And it's Zhu QiZhen who lost to Oirats in the famous Tumu Battle(1449). In Zhu Di's era, Ming is still in its military highlight and got many victory against Mongols and Oirats. A long life is a word which relies on the perspective of the masses which at that time, wasn't very long at all. Like a contract, it's always safer to set a time frame as it is less likely to be broken during the set period of time. A lot of Chinese dramas seems to paint a picture of Chinese armies being smaller than the barbarians even though China from a historical perspective are far more populous than nomadic tribal kingdoms/states. Ming Dynasty will always be the greatest dynasty in Chinese history. It did not prostitute princesses (ehem Han, Tang).
