I love all of the innovative thinking that is resulting in so many different approaches to VTOL electric flight. It reminds me a lot of the Cambrian period of Earth 538 million years ago when there was a massive radiation, often referred to as the "Cambrian Explosion", of multicellular life forms into many different and sometimes bizarre body configurations (phyla) (check out Hallucigenia and Opabinia). Eventually the most successful body forms came to dominate and those which couldn't compete died out. The same evolutionary process will happen with eVTOL as the very different formats (single/multi/many fixed rotor, tilt rotor, lift+cruise, tilt wing, tilt flap, etc.) actually come into service and begin to compete against each other first to find that all important first customer (this is likely to weed out the weaker contenders) and then in service for enough customers to be economically viable. We could see one single format dominate and all other formats disappear, or two or more types might persist for a long time with the different types having different strengths and weakness that allow them to succeed in different niches of the overall market. The "fitness" criteria determining winners and losers in the evolution of eVTOL is likely to be cost per seat-km which will be a major factor in ticket prices. Maybe the relative simplicity of the eHang type might come to dominate the very short range skyscraper to skyscraper hoping in cities with massive urban cores like NYC, and many of the cities in China, or cities where ground transportation is so congested, like Delhi. And maybe one of the lift-cruise configurations will come to dominate the cross-urban and city edge to city core market. And perhaps configurations like the tilt open rotor like the Joby or the tilt ducted rotor like the Lilium with their claimed 250 km range will be able to overcome their likely higher initial cost to make one or more of them superior for regional travel out to 250-300 km. A 250-300 km range would connect city-pairs like the 130 km between Philadelphia and New York City out to the 300 km between NYC and Boston, and London and Paris, and Shanghai and all of the cities surrounding it out as far as Wuhu. Thanks so much for your great videos.

Thank you for this extensive report. Would be nice if you could add the names in your introduction of the names of the manufacturers. I was quite impressed with the Pantuo concept as it addresses the elephant in the room of drones, the chopping blades.
The Chinese authorities overseeing civilian aviation, rescue, search and fire fighting are not up to spped in adopting new technologies including eVTOL or smaller fixed wing and rotor crafts. Low-alotitude airspace deregulation has been discussed and hyped for so long, but hardly any progress has been made. This has been dampening the growth of the market, if there was a meaningful market at all.
@martingarrish40822 жыл бұрын
I like the E430 fixed wing design, although V-tails can be a red herring. To get the same short period oscillation time and damping as a horizontal stabiliser you normally end up with the same wetted area (boundary layer drag). I'd have to draw a vector diagram, showing how flow impinging on an angled aerofoil reduces the dCL/dAOA to explain. But upshot is there is no real advantage for V-tail. Honestly though I just do not understand the e-VTOL aversion to collective pitch rotor systems. Especially the multi-rotor systems that have similar overall planform dimensions to a rotor design. Can someone explain the logic to me? It just does not make any sense.

Why not use hard wire during take off to reduce battery demand by 25%, plus use of hydrogen containers under the batteries to reduce the weight of the batteries by keeping them afloat and for safety reason on a tow arrangement attached to airplane

That's weird it sure looks like a Boeing 737-300 400 but I'm sure that is just a coincidence. It's not like they hacked into and stole that intellectual property.
@ElectricAviation2 жыл бұрын
It is a narrow body airliner. While there are other narrow body airliners too, like the A320 etc, but what caught my eye was the engine and the same flat bottom surface of the Engine Nacelle as the 737. Other than that I dont think they stole intellectual property.

Sadly insurance is likely to be very expensive becase all these designs are extremely dangerous and are likely to have industry restructured fatalities. The faa needs to reqire all props to be inclosed so they can run into another bird or evtol. Rapid bolistic parachute should be required on all evtols in the event of full power failure. And I think designs realy should land flat to ground so wheelchair can roll on from parking spot on street on inclement weather.

I’m not a fan of exposed propellers, although the TF-X might be an exception since it’s also a flying car. My preference for a strictly aerial vehicle would be the Jetoptera or the Lilium jet.
@TeslaBulldotcom Жыл бұрын
Hi, any chance you could take a look at sky fly for us, concept simplicity looks great, could this be scaled? Into say a 5 seater, it’s expensive! What’s to stop the Chinese copying the design and turning them out at half the price or less. 👍 big fan of your work by the way
@ElectricAviation Жыл бұрын
I did mention Skyfly in the video I did in January. They have successfully tested a small scale model. I would be more comfortable if they dont have just tip rotors. The reason is if one tip rotor fails its very difficult to control the aircraft. Chinese companies have already copied several designs. This might be copied too.

I don't understand why these aircraft have to be completely electric. If they had an internal combustion generator instead of a Lithium ion battery then they could easily double the feeble, half-hour flight time.

Most eVTOL designs fall into four categories: Multicopter, Lift+Cruise, Tiltrotor, and Tilting. All designs in each category look similar anyway.

China is unable to create an original design for ANYTHING on their own.
@ElectricAviation2 жыл бұрын
Well by the same token, Jetson One would be a knock off version of Ehang 184 and the Xpeng X2, which have been around for over 8 years. But I agree, some of the Chinese ones are really similar. The Pantuo is almost a complete Lilium knock off
@jensensean71182 жыл бұрын
@@ElectricAviation Why not copy from and improve on one design which is the most promising? Lilium is beautiful and efficient. No need to meke an angular wheel for originality's sake.
