our campsite at Lockston Path Provincial Park.
It was a full day and climbing into our tent was so welcoming that we just spent the rainy evening eating dinner in our old Woods Camping tent.
Make sure to continue to join us as we soak in the natural wonders, indulge in local eats, and make unforgettable memories in the heart of Newfoundland's wilderness. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and hit that notification bell to stay updated on our adventures!

I love Newfoundland. Your shots of the cliffs were simply stunning. I can't wait to go back there some day and your videos are going to give me all the motivation I need. Awesome stuff.

East Coast has some stunning landscape. Just got back from Halifax, unfortunately I was working and did not get to go hiking.

It can be a harsh landscape, but the views are totally worth it. We hope you have more time to explore next time.

You made me edumacate myself lol Puffins are nicknamed “parrots of the sea” “How did puffins get their name? The word puffin is thought to be derived from the word 'puff' which refers to swollen. And it is the puffin chick that contributes best to this name because of its round, puffed look resulting from its dense cover of down feathers - an adaptation for retaining body heat while the parent is off fishing.”

Wow thanks for that Alan! Glad we helped inspire that. The puffins we definitely a sight to see and were felt so fortunate the weather was on our side.
