one time I watched a video of the last 15 minutes of final fantasy xiv 1.0,, obviously they incorporated a lot of the shutting down into the story so that they could relaunch it but it had a really haunting quality to it. just a group of friends who had bonded through this game and shared so many adventures,, standing and staring at this massive red moon which has been growing ever closer throughout the story,, with the music being reduced to a chilling wind ambience with the main theme echoing throughout...it's honestly a masterclass in capturing the feeling of a dying world, and in combining real life contexts into the games story

i experienced this going to locker cleanout at my HS after covid hit. walking into the normally bustling hallway that was the home to my locker, homeroom, lunch, and after-school activities and having the motion sensor lights come on during daylight hours was jarring. It was the hub of my high school social life and it was deserted, dark except the lights through the windows through doors backlighting a trashcan perfectly in the center of the hallway. The weird feeling was compounded by the fact i was graduating. I ended up going around and taking a bunch of pictures trying to capture that feeling, and i still feel it when i look back at them. Sorry for the long lowkey unrelated comment, i that moment felt like something a lot of students in covid would relate to and i wish i could share those pictures in a meaningful way.

Today the zeitgeist changed. Everything is more hip (hipster/hip hop), the media is under demand, internet killed the mysticism. We have to go to midsommer to find some eerie horror. The mind-boggling skeletons are from a PS1 game called King's Field by FromSoftware. Apparently it was sort of a precursor to the Souls series.
@camelkingclarith2 жыл бұрын
To elaborate, Demon's Souls was conceptualized as a King's Field reboot before it was made its own IP. The Moonlight Sword is an important part of King's Field lore, and its appearances in Armored Core, the Souls series, and a myriad of other games developed or published by Fromsoft are references to King's Field. The archetype of the depressed warrior who gives you hints on how to progress while passive-aggressively insulting you originated from King's Field as well. Seathe the Scaleless and Black Dragon Kalameet from Dark Souls are deadass just White Dragon Seathe and Black Dragon Guyra from King's Field. There are a lot of other connections, but those are the first to pop into my head. There are also Shadow Tower and Eternal Ring, which have a similar relation to King's Field as Bloodborne and Elden Ring do to Souls, where they're part of the series but not really. It's also worth pointing out that way Demon's Souls is to King's Field, Sekiro is to Tenchu, another old Fromsoft series

"When a house is both hungry and awake, every room becomes a mouth." If you enjoy PS1esque horror games the "Haunted Cities" series by Kitty Horrorshow is a similar grab bag of existential dread and haunting imagery. Plenty of themes around exploring abandoned places, and hints at darker deeper storylines. Also Anatomy by the same creator is one of the best horror experiences i've had in years!

there’s something about the primitive style of PS1 graphics that really adds to the horror value of these games. i don’t know how to describe it, but horror games with primitive graphics feel a lot scarier than horror games on my pc with max settings hyper realistic graphics. it’s nice to see people capturing this graphical style in modern times because i really am a huge fan of the way it looks and adds to the eerieness of it all
@pasharighton2 жыл бұрын
i think it's probably because there is much more left to the imagination with these low polygon graphics. i love this style, i feel like it's an amazing way to capture the feeling of having a nightmare, where you have a general idea what's happening, but the details are obscure and you can't know for sure, it's just so much more impactful than when you can see your surroundings and a monster in full hd
@capital_L283 Жыл бұрын
As someone with really bad eyesight, like I can't read or type without my glasses and had to go weeks at a time without glasses on multiple occasions because capitalism, I can confirm only having a vague idea about what the hell is going on around you is way scary. It plays on that old horror rule, never show the audience the whole monster because whatever they're are imaging is way worse
@Ilusen_Autumn2 жыл бұрын
The monster design from Walk as well as how it's specifically looking for the player character and the home turns out not to be safe only makes me think the monster represents a family member (possibly the girl's mother-- the silhouette looks like a woman with shoulder-length hair wearing a skirt).

The lunar effect does seem to hold some sort of weight to it. A friend of mine who is training to be a paramedic told me recently that for some reason when there is a full moon they have an increase in patients in the emergency department. Not sure if it's an actual thing or just some weird coincidence

Was training to be a paramedic and worked as a medic and the full moon absolutely does bring out something weird in people. The ER is always extra full and you get strange cases. It’s just weird, but maybe we’re looking for it because we’re expecting it? Speaking it into existence, perhaps.

My sister is a prison guard. She says full moon nights at work when she worked nights were *the worst*. The inmates would cause more trouble, do more stuff to get attention from guards out of boredom, not settle down for lights out as easily, and there would be more aggression and fights or near-fights in general. She mentioned heatwaves can have the same effect, so a full moon during one was really bad news and meant a long, hard night of dealing with restless inmates. (She worked in a prison with out air conditioning, for reference) I also live in a large low-income apartment village. Full moon nights here are often worse than any other nights for domestic arguments or fights and other issues like that, to the point where I make sure my partner is always with me that night because I don't want to be alone. (I'm a younger woman who lives alone) We also had one of our buildings burn down on the full moon. Probably a coincidence, but... *shrugs* Just anecdotes, but in my experience, there's absolutely something weird about full moons for humans.

One of the things that can be a cause of thr eerie or creepy music in these games is the tritone. On the do re mi octave, there are two notes that stand out, fa and ti. When you put these notes together, you get the tritone. It can work in any octave and lead into other chords but by itself it is very attention grabbing and eerie. It was banned in certain churches for a while because they sayed it was full of sin. Many horror movies also use this to give the feel of something being wrong. These early developers while making the soundtrack for their games, possibly found this note(whether in a low or high octave). It is great for leading into different chords, as i mentioned before, so they would add this to their music track and think nothing of it. Hence why some of these early games have very unfitting creppy music.

Fiend’s Isle is a rogue like King’s Field, which is the game that the screenshot from the magazine is from. It’s the 90s precursor to the Souls games, they’re pretty much a third person King’s Field. The series has been dormant since the PS2, so it’s nice to see its legacy alive! Thanks for sharing these with us. :)
