The most heartbreaking part of the PTSD episode ociel experienced in this arc is how it shows what O' ciel wouldve been like had he not taken on his brother's identity and fueled by desire for reveng that gives him motivation to be strong . It lets you in into the feelings he suppresses.the guilt,the shame,the feelings of inadequacy and that he shouldnt have survived . It's so heartbreaking to see how weak and broken he really is under all that facade of coldness and strength

My favourite part about this arc is that when I found out about it I was just thinking “why does ciel have to go to germany?? did she not have anyone else she could send??” and then I decided to just not question it since this manga is about a demon butler and most of these cases feel like they shouldn’t be being handled by a child

The dream sequence is my absolute favorite part of the manga when it comes to ciel’s character. I could gush about it for hours. I know it’s a PTSD episode, but it really lets us see what hides deep down in ciel’s heart. Aka, despite his huge ego in the manga, he feels worthless deep down, especially in comparison to his brother. He carries immense guilt over being the one to survive instead of Ciel, the one he grew up hearing was better than him and more appreciated. In the dream, Ciel reassured him “silly, you didn’t have to do this for us, nobody asked you to”. And he’s right. That’s not the actual reason ciel did all of this. The reason he made the contract was because he wanted to become someone greater than himself. [paraphrased] “I’m not so noble that I’d sacrifice myself for others, nor so weak that I’d get pushed around by others. I’m selfish, the reason I made this contract. I did it for ME”. He was given a second chance at life; to be a ‘Ciel’ in the world, not merely the spare, not weak and powerless, and he took it. (This might be a bit different from your read) My boy spent these past three years trying to be ruthless and strong, and he’s succeeded, he’s become greater than himself. After real ciel’s return, we see him fall back into how he used to be: he’s silent and submissive in the presence of real ciel. (Here comes my second favorite scene when it comes to his character). In Lau’s den, during the dinner scene, Ciel snapped and goes batshit on the food, remembering who he is. “How dare he? I’m the one whose done all this work these past years. I am not ciel, but The name ciel phantomhive belongs to ME”. This is absolutely beautiful. He acknowledges he is not his brother, but neither is he the weak spare he used to be. He has become someone greater. Yes, not his brother, but his own person. I fucking love ciels development from childhood until now. The way he stood up for himself when it comes to his mistreatment by others, having the self esteem to oppose his brother and get back what’s his. Even ciel acknowledges this change “finally we can have a sibling rivalry”. And another note, in my opinion, I think a lot of the ways ciel has been acting throughout the series have been the way he thinks real ciel might’ve acted in those situations. But when real ciel comes back, it’s strikingly clear how much he failed in imitating ciel. Ciel is so charming and outgoing, and socially aware/in control ex: when he’s talking to Lizzys parents, when he talks down to our ciel, when he’s reconnecting with lizzy. His cruelty is also very present, ex: his mocking nature towards our ciel, the way he treats servants and lizzy, destroying ciels toy samples. Our ciel’s kind and more introverted nature cannot be suppressed .

Somehow I doubt that real ciel would have acted that way if he were to survive. I think there might have been built up anger for being impersonated for 3 years and that whole not having a soul thing. Real Ciels character could have simply be guessed by Undertaker.

But if you look back at scenes of RCiel as a child, he acted very odd at times. He was somewhat obsessive or possessive of OCiel, which is why you wonder why he'd be so cruel to him after he came back. I think it's all some sort of elaborate plan. If Rciel's greatest desire before dying was to escape with ociel and be together forever, I think his plan is to Isolate ociel and make him lose everything so he will only be dependent on rciel. He already made him lose his status and his family. He's probably going for sebastian next. Now this could be interpreted as a crack theory, but as for a shared goal between undertaker and rciel, I think their plan is to place ociels soul into rciels. That way Undertaker has a 'whole' phantomhive with a body and soul while rciel gets to be with his little brother forever (creepy) but it also parallels what happened in the anime, and many people have noticed that some aspects of the noncanon parts of season 1/2 have shown up later in the manga.

One notable corrsction: Back in the carriage ride when Ciel opened his mouth to speak but then closed it back up, he had actually wanted to ask Sebastian whether the cultists' ritual 3 years ago had been right, or if Sebastian had been summoned by actual accident. He then realised that it did not matter. (The last sentence was said by Yana herself).

I always refer to older brothers Ciel as "Lord Sirus" since it's the closest thing to canon and Ciel as Ciel. Also i always had a head cannon thay Finn was his favorite servant seeing how Ciel literally rescued him while Sebastian was about to kill him, also Sebastian calls him a straight "Idiot" while he reframes to call Mey-Rin and Baldroy. Lastly Ciel used "Finn" as an alias in the circus arc. Coincidence I (personally) THINK NOT!!

Can confirm that German pronunciation is incredibly hard (English is my first language, with learning Mandarin Chinese as a work in progress). I've been binging these deep dives the last few days, and I love every minute of each video. I'm so happy to find KZbinrs obsessed with Black Butler; I got into the series around 2018 when I was in high school but I never really found any other hyper-fixating fans (my mom was subjected to many a long ramblings). As of writing this, the public school arc anime is currently coming out week by week. I love it, the animators are absolutely flexing their skills, and I hope that the emerald witch arc eventually gets animated.

As of now, the Emerald green witch is my favourite arc. I reread it once in a while. I just really like the setting of the story. We have our whole family together. It’s nice we get to see everyone and they each have their moment in the story. We get the typical old storybook setting of a Village in a forest nice add that it’s happening in Germany. We get rumors about curses, werewolves and witches. And the build up to the ”curse” scene and what happens after is so suspenseful 4:11 🇫🇮 we are unstoppably loud when we get any attention. This is big. Thanks Yana :D 37:24 This scene always breaks me as well. Both expressions are just so full of raw emotion. The way Yana shows characters expressions sometimes is just so powerful to me. To Finny, Ciel is he’s savior and the reason he esentially has a life so seeing Ciel in that condition breaks him. From my own experience I can tell how hard it is to see someone who has helped you, hurt or feel that the things they do are not enough or that they don’t deserve good in life. I do wonder if we get more of Finny’s backstory. I mean we got a whole arc for Mey-Rin and Baldroy. We got a small glimpse of Finny’s story in this arc, but I wonder if we get more? I guess we have been show’n the most important parts, but I believe there is still more to know. It’s interesting we finally get to go deep in Ciel’s inner feelings and his survival’s guilt. The poison was a triggering factor for his ptsd to act out and it fitted well to the story. I didn’t first get the twin forshadowing when this arc was going and I guess it was because of my younger age and english not being my native language. But yes, it is so clear when looking at it now that it didn’t come out of nowhere and without real planning. There is so much more in this arc that really makes it my favourite. The setting, new characters and their stories, the great exciting action scenes and character moments. The arcs phasing and the themes are done well. I and many more are so happy that you are covering these arcs and the manga. You have such a clear way of explaining the story and the characters and you go deeper than the surface level which I really appreciate because normal recap videos are everywhere and they don’t usually do much else. You also make your videos so enjoyable to watch. I love psychological and thought provoking themes and ideas in storytelling. So big thanks to you and sorry for anyone who actually red all of this

Sometimes I see Sebastian's evil and twisted moments and I get judgmental, but then I remember he's supposed to behave like that. His species works like that, and not only his species. Sebastian kills for food. Even if it's the soul he consumes or the people he kills because he's ordered to. The human nature is not very different. We eat meat, and if we don't, insects will be killed so we can eat our vegetables. That might be an unpopular opinion, but I think Sebastian is similar to us in some ways. P.S. Please talk about the Devil Six chapter, where Grell literally talks about wanting to transition, yet it's not obvious enough for the mangrellers...

I liked this arc a lot, although it's not my absolute favorite. Amazing deep dive, by the way! I also personally suspect there's more to the Queen than it meets the eye. Although I wasn't happy initially with how the twin reveal eventually progressed (with RC being "revived"), the manga has been painfully slow for the last few years. I hope it will be worth it, though. Edit: To add, I'm one of those people who isn't a fan of the sexual jokes, especially towards our Ciel, even more after the whole past. I like Sieglinde, but was the threesome part necessary Yana?? 😭

Anyways Prediction, after watching this video I wonder if there’ll ever be a ritual that’ll require a Demon as a sacrifice for something in the series. Perhaps to restore what was lost. A bizzaro Ciel doll or bizzaro Ciel’s father. Maybe Undertaker Reaped some of the Phantomhive family souls just to keep for later. Soul + Body. I once heard that the three critical parts to a person is the Soul, Body and Mind. But where to find the mind? Assuming they’ll go by that format, I wonder.

The point of Ciel viewing Seb as a beast is super interesting because beasts (re: animals) operate on instinct. They don't have human levels of conscience, calculation, etc. and such a view shows how apt Ciel is to forget how smart/clevel/strategic/etc. Sebastian really is

asdfsadfa the 30 year old comment was more so me saying I'd like to tackle it SOON (I'm turning 27 this year for context) I LOVE all your comments about the real world history here, it's so fascinating! A lot of the fanfic I write never actually gets finished enough to post in the internet asdfasdf. I enjoy writing, but it's not something I tend to spend a lot of time on.

K so like four things one what do you think us the worst arc of black butler two is there a chance even a slim one alois could become canon three what do you personally find to be the best place to get the entire manga series and four is the manga over or on going

I honestly don't know if Yana Toboso has the rights to include Alois in the manga beyond a cameo. I don't think Alois will ever be canon. Honestly, I don't think any of the arcs are BAD, but my least favorite would have to be book of murder? I know you can purchase digital copies of the manga and the individual chapters as they come out on amazon kindle and from Yen Press directly if you're in the US. Otherwise, just collecting physical copies and finding places to read scans online. I've been caught up for a while and have friends who share the chapters with me as they come out. The manga is not over yet, it just looks like it's nearing the final stages!

Much as I (mostly) hate to spoil anyone's fanfic dreams but can we all just remember that Sebastian intentionally modeled his human form to resemble Vincent to further endear Ciel to him? So theres an added borderline incest vibe there which.....idk, for some fanfic writers, that might make it better, idk 😆

Eh, from my understanding this idea is more of a fandom misconception. It came from Yana stating there was a reason Vicent and Sebastian looked similar, later revealing said reason was just her tendency to draw handsome man in a similar manner
