I've been playing guitar for 45 years. I still like watching your videos. Takes me back. The struggle is real, but it gets easier. Practicing by yourself is important, but in my experience, get some friends to play with. You'll learn way more than you ever could by yourself. Music must be shared to be appreciated properly.

Oh WOW!!!! You sir are an amazing teacher. I am 65 yrs old and have watched and learned more from you than any of the hundreds of other videos out there. You just have a way of explaining things and then showing them that is so easy to do. Again THANK YOU for taking the time out of your life to teach me. Have only been playing less than a year and at one point thought I would never be able to play but since the very first time I watched one of your videos things just started to make sense and come together. 🤣 Hahahaha yes because of that whether you know it or not you are a miracle worker. Please Johnathan keep up doing what you are doing it has helped me believe in myself that maybe I can play the guitar.

Glad you're having so much success with this, Ric. I just discovered this video, and Jonathan, *7 mins. ago,* and really enjoyed it, too. He's got a great big smile that feels pretty genuine, and conveys a kind of warm, comfortable energy that says, _You can do this... no rush... I'm here with you... this is fun, and we've got this._ I'll turn 65 next week, and feel kind of embarrassed to say that I've been teaching myself to play guitar since 1980. (Granted, there have been multiple years at a time when the guitar never came out of its case.) I say "embarrassed" because I haven't been very focused on learning new stuff, and still feel like a beginner... have mostly been content to just strum chords so I could sing some of my favorite old songs. But now we have KZbin to learn from! I just started watching these kinds of videos a couple of months ago, and have probably learned more new techniques in that time than I have in the preceding 30 yrs. (Not that it's so much, it's more that there was so little growth during those the 30 yrs.) Hope that past 5 mos. have been good to you.

@@jkehew1 YOu aremost welcome, Jonathan. Hey, fwiw, I'm going to send you (in Messenger) some information about an event coming up in about three weeks. One reason for doing so is it so happens to be incredibly close to you (just 15 mi.!). While it is not a music event, there are a good number of musicians in attendance, and a talent show on Saturday evening.

I love using that trick to cycle between a minor, a minor, c, and g….. I also use the similar principle of instead of doing a full bar chord, leaving the B and E high strings open to create a richer sound, and keeping those high notes stationary, for example, “no excuses” by Alice In Chains, in fact, Alice In Chains is who inspired me to do a lot of my cords like that, basically just doing a partial bar record while leaving the bottom string open, same principle

@Song Bike - jkehew1 I don't think this is counter-intuitive: when you look down at your own hand and fretboard, visually the fat low E is on the bottom of the arrangement and the higher strings are above it. It's easier to translate a 2d bottom low to hand positioning than it would be a 2d top low configuration, at least for me. Viewing a 3rd person video like this is the opposite, but I'd rather tabs apply to my own playing than the viewing of someone else's

What is an Asus4 called when you add the pinky on the high E string? I'm guessing would still just be called Asus4
@jkehew1
@jkehew1 Жыл бұрын
Great question, RMA! It would be called A7sus4 because the new note on the high is string is G, the flatted seventh note of an A major scale. It's a very cool chord, especially played in this sequence: A7sus4 to A7 to D. Noel Gallagher nicked that trick for Wonderwall I think.
@jimmy2minutes
@jimmy2minutes Жыл бұрын
Well sort of. He doesn't know the names of chords, just plays by what sounds right. Knows the basics but that's it. Once you figure out adding and taking away it's basically " does that work or not?". In fact a turn around might not fit, but if the one after that one does, you are back in business. No rules. Too much of what you expect sounds a bit too obvious. Don't forget Noel steals most things, but then again so did Zeppelin.

Your Em7 tabulation on the screen shows strings 2+3 2nd fret yet your telling and playing different! Your mistake?

Great question, Charles! TAB is counter-intuitive. The top line represents the skinny E string. I didn't invent TAB so I can't take the credit or blame! But once you get past that, it's an incredibly direct way to communicate a wealth of information. Hi Jamie, thanks for your interest in my guitar! It's so flattering to know people really truly watch my videos. I'm sure you wouldn't mind a response to your comment. 1) people make music all over the world with the resources they have, so listen more and judge less. 2) my Martin was made in Nazareth, PA in 1990. 3) I've played guitar since 1985 and taught guitar full-time since 1992. My attitude is that I always have plenty to learn, but c'mon man you sound kinda ignorant.
