For a bit of context, the games are a satire/dark comedy, and they aren’t in the past, it’s an alternate timeline where the microprocessor was never invented, or remained in it’s early infancy (transistors and vacuum tubes remained the main processing tech) , so all tech is bigger and chunkier, atomic power became the norm, and the aesthetics of the 50’s/60’s continued to be the main style.
@-libertyprimev1-9028 ай бұрын
Iirc one of the destinctive splits was Vacuum Tube Technology advancing farther than it did for us, that coupled with the "Atomic Age" stuff gave rise to that "clunkier" and more stylized look everything has (and kept said look as it's shown by 2077 the "50's future vision aesthetic" still rung strong and true).

The Fallout world is actually set in the future, but is based on the 1950s aesthetic and mentality. Some things that may help you understand the universe and style of the show. 1) Nuclear power became common place. They use it to power everything from their homes to their cars. 2) The transistor wasn't created until much later and never really caught on. Which is why vacuum tubes are in everything and things look more clunky. Microelectronics were basically never a thing. 3) Fallout tech burns oil at about three times the rate our world experiences. This is what led to resources being so scarce and the world tensions. 4) Radiation is somewhat magical instead of instant death. Can still kill you, but sometimes it doesn't or not right away. 5) Some of their tech (especially medical) is way advanced compared to where we are (hence the stimpack Lucy uses when she's stabbed. It's a drug that causes the body to accelerate the healing process to be almost instant). Other tech is way behind. They also LOVE enhancement drugs. Steroids and ability enhancers were basically sold like gum is here. Ironically, with the last decade of overmedication in America I really feel like we're getting close to matching Fallout, it's just not as cool. 6) It crosses the line constantly between 'light' and 'dark'. One moment you'll be laughing at the sheer ridiculousness of a situation and 10 minutes later you'll come across some of the most depraved acts humanity is capable of. With all that in mind, and as a long time fan of the IP, I feel like the show captured the essence and spirit of this wacky place perfectly. Excited to see where they go next.

Hell yeah. Also. A key component of this timeline is that the transistor hadn't been invented by the time of the war. Everything was still vacuum tube tech. They also went all in on nuclear power.
@galadballcrusher81828 ай бұрын
I am so sick reading this misleading info on reaction comments. It is a vast misconception that it wasn't invented, it just was not that widespread and kinda rare. And before you ask for proof, the whole misunderstanding happens mainly with people who joined the game series only on 3 and then on. Anyone who played first 2 games would remember that in the first one the reason you as vault dweller went out on a quest was that the control chip on the water purifier was malfunctioning so the vault (13) needed a replacement or would run out of water. And at a point you could find and arrange send them a caravan loaded with water thus gaining couple extra months time to solve the problem. (Chips are comprised of "printed" micro circuits on a very small scale that are forming thousands of semiconductors/ transistors). And in second game as a descendant of the original vault dweller (who after his surface experiences and social exposition changed him and was not allowed enter back in the vault so he had founded a village in surface) you are send to find a suitcase that has inside a laptop with Congress library plus instructions on genetical alteration of plants as well seed samples called the holy GECK (Garden of Eden Creation Kit). Because your crops are failing and GECK allows adapting seeds to present environment. The laptop i mentioned as well your average pip boy would be impossible to make without transistors.

Since you guys are gamers, let me try and explain the first two Fallout games. Back in the late 90s, everyone was saying that computer RPGs was a dead genre. Developers just stopped making them for a while. So when Fallout 1 came out, RPG fans were starving for content of any kind. What we got was a completely standard RPG full of all the things CRPG fans love (right down to the isometric graphics, which were already dated by then). Game-wise, what was new was the sandbox-style game world, your decisions affected the world and how different factions treated you, and the setting. Back then, RPGs were *always* fantasy D&D knock-offs. The setting blew everyone's minds so much that a lot of us overlooked the sandbox stuff and faction stuff that is now pretty standard in computer games. What really made the setting pop was the writing and art direction. As you can see from the show it is a wild collection of stylistic influences, from a retro-future vision of the future from the 60s and 50s, the 40s/50s music, the absurdism, and and the dark, dark humor. As you'll see from the TV series (which gets the tone absolutely right), the humor is as black as the withered soul of a Texas Republican. One of the big positives of the Fallout series is that something about the setting and backstory makes it so that even bad writers can cook up some really interesting commentary on the modern world in the subtext. The Enclave gets a brief mention in this episode. They are basically the remnants of the American government. While the subtext around the Enclave shifts from game to game, most of the time, they are villainous representations of the bad imperialist/colonialist elements of the American government. The Brotherhood of Steel started out as a group dedicated to the preservation of pre-war (meaning pre-apocalypse) technology. They came to venerate pre-war technology as holy relics and it became a kind of demented religion. Inevitably, they leveraged their tech advantage into a military advantage. Their religion is kind of nutty. The Vaults were created by Vault-Tek, a pure evil corporation. These are full of the descendants of wealthy people who could afford to buy their way in. Everyone outside the Vaults are the less-well-off people who were left to suffer the full consequences of the nuclear holocaust in the face. Because Vault-Tek is pure evil, many Vaults were unwitting participants in truly insane social experiments. Vault 33 looks like one of the lucky ones that were used as a control for the other experiments. Ghouls are humans who were warped by radiation and other nastiness in the nuclear wasteland. They tend to live very long lives, but are also prone to going "feral," after which they become like zombies. Mutants are mentioned in the show, but not on-screen. They would be expensive to implement in live action because they would have to be CGI. Before the war, the military used the FEV (Forced Evolutionary Virus) to try and turn humans into the perfect soldiers. It didn't go right. They are big, green, have a lot of muscles, and aren't very smart (they were supposed to receive orders, not give them), but they are also pretty nuts and can only reproduce by using FEV to turn more humans into mutants. Because of the nuclear war, they escaped the lab they were created in. Rad-roaches are in the show. They will get explained in the show, so no need for me to say anything. Rad-scorpions are like rad-roaches, but are modified/mutated scorpions and much larger. I don't honestly know if deathclaws are in the show, but they are kind of a big deal in the game, so I assume they will show up later. They are genetic abominations created by the pre-war military with the intent of using them as soldiers for close-quarters fighting. They can take a lot of damage (it takes multiple shots to bring them down), and have a devastating melee attack. They tend to form packs (which is what makes them even more dangerous), and a small number of them are intelligent. Like the mutants, they escaped the lab they were created in because of the war, and they turned out to be very well-adapted for the post-apocalypse world.

Thank you for explaining all this! What a great summary! I never played any Fallout game but really love the show. A lot of stuff makes sense now.

1996 a year before fallout we had Elder Scrolls 2 and Diablo. In 1997 we got Ultima Online, Final Fantasy 7 as well as fallout. You need to remember there just weren't many games on pc released in the late 90's period let alone specific genres. PC gaming in the late 90's had like 10 releases a year. So its a bit of a misnomer to go Computer RPG's was a dead genre. When there wasn't any games releasing on pc to begin with.

With how roided up are bodybuilders are today you would not need CGI for supermuntants lol.

2:56 To answer the question. Basically after the bombs were dropped on Japan, there was a Cultural Time Lock. Time kept moving forward and some things about the culture changed. Also if I remember correctly, microprocessors weren't created. So everything ran off vacuum tubes or miniature nuclear reactors. Best way I can describe it. Hope that helped a bit lol

Roshi might not be interested in playing the games, but he might like watching some of the lore videos, it's an interesting IP

Lupa, when you said you played a little of 3 and 4, i didn't think that meant you didn't make it to the first town in 3 where you literally see one of these ghoul dudes for the first time lol. Roshi can definitely play 4 cuz the rpg mechanics are basically nonexistent except for level up options and weapon crafting

Binged the whole 8 yesterday lol great series. Looking forward to season 2

Welcome to the community, Roshi gang. There’s a vault in need of your help. It’s marked on your map.😎👍

Beat fallout 3 & Vegas working on 4 which is longer than a book. One of the things that I love is the variable story and storylines. Anyone can come out of a vault to see the decline of society in the waste land. He or she can be a good person in a bad situation. Hero or villain what will you do?

The weapon that was used at 24:54 is called The Junk Jet, you can load any piece of junk found in the wasteland and use it as a projectile to slay your enemies. The Junk Jet as it appears in the show is first seen in Fallout 4 (was cut from Fallout 76) and also technically appeared in Fallout 3 but under a different name, the Rock-It-Launcher.
@BrandonDenny-we1rw8 ай бұрын
Also introduced in Fallout 3 but its not available in 76
@Doc-Blitzkrieg8 ай бұрын
@@BrandonDenny-we1rw you are right, except it was called the Rock-It-Launcher in FO3. I thought I had seen gameplay of the weapon in FO76 but it must have been a FO4 clip.

The words you're looking to describe Fallout style are both atompunk and dieselpunk. I think it's a unique aesthetic that we literally don't see in other games. I love the games since I was in middle school million years ago and love it still 😂

Ghouls can live for a very very long time, they turned from the radiation and don't need to eat or sleep. There's also feral ghouls who are pretty much like zombies There's even ghouls from before the bombs that are still alive

So happy Walton Goggins is finally getting his flowers and lead roles after all these years as being the best goddamn side character in every movie and show he touches. It's about time somebody gave this man the spotlight. Justified, The Hateful 8, The Shield, The Righteous Gemstones, Vice Principals, the man don't miss.
