Afrikaans was actually the language the slaves and servants spoke to the Dutch bosses. They were forced to speak Dutch instead of their native Khoi and San languages. They were not proficient in Dutch, and the creole language mixed with the bosses' language were first called kitchen Dutch or Hottentot Hollands. The Boers left the Cape during the Great Trek, adopted this second grade bastardized version of Dutch and renamed it as Afrikaans, to distinguish themselves from the Dutch in the Cape. They never started it, but claimed it by force and then forced the remaining Khoi and San to never converse in their own African languages again in front of them as not to be gossiped about.

I think he was nervous, because he kept forgetting some words and he tried to keep it casual but his personality failed him.
