@wamblytk43718 жыл бұрын
they recorded the waves coming off saturn and converted it into sound so it is what is would sound like if it wasn't in a vacuum
@patrickruddell34758 жыл бұрын
Kind of but not really. Its what we would hear if we could hear radio waves (assuming our brains would interpret it in those keys and octaves the pattern would be the same though)
@EddyKorgo8 жыл бұрын
true but isnt sound a radio waves? :) or micro waves? or light waves? explain pls
@patrickruddell34758 жыл бұрын
Radio waves are one of the lowest energy states of light. Radio waves move at the speed of light and don't need a particular medium to travel through, sounds moves as fast as the medium can allow it to example being sound travels faster in water than air. The different spectrums of light would be a good wiki search if you want to learn more.
@patrickruddell34758 жыл бұрын
Sound is not a form of light so its not the same thing as radio waves.

Is it just me or does the noise of Saturn sound very similar to the music of a 50's Sci-fi film? It's like a cross between 'Day the Earth stood still' and an introductory music to the ''The Outler Limits'.
@Razzy13129 жыл бұрын
AmNotHere911 No, it's not just you. It's almost uncanny. This and other records sound a lot like the score of early sci-fi/horror films.
@festinalente20899 жыл бұрын
Numinous123 Actually it is not *that* coincidental. This sound is a far cry -no pun intended- from putting out a microphone in space and listening (which would obviously yield nothing). It has been very significantly shifted in frequency and time. It sounds like this because it was made to sound like this. Any other shift would have made it sound very different. For comparison: imagine a mouse's squeak slowed down by a factor of 1000 or so, that would make it sound like an earthquake. Same here.
@festinalente20899 жыл бұрын
Numinous123 Indeed, the reason why installing a microphone in space yields nothing, is because it is a vacuum. You are on an interesting track for explaining the similarity between the "space sounds" and the sci-fi movies sounds. The Theremin is a very simple instrument. Actually it is an oscillator, producing (more or less) a pure sine wave, which can be modulated in amplitude and frequency by waving your arms. As it happens (and as you mention), this modulation process uses electromagnatic waves, but it could just as well have been done using two dials (so the "radio-waves" argument in itself doesn't hold completely). This produces an eery sound, not a harmonically rich one, like e.g. a trumpet. The radiation coming from the planets is -apparently- also a narrow-band signal, not a very harmonically rich one. Shifting these signals in frequency and time therefore also produces a sine function which appears to be modulated. Not intentionally, but because it is unstable, because of variations in the physics of its origin: the storms and interference you mention. The whole Theremin thing was a good insight!

+Yump Bagle If you don't know, as you said, and it's all so "confusing", how can you say it is "crap"? Rule number 1: If you don't understand it, study it. If something confuses you, it still doesn't mean it is not true. Saturn is worshipped even today without people even realizing it, in our popular culture, politics and religion. I suggest to study the history, mythology and symbolism.
@MyRedCarrot9 жыл бұрын
+Yump Bagle Well, I wasn't talking about "insane ramblings" but actual studies and facts. Often people condemn something that they dont understand (aka cognitive dissonance) without actually becoming curious and starting to investigate it. Moreover, "insane" is a relative concept that can be theorized in many different ways depending on the perspective. Also in science the concept of insanity has changed during time and different fields of study understand it differently. What is "insane" to you, might be totally clear to somebody else - and vice versa. For instance, eating industrial meat is "insane" and also "crap" from ecological point of view. Foucalt's Madness and Civilication is a good start if you're interested.

C’mon you guys! Saturn is a nice place. What if your vocal cords could only make low roaring and screeching sounds, and for some reason you had fangs, but you had a good heart and good intentions? People might run and be like omg a monster...but you are secretly an angel at heart. Just like Saturn. Saturn, the Sun’s chosen arbiter of knowledge and truth, judge and enforcer of the solar system; we have evolved to tremble at its voice and run from its judgments, and it is in this fear alone that we find a monster. Lo! Listen deep into the cavernous howls, and set a calm ear to behold the swirling cries that emanate from its atmosphere, and from your state of peace it will all join together in a resplendent symphony of the cosmos.
