When the conditions line up, you can get some great kitesurfing elevator jumps! In this vlog we discuss what exactly an elevator jump is, the elements required and how it can be achieved. We also had some surprise guests show up at the beach - but you'll have to watch to find out why...

The scary part of self rescue, if you don’t fully wind your lines on your bar, then the circular motion of treading water can wind them in around your ankle until you cannot move your leg to swim. For this reason alone get the lines safely out of the way before the big swim.
@OurKiteLife
@OurKiteLife 5 жыл бұрын
Definitely, great tip! Getting tangled up in lines is never fun so wrapping them up and getting them out of the way is key

Norm's Big Window......I teach most people not to bother winding up their lines in a self rescue unless they have to. Just flag the kite and swim it in. If you played by the rules it should be the best method. Just winding the lines can be dangerous and wastes more time drifting down wind especially if your not practiced. Always better to stay away from the lines when in the water. Tight lines are safer than slack ones.... When kiting in offshore conditions you should always have a plan “B” if something goes wrong. Whether its a buddy to tow you in or a boat on the ready. Either way you’re dragging a kite so just flag it and start swimming🙂

daversj Interesting, maybe it’s lost in the translation but cant agree with your approach. When I screwed up a self rescue I did what you suggest and unknowingly wound the lines around both ankles swimming with the kite. When I look for the most recommended self-rescue method, it always starts with securing the lines. It would also avoid snagging on reefs or other unseen things. Happy kiting and stay safe.

Norm's Big Window If you plan to swim a kite over a reef then obviously you should wrap up the lines. If decent waves are breaking on the reef it would be suicide to be near a kite and swim across. But i didn’t see a reef here.😬 My point is that in the time it takes to wrap up the lines you are drifting down wind increasing the swim distance. You have to flag the kite to wrap up the lines properly, so it doesn’t relaunch while winding. If you are swimming a flagged kite in, the lines should be in tension and on the surface with little chance of tangling your legs. If the lines were slack you need to swim harder or you were swimming downwind slower than the kite was drifting. If you are in onshore or side on conditions you could just sit there and let the wind take you in. If you were swimming a kite through surf the last thing i want to be close to is the kite. The point i am making is expecting a beginner or intermediate kiter to self rescue by wrapping lines up poses more danger than just swimming it in and keeping the kite away from yourself. At any moment you can completely release the kite and swim in with your board, alive and skin intact. If you are trying to swim with your board in one hand and the kite in the other it’s not very efficient. Swimming with the board and dragging a flagged kite by the leash is much easier and faster. If you are and expert kiter then you have undoubtedly been in these situations and know what to do. Every situation is different and requires a different approach, but in most situations flag and swim is the best and safest choice and its what i do most of the time. Second is get dragged in by you buddy by his leash. When teaching i always cary a second handle pass leash for this purpose. The current IKO curriculum is dated and obviously isn’t comprehensive enough cover all situations. So a lot is left up to individual instructors some of which are good kiters but maybe not the best teachers. By my experience in teaching and rescuing countless kiters over the years is how i came to this opinion. I also teach many things that the IKO doesn’t based on decades of time on the water sailing, windsurfing, kiting, diving, boating, blah blah blah...... If kiters play by the rules then every situation is manageable. If you play outside of the rules and something goes wrong, you could be in some serious trouble. Fair winds and good swell to you.

@@daversj funny you say that -- I also teach people to evaluate when to wind up lines and when not to wind up lines because in many circumstances I agree that winding lines is more dangerous and offers less advantages ... of course that's not always the case ... sometimes winding lines makes more sense ... but i agree you shouldn't just wind lines by default ... in some cases, maybe most cases, leaving the lines out makes more sense.

In Newfoundland we have an Coast Guard inshore rescue team. In the past 25 years of windsurfing/kiteboarding I've used their services 1/2 dozen times- mostly for broken gear or if the wind died. Very useful!

What Is Islam? Islam is not just another religion. It is the same message preached by Moses, Jesus and Abraham. Islam literally means ‘submission to God’ and it teaches us to have a direct relationship with God. It reminds us that since God created us, no one should be worshipped except God alone. It also teaches that God is nothing like a human being or like anything that we can imagine. The concept of God is summarized in the Quran as: { “Say, He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He does not give birth, nor was He born, and there is nothing like Him.”} (Quran 112:1-4) Becoming a Muslim is not turning your back to Jesus. Rather it’s going back to the original teachings of Jesus and obeying him

We once got the Coast Guard called on us in Chicago. We left my friend to drift in the middle of the lake on a waszp because he didn’t know how to sail it, and somebody in a skyscraper saw us. The coast guard found us as we were towing the boat back to the harbor, and were pretty confused.

We've had them called on us a few times at our local spot. If you get caught far out when the wind dies it's a loooong swim, and bystanders don't always know that we're ok. It's nice to know that people do care though, and that the first response team acts so quickly! :)

I once lost my 7m kite completely in Sheboygan WI because of a broken line. I lost it when I was switching from suicide leash and re-leashing to a safety line because it began looping. My friends called the coast guard and they picked me up with a larger boat in decent 10' swells. I would have been fine anyway though, it was side on wind.. Not sure what the Police or FD could do for y'all :-) Good times!

over the past decade it happened a few times that during self rescue, police show up as bystanders call 911 as they (non kiters) don't know any better. Was it a great day kiting? Yes. Was the police and fire department showing up an overkill? Absolutely. Hence we ran to them trying to call the whole thing off, but once it’s on, it’s on, as they told us
