Welcome back to the #RadicalRundown!
This week, we look at a segment from Episode 43 of Perception vs. Reality Podcast where Steve Freshour talks about what plugging and redrilling a bowling ball can do to the differentials, gross weight and RG.

Really interesting! Now can you take the plugged/re-drilled ball and use ThrowBot to see how it rolls differently than the unplugged ball with the same layout. That's the true test of how different the balls will roll. My hypothesis is that the change in ball motion will be negligible...maybe a couple boards different.

I've never had problems with rolling over the plug. One of my favourite balls was a second drill Ridiculous that went from pin down to pin up. That ball still had great shape. I love plugging and drilling balls. Most of my early arsenal was second hand stuff. Even now, I still buy second hand stuff and plug it to drill it for myself. I think fine details like this only matter in extremely high level competition. Even decent amateurs don't really need to care THAT much.

I plugged the thumb hole in my reality but didn't change the layout. It has great motion even though my pap is extremely different between thumb in and thumb out! A couple other balls didn't look very good and I had them redrilled.

Are plugged balls still legal to play with? I'm trying to move to 2-hander and have a bunch of thumbed balls.

I actually read through all of the USBC Rules today (riveting)... It should be legal. Although based on this video... Ill advised. Although as Phil always says "who comes in to drill the same ball a second time?" Says the man that has drilled a dozen of the same ball.

Perfect timing! I was on Facebook looking at used balls when this video popped up on my feed. Definitely something to think about before investing in used equipment.

This is something i have been waiting for a long time. Have just been hearing a lot of opinions without any actual data to back it up, most of those opinions were "plugging and redrilling won't change too much compared to a new ball."

In a plugged balls defense, he did drill through the core quite a bit on a core shape that is particularly sensitive to drilling changes. Id imagine there is quite a range here, but maybe a 2nd hand zigzag isnt on the table for most of us

So for the lay person, what is the impact on ball reaction?

As an ex-shop manager, I have always wondered what the actual numbers come out to be. Thank you for this.

I'm just a low average bowler but this stuf is exactly why we watch the Perception vs Reality podcast every week... Might not be the best bowler on my team, I am the most technical informed...

My take on this is not only will the numbers change because it was plugged, but the manner of that change is dictated by where the original layout was and how much core material was removed from the ball by the first drill. A guy can use this to "tune" ball to raise or lower the numbers more or less than simply drilling the ball only once with the second layout.

Thank you for this. Always suspected that since the core is more dense than the plug material, it would have a number of unexpected impacts on the redrilled ball. Please keep this type of technical content coming!

The differences in the two different new ball drillings is way bigger than the difference in the plugged ball drilling

I remember seeing this in the podcast and thinking the diff change wasn't that drastic, but I must've missed the follow up convo about tracking over the plug material. Completely changed my view on buying up used balls. RIP my wallet now!
