I shouldn’t have been surprised by the non-ending. I’m so tired making the emotional and time investment in these sci-fi shorts, just to be left hanging again and again. That’s fine for the occasional exception, but when it becomes routine, it’s increasingly frustrating and comes across as a lazy way to make a story seem profound.

Finally a set that doesn't look like the control room of a luxury cruse liner. Ms.Chavez performance was outstanding and subtle when appropriate. Her reaction to the shaking of the ship felt real. The ending left many questions open, but isn't that the point of good SF, to provoke more questions than answers, to stimulate the imagination? I would love to see a continuation of the story. Well done and regards- Dave

@dgwachtel however, near the year 2300 as the story is supposed; the tech would be advanced to go to that planet and the ship should have some characteristics of a modern design; nothing of that here but very very possible due to the lack of a better budget.

They write a story and can't come up with endings so they leave it to the audience to finish their project. Intentional or not, the mission of the main character to connect with the barely known and the mission of this film to connect with a barely known viewer is intriguing. Back in 1962, published in his book, Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, the Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan coined the expression, "The medium is the message". I’d suggest that McLuhan’s ideas have journeyed well, withstood the test of time, and are embedded in this, short, well done production.
@Action_Tan5 жыл бұрын
I love your take on this, Walter, thanks!

I appreciate the McLuhan reference. He is possibly the most important mind of our times re our media and is still relevant. (I am proud to be Canadian for so many reasons...) :)
@UncleWally35 жыл бұрын
Axe Guy: One of the indicators of a worthwhile production is the conversation it sparks, eh? I’m not sure if I overreached when I suggested the medium being the message may be the point of the plot, but I still think the idea is in there somewhere. That the mission is one of contrition, in the hope of finding redemption, and that it’s a solo mission is pretty powerful. I’m not sure what McLuhan would say about it; to find that out may require a journey for another time . . .
@axeguy38565 жыл бұрын
Walter Wilkins You are so right! Smart as any of us may be, the depth of knowledge, experience, and discourse on Dust is very high and adds to all of our understanding of these pieces: I can sometimes appreciate the comments more than I appreciate the actual piece being discussed. E Flanagan It wasn't too bad but coupled with the slight flex in the floor it distracted me thinking of how it might have been constructed. Just take me with a grain of salt: I was kind of a trained observer and I get distracted by a lot of things like bird song, foliage, etc., as my mind races to identify defensible positions, food sources, regions, and proximity to coastlines, etc., but also the little clues to the location of adversaries, who is concealing weapons, who's body language and others' behaviors mark out the 'alphas', number and locations of exits, and jump scares… I try to keep it in check but my sons call me 'Spoiler Alert'. It's not a game for me; it's just the nature of things I've had to do or training. Often, it's a measure of how absorbed I am or imagining being there and what will help the character survive. I know that might sound a little wierd but I'll care about characters or feel almost like I'm there. Complete immersion, I guess. I imagine all of us do this to some degree, as I've heard people even talk about 'falling in love' with characters. :)

antiami Hahahahaha!! I'm up late into the wee hours just listening to the forest-smelling the Spring come. Feels like a long time ago...and The President was a charming actor, ex-Hollywood... I was trained as an infantry officer then cross-trained as kind of a logistics officer of sorts. Imagine that you had to get a group of 'tourists' from point A to B in unfamiliar surroundings; okay? As well, these people had to move quickly, quietly, unnoticed and with minimal gear. Any terrain, perhaps even populated areas. No electronics. No paperwork. Perhaps, the best way would be to have a 'tour guide'; you know? Or maybe you just need a guy to sit in a location-that not even he knows-to stare at something curious for a few days? Well, I thought I was good. Turns out that sometimes it doesn't matter and-despite best efforts-you end up in a pooch-screw between two big dogs. Fast forward and your 'tour guide' keeps to himself still stuck a bit in the past. I'm just a regular guy with a bizarre resumé and fixated on worst case scenarios-just trying to stay 'left of bang'. The exact same story could have been produced without all the CGI gimmickry. An ancient sheepherder wandering through the desert looking for the meaning of purposeful living and not encountering anyone or anything would be the same thing... oh, wait... that story has already been told. Guess this film is an upgrade to that but, still just as unfulfilling.

Gotta love the space ships control yoke and radio gear. Looks like inside of a WW2 bomber. This is meant to be 23rd century but at least there was no story.

There's gravity inside the ship, very interesting! 100 light years from Earth, in a lifetime, it means travel at a speed greather that the speed of light!

If the door had opened and shown us who was there, well...we would have to go on to a 2-hour movie or a series. This was the perfect break. She and the humans back on Earth wanted to reestablish a connection. And she wanted to start by saying she was sorry. Use your imagination. I think the people back home wanted to ask for help.

This was an excellent short even if the ending was less than ideal for me. The door merely opening leaves too many questions. Just showing someone on the other side would have been more satisfactory in my view. There wouldn't have to be dialog. Their body language would tell you a lot as well as whether or not they had a weapon drawn.

I very much liked your short film! Well done and thought provoking! Beginning to End! You made us use our own imagination and ending we would prefer! Thumbs Up!

Damn -- I did enjoy that and found it quite thought-provoking, like the better contemplative sci-fi from the sixties and the seventies. But I really wanted another few seconds. Or a sequel ;)

13:39 OMG those are my missing scissors! THAT'S why I can't find them: they are orbiting a planet a hundred light years away! Damn but they were good scissors...
