You can maximize the power output of the diesel, but ya also have to account for the electrical losses. DC-DC conversion, electric motor efficiency, Battery internal losses, battery capacity at low temp, battery cooling at high temp, etc. All I'm saying is, there's considerably more to it than just generator efficiency.

The efficiency losses incurred in this sort of hybrid setup are going to add up to more than that of a standard diesel cruising down the highway. Diesel engine straight to the axles vs Diesel engine to alternator to battery to motors to axles. Any other sort of driving this hybrid setup is going to quickly be superior, but long haul highway trucks is not really going to be where these hybrids shine.

@@vica153 especially for united states long haul, where you have 200mile straight flat roads, I agree. However in mountainous regions of the world it might be more efficient. It really depends on the scenario and use case. Sometimes pure electric is best, sometimes hybrid and sometimes pure combustion.
@jeremykamel9655
@jeremykamel9655 11 ай бұрын
@@vica153 That’s true for a long haul trucker that operate mostly on highway. However, vocational trucks don’t operate like that. Their engines don’t usually stay in the 1500-1900 rpm range very often. So, with the engine running as a generator, it’s runs at a constant RPM (diesels love that) and it’s set to run at a peak efficiency RPM. So in this application it’s very efficient. Especially when you consider a logging truck like Chase is. Where it charges its batteries going down hill with the log load and uses that power to get back up the hill to the log landing while empty.

Hybrid bucket truck with electric wood chipper will revolutionize tree work!!!! The cost of the diesel motors for wood chippers are insane since they became fully electronic with all the emissions garbage on them. So many solid machines out there needing a new motor. The best part… feed the power from the truck! How awesome would a wood chipper sound with no engine running, just the knives slicing wood!

There is the laski ls160 electric chipper. It's less noisy but still far from quiet. Would be absolutely glorious to power it off the truck though. Could make the chipper much lighter. I've been toying with the idea of a smaller trailer with a tipper, and a small chipper attached to the trailer that runs off the van battery. Stellantis have hinted at putting a 400v three phase outlet in their vans with the facelift coming this year. It would be great for smaller stuff where the customer wants to keep fire wood, there's already three phase chippers that do up to like 10-15 cm. Anything over that could be left for fire wood, and you could fit a lot more in the trailer than if you were just piling branches in. Would be great for my small scale one-man company.

@@PriffEV I saw a custom build that was a tandem axle forestry body setup with an elevator boom. They attached a bc1000 to the back, minus the trailer and motor. The chipper was powered by a hydraulic motor, powered by the truck’s hydraulics. The chipper could be swung to the side to dump, or removed like an implement. They did urban utility clearance work, so they were mostly chipping small cuts. I have to imagine putting batteries in a more central low position in a truck frame could increase stability in boom/cranes.

Dude same. '12 Dodge RAM. The 5.7L HEMI engine is fine. To get the equivalent horse power and torque as the kit, it's completely unrealistic. A supercharger on a 5.7L HEMI is $10k. And even then, the axles, transmission, the whole drivetrain basically is only rated for just over 500 lb-ft of torque. Anything over that and everything is crumbling under the pressure of monster truck force. But, keep the 5.7L HEMI to generate electricity and run it at absolutely peak efficiency (no idling/MDS bullshit with lifters wearing out cam lobes), you breath life into an older vehicle. And you end up with 500 ponies and ~8000 lb-ft of torque for the price of a new base model 1/2 ton truck. I wonder what the towing numbers will be when it's all said and done. I'm betting that it'll be 100% limited by brake rotors size rather than torque.
@jasongreene303

@sirukin7849
@sirukin7849 Жыл бұрын
@@jasongreene303 True, but that feels like a whole conversation that @EdisonMotors needs to do a video on. Converting an older 3/4 ton or 1 ton is not quite the same as how vehicles are made today for the speeds you typically are driving at. You could put a weight distribution hitch on a 1/2 ton Ram 1500 with the diesel-hybrid conversion and technically be capable of towing 15,000 lbs with all that excess torque, but that doesn't mean you should. E.g. A skid steer is roughly 9000-10,000 lbs, add the weight of the trailer and you're over the 10k limit that most modern RAM's are designed for. Any more and you'll need to upgrade to a 2500 or 3500. The kit definitely sounds like it'll fall in the realm as the RAM 3500's 6.4L HEMI or similar offerings. At least on paper, with the amount of horsepower/torque it has it aught to be capable of towing 30,000 lbs. Provided the hitch, suspension, brakes, etc were all up to the job.

It's not at all ideal for 3/4ton trucks doing normal truck usage. If you did do it, the awesome capacity of the new axles would be wasted in a relatively light/weak 3/4ton frame. From what I can see the axles and generator in these are spec'd for 1ton - 1.5ton commercial use trucks doing serious work. Lots of heavy loads around town, stop/start driving. Something like large box trucks doing deliveries around the city would be ideal. Or other types of work trucks that have high electrical loads from welding or hydraulic equipment.

You could make power packs, or whatever its called, instead of the ones used now (wink wink Ferdinand Porsche and his Tiger ideas). only solution for when they will start trying to electrify armoured vehicles To answer your question... You are about 5 to 10 years behind in your thinking that development started about 10 years ago and the first vehicles were built for testing 5 years ago. About 3 years ago... The US Army has a full division testing out a fully battery-powered HQ and all of their vehicles are battery or battery hybrid - they have a special M1 tank they have been testing out. They found out batteries last a lot longer so they use less of them. They found out the same thing as Edison Motors had with the feedback of their solar light towers. The sound or lack of sound makes life in the field a lot better, there is a great reduction in the supply chain for the division, due to the nature of the power costs are greatly reduced and it is a lot better to hide the division on the battlefield.

Man as much as this is awesome, I want an Edison built pickup truck. I like how you design things to last and design them to be worked on. Not only is the diesel generator electric great but also your design is what I’m mostly interested in. Stuff like a flas windshield because you don’t have to buy an oem one.

Construction companies should be looking really hard at this company…. A work truck that would have a crew cab .. 17 tone crane behind the cab with a dumping flat deck with folding sides . Under deck tool storage ,built in welder generator ,trailer hitch to haul an equipment trailer…. Then when your traveling down a hill your charging your batteries….. 4. Trucks in one. .. custom built for YOUR. NEEDS …. And you’ll be able to fix it your self !!!! It’s a. Wonderful thing to think about !!!!

Roshel builds their Senator APC from a F-550 base - electrifying one of those boggles the mind. Glad to see the semi axle is also coming as well - I think that hydrovac trucks could also benefit from electrification, but they tend to be larger than a 1-ton truck.

Just as a hobbyist & on a budget I don't think I'll ever buy one but that doesn't mean I'm not excited A-F about what you guys are doing. I've been thinking as a gear head and an environmentalist both that we need to be motor swapping, hybridizing & EV converting old iron instead of replacing the whole damn thing every 5-10 years. Plus, yeah, you nailed it - the torque is a huge benefit to hybrids and work trucks love torque. If anything like this ever gets doable on a home-grown half-ton sort of level, I'm in.

It's how i honour him. It's not my truck and it never will be. I would LOVE to have 4x4 and use it as a home backup generator. I really should reserve a kit, I'm just not sure I'll have the money at the time 😔. I know if he were still around he'd jump at this. It would be a no brainer.

Just a thought from a 20+ year electrician. If you teach your installer to work with an electrical contractor for the home charger you can use the vehicle for power outages. If you can turn off the main breaker for your house and back feed the charging station to the panel and turn on the generator you’ll have power for your house. As long as you turn the main breaker off before it shouldn’t feed back to the grid. If it does back feed to the grid with your mail power from the grid off you have a bad breaker or disconnect. This would be a good option for the USA market especially in a California market known for the power company shutting down the grid in high winds causing blackouts for your home. Also I live in Amargosa Valley NV. and both my FedEx and UPS delivery drivers come out here for delivery’s from over 2 1/2 hours away in Henderson. Henderson is south of Las Vegas and if I have a pain management appointment I drive to Vegas and depending on traffic it’s 2 1/2 to 3 hours each way. I’m sure that if you have someone interested in being an installer in Vegas if they installed one in a delivery truck they would probably have 2 company contracts after they do a demo for them. Also I live in Amargosa Valley the Nevada side of Death Valley. If you made a delivery van and had an optional front axle attached for dirt and muddy roads that the driver could turn on and off on those rainy days out here. I would install one of these on my 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 4X4 5.9 24 valve with an adapter for my motor because the engine has 194,000 miles on it and well maintained. I also was thinking about all the KZbinrs who build off road tow trucks and rigs in Utah and you working with one of them to test it out for that off-road community. The guy’s always upgrade their axles and suspension so they would be another group to target. The guys I watch are mostly rock crawlers in Southern Utah and look for low gear torque for crawling.

I own two 1947 Mercury (CDN built) PUs. These are basically 1942 Ford PUs with a lot of chrome. One is a One-Half Ton and the other is a 1-Ton fitted for dual wheels with dually trac outside wheels lined up with front wheels. The Half-Ton is my daily driver using a 350 Chevy engine and 4spd. I also have a 1954 Ford F100 (Cdn - 239 L-Head V8 with standard Ford F100 PU trans.) I intend to replace trans with a 4 spd. I am interested in converting my trucks to EV. I would like to keep the 350 and I am having the 239 rebuilt to high-end specs. The '47 Merc One-Ton I would like to move over to diesel-electric.

The kit is too small for my 21 F600 and my concerns on integration and or prefered platforms as ecu's and integrated systems change constantly and with different manufactures probably best to focus on one. Overall I have been screaming this idea for a while and beyond excited to see the outcome you guys are able to do. There is a market, but costs will always be the deciding factor in the end. Damn I want to build these kits into Fire Engines! My department has two that are due for replacement in the next 5 years at the tune of 1.5million each. New pump, Edison kit and reuse the body! The problem with fire engines is that they sit and then get worked hard, then sit. Many many times the body is fine but the powertrain and pump are worn.

I would love to see a feature to keep the batteries between 60 and 80% to increase that lifetime. I know that batteries are under the most strain when they are above 80%, so it would be great to see an option for extended life of them even if you have to run the generator a little bit more. Another thing, I'm sure you guys already know this, but a lot of people are probably going to back out when they see the price tag in its actual number, I'm sure a lot of your service truck guys are going to go through with it because their trucks are used for business. I know for me I reserved because I want to use it as a personal tow vehicle, but it comes down to if I have the funds available at the time it goes available. I've been starting up a business so a good chunk of my cash is going to that! I know this would probably add more headache for you guys but I would consider adding financing options if you can get a bank that will do it.
