@@jollyrayda Yeah, Blackthorn speaks several languages I think. Native English and Portuguese too and I would assume Dutch since he sailed on a Dutch ship. Probably he speaks Spanish as well. I believe in the book he and Mariko speak Latin to each other when they don’t want to be understood by any Japanese who have learned to speak Portuguese. One thing that bothers me looking back on it from later in the show is how Toranaga via Mariko could have translated the Erasmus’s log and journals. Those surely would have been written in Dutch and John’s journal likely in English but neither language Mariko or any Japanese would have been exposed to or understand…. Just a niggle I can ignore of course 😝

Maybe i misunderstand the scene but i think the reason they backed off after Fuji aimed the gun is because they know she would for sure blow his head off, since its part of her duty to protect her master with her life. In a way she has no choice, although in her case i think she did not mind that much. Whereas John might reconsider and yield the guns and not waste his life for them, at least in their minds. If i am completely off please correct me.

yeah the late 16th century had a lot of advances in cannon technology, and it looks like John's cannons are expensive as fuck bronze cannons, they wouldn't be out of place in the 30 years war 50 years later. Gustav Adolphuses cast bronze cannons let him chew up a lot of Catholic armies, shame about his shitty vision that led to his death or Europe would be divided into Greater Sweden and Not Sweden today

The English had already established a standard for the manufacture of their cannon (caliber/weight/length) therefore they tended to shoot in a more predictable manner unlike other countries. They had also developed a method to make truly round cannon balls which also helped accuracy, other countries only developed this later.

It's actually both. English cannons like those were much more accurate than other makes at the time (like Miles said, standardisation of barrels, weight, cannonballs, etc). But, English sailors also had much higher standards of training at the time. They weren't just trained to use the cannons, they were also educated in all the mathematics of how it worked; angles, wind resistance, etc etc. When you're going to be firing cannons in unpredictable conditions, like firing at moving targets from a moving ship on rough seas, that sort of thing can give you the edge. That's what he's passing on to the regiment, not only do they have better cannons now but they're getting top-class training on top.

This is one of the first shows to show like accurate cannon injuries, people just burst, imagine being on a ship back then and having to navigate the mess, theres alot more clinging onto ropes for footing in peoples guts than a alot of pirate media depicts 🤢😂 its also why alot of military vessels have some floors painted some shade of red in an effort to preserve morale of the uninjured (and often times the very few survivors)

Natto is just fermented soybeans, The flavour is totally fine, its just that the gooey-ness is a bit of a turn-off for some people. I think around 25% of Japanese don't like it although it seems to be region-specific in most cases (northern Japanese tend to like it, Osakans don't).

Yes, they changed it because it was historically inaccurate in the books. The japanese were already very experienced with muskets and had used them extensively in the civil wars and their Invasion of Korea decades ago. The cannons make more sense, especially because English cannons were more accurate than what Spain and Portugal had at the time.

I think it's also a nice nod to the real person that Blackthorne is based on. In real life, William Adams was an experienced sailor just as Blackthorne is, but he was enlisted by Tokugawa to design ships, not to train soldiers. So focusing on his nautical and sailing expertise rather than his general military expertise follows quite naturally.

This episode is dedicated to the Cannon expert that helped on this show. He gave the idea that cannon would be the better one to teach them to fight the Portuguese where as the original shogun series had rifle shooting Blackthorne taught them and would have seemed pointless for the Japanese as the Portuguese would have had rifles they were great at using and, therefore no edge. Additionally, the historical figure Blackthorn is based on, William Adams did have a wife and several kids back at home in England andhe'd send money to them but would be doing similar stuff as he did here... without spoiling things here I won't say anything else. Worth checking if the history to make comparisons. Adulterer Adams😂

Fuji was from a high born samurai family and Omni, the guy demanding the guns, was just the nephew of yabushige and in charge of a fishing village. If he would have touched Fuji his entire family line would have been erased. So, her telling him to move on had more to do with her rank and position and less to do with the gun she pointed at him. It was as if he was being orders to do something by someone higher rank than him. So, he obeyed. Technically, Blackthorn was hatamoto but he’s a barbarian and they didn’t quite know how much authority he was given and how seriously they should take it. Then, as now, foreigners in Japan get a pass and normal rules that apply to Japanese aren’t always applied to foreigners.

I loved the framing of that cannon shot that killed Jozen. A blurry flash of light and the sound off the distance. The power of the shot, and the power of the consequences, framed behind a naive, but well meaning, child is beautiful. The violence in this series is quick, precise, and meaningful. Its not just for show. GoT had this idea too, at the start. They skipped battles all together in earlier seasons, but later seasons they dedicated entire episodes to it. One of the reasons the show went to shit.

While the Dutch and English Naval cannons were vastly superior to the Portuguese and Spanish cannons at the time there is no way the Portuguese would actually teach the Japanese how to use Artillery correctly its their one advantage in the Black ships if the Japanese knew how to use cannons the could defend there ports and the Blackships would lose their advantage.
