I remember back in the day this game and inFamous were butting heads for popularity, though I think they’re both great in their own right. inFamous’ story was a really fun take on the superhuman origin story with a bunch of neat twists and turns, on top of (albeit some slightly janky) fun parkour and powers to play with, while Prototype was a full on power fantasy that was insanely fun to play, but had a lack luster story.

I feel like the story in prototype 1 is really good its just how they present it is really bad and uninteresting, i cant stop thinking about the potential movie or tv show adaptation. Funny thing is that prototype 1 had potentially a very interesting story but very poor execution and prototype 2 had a very bland story but executed a lot better, combat as well, prototype 1 had such a promising combat but it really lacked balance in weaponry and enemies and felt dissapointing at times while prototype 2 toned down your freedom in combat but delivered a lot more balanced and in my opinion more enjoyable gameplay

i like limiting my abilities - the game becomes entirely different if you don’t use defensive powers or get any health upgrades on a new hard save, goin around killing everything in one hit and not taking any damage just feels… bland, you know?

At least in new game plus it gives a fully upgraded Alex some room to actually stretch his legs a bit.

"get gud". but really, you get those powers at that point because you NEED them to win, not because they look cool or you wanna fill in all the upgrades... all it takes is learning how to dodge missiles (i.e. stay away from roads & buildings to stop the blast radius from getting ya, and dodge perpendicular to it's trajectory a second before it'll hit you) and then you CAN fly around wrecking helicopters with the flying kick + cannonball combo!

@@we-must-live Difficulty in Prototype is not up to player skill. It's pretty much all determined by either blind luck or cheese tactics. In other words, just spamming devastaters. Missiles are far too many in number to react to, melee attacks from infected enemies are far too quick to accurately dodge, and all the boss enemies either stunlock you to death or just one shot you like a Soulsbourne boss. The game takes the difficulty out of your hands.

to be completely honest, while i agree that it is a pretty edgy game that doesnt have the most groundbreaking story, i think it - and Alex Mercer's line deliveries via Barry Pepper - deserves a bit more credit. i get the sense that the story and the gameplay arent integrated at all, and then of course the more appealing and fun choice is to fly around and chop people up and go nuts. but i do really enjoy the military horror being told in the story. its a shame it doesnt really pick up until the third act, but i do get the sense that the game is at least trying to talk about something instead of being nothing but edge and edge (like the original The Boys comic for example.) the bad guy on the infected side was an innocent expecting mother whose brain was ravaged by a virus secretly spread in her hometown, and she and her child became nothing more but military assets. our main protagonist is a doppelganger of an amoral scientist who ends up becoming more heroic than the human he was accidentally created from. but i dont really blame most people for skipping the cutscenes. the story isnt exactly told in the most coherent way thanks to the puzzle piece plot. overall its an amazing idea to me but the execution wasnt perfect.

Most people, like the vid's author, probably think it's just a delusional edgy game and that the story doesn't deserve much attention when, for example, there's quite alot of great lore to be uncovered from people of interest to better make you understand what's happening. I doubt characters in this game are that much different from how people in important positions behave in real life and that's what makes this game realistic to me in that sense.

Prototype was the first M-Rated, single player game I ever got for myself. I remember reading about it in Game Informer magazine a year before its release and back before some of Alex Mercer's designs were finalized. But I knew pretty quickly that I wanted it. It was my own, gory, edgy Spiderman experience. I got it for PS3 and played the crap of it. Years later, I got it _again_ on Steam and continue to revisit every few years after. I can't ever fully put it down, but I'm glad for that. Also, thank you for making a video about it in current day. It makes me happy knowing other people still like this game and are willing to spotlight its strengths as well as critique its flaws.

Fun fact. Prototype is an asset flip from the cancelled Spider-Man 4 Movie Tie-In game I think most people already knew that but its a fun fact that i wanna share to some that didn't know :D

To know that Radical were developing Spider-Man 4 before that movie was taken out back and mercy killed. A development build exists and they planned on literally just reworking Prototype (same New York assets and all) into a Spider-Man game, and it looked phenomenal. Shame it wasn't meant to be, cause a Prototype esque Spider-Man game would slap so hard. Take the absurdity of Web of Shadows and mix it with a more realistic tone and look with a dash of webbing versions of some of Alex's moves to make them less ultraviolent and you've got yourself a stunning sounding game

I love Alex in the same way I love Vergil in DMC3. Both are edgelords with similarly brooding dialogue, but they back up that aesthetic by being *tangible threats* both in gameplay and the story.

true though plus with the overall gameplay and story of government cover ups, bioweapons, zombies/ mutants , shapeshifting powers into weapons and eating people how can you create a game like that without being edgy.

Yeah the twist of the virus becoming Alex would've been more impactful if the story was actually.... good. Like I was reading on the fan wiki a few months ago and was shocked that that actually happened because I don't remember the story putting that much emphasis on it

It's still incredibly cool how Alex Mercer is dead. You do not play as Alex Mercer, you play as the Blacklight virus believing its Alex Mercer. Oh and according to how you interact with Alex' sister, the Virus is actually NICER than Alex was.
