What really annoys me about TCW when disney canon didn't exist is they had that episode with Cad Bane where he was kidnapping force sensitive children for Palpatine and that could have been an excellent hint at Mara Jade's origin as she would be the right age to be one of the Acoylytes Palpatine was talking about, but of course the Jedi needed to prevail and they foiled Palpatine's plans. What a waste.

4:21 Not much is hotter than a tan redhead. Edit, wait, her primary role as Hamd was to stamp out Imperial corruption? She’s gotta big job, then - one of the biggest in the galaxy. Was it The Crimson Empire story where she fulfilled Sidious’ final command by killing the Sabaoth clone of Luke? That was a slick piece of storytelling. I’d have liked a story of Vader taking her down a notch, and I never really bought into her marrying Luke - she was WAY too much for the farm boy. Although Legends Luke isn’t so much of a boy scout. Still.

My personal Expanded Universe timeline ends at 15:40 the stories after (the "Troy Denning era") derailed all the character growth by basically ignoring the last 10 New Jedi Order books. Then Karen Traviss derailed all of Mara Jade's growth of her last 30 years to set her up going out of character so she could basically make her Mace Windu and repeat the Mace vs Palpatine fight but replace Anakin Skywalker appearing with a plot Mcguffin poison needle. They basically hinted that Mara Jade was in hell or at the minimum purgatory after trying to murder Jacen after that too... it was a complete misunderstanding of everything Mara Jade Skywalker was as a character and all her growth as a character. It's like they only read her backstory on wookieepedia up to the beginning of Heir to the Empire and thought she was still that character and utterly ignored her character in the Hand of Thrawn duology and Survivors Quest where she regretted her past and refused to be that woman anymore If Mara was to be killed off, they should have had the one writer who truly understood her character, Timothy Zahn, do it... and James Luciano should have been the one writing Jacen Solo to explain his massive character derailment to go darkside randomly after all his growth past his old fears that now he randomly hasn't grown past anymore. Jacen is still a hero, Tahiri Veila moved past Anakin Solo's death, Mara Jade Skywalker earned her Jedi Master title and didn't choose to go back to her assassin days randomly, Luke Skywalker wasn't an idiot who didn't notice Jacen Solo falling and think it was impossible, etc...

Mara was 100% dead after Jacen killed her, she didn't know how to become a force ghost, that's why her body didn't vanish at first it did later but I don't think it's a proof of Mara becomming a force ghost, rather some kind of ritual. Her manifestation appeared to Luke and Ben in FOTJ, but I belive it was just that, her memory used by the Whills to comunicate with Luke and Ben and help to defeat Abeloth. Same thing with Anakin Solo and Jacen. They were all fully dead and while I belive something remained from her consciousness in the netherworld, as with everyone else, including non force sensitives like Jango or Padme, she deffinitely wasn't able to comunicate with the living. As for Cade having a vision of her, that was it, just a vision just like a vision of vader he also had and that was confirmed.

I've always disagreed with the Idea of bringing EU characters into the new canon. They could bring Mara into the new canon but she wouldn't be the same Mara Jade, just an off brand knock off with the same name and vague appearance. I would much rather have Legends continued as an alternate - equally valid time line that way we could have more stories about the *real* Mara Jade, not the mickey mouse version.

Do you have any recommendations for any SW Dark Horse comics set in the Rebellion era?

Well, she did never really served the dark actively cuz she was manipulated into the conviction to serve justice n in her ddirect capacity n inside the knowledge she had of her targets n the reasons, she really has been. In terms of her method to use the force, she also was a light sider. Tho' her temper wasn't discouraged, she still wasn't trained to use it as her method to channel the force. Further her anger was seperate from her professional mindset n had nothing to do with hate cuz her use of the force as tool for her job was not personal n she wouldn't allow her judgement to be clouded, leading to really investigate the claims n search those who r guilty n also declair her targets not guilty if she was sure they r. She was by no means just an assassin. Also did we get the confirmation of her not being a dark sider from when she discusses the issue with luke, as well as from vader's statement of her only having some jedi training. I think it's unlikely that it included much philosophy of'em, only practical techniques to use her talent. Her phase after palps' death was actually the first time when she was driven by hate that was personal n her rational based clearly on a selfish perspective. All she blamed luke for was fueled by selfpity n nothing else. She didn't even tried to see anything bad or evil in him to justify her desire to kill him for herself. She was fully ok with hating him 4 her fate of which he had no way to knowor to regard it in his actions eitherway, what she was fully aware. Neither had the order to kill him any meaning exept to hopefully get rid of it. She wasn't compelled by it, it instead turned into another part of her selfish reasons. From her mindset this was the only time we know of her life, that she really would've fallen in theory, but it also was when she was mostly avoiding to channel the force at all, which prolly safed her from really going dark. The 2nd time is of course just after she gave jacen a last warning n told him to b aware of his embrace of the dark side n purposful decision to become a sith. From there she must've known to make herself a target. She not just prepaired herself to a confrontation but all butt drove him into it. Once he didn't bite she went to literally "hunt down n kill him" n welcommed her anger that now was as personal as it can get. Yet even that was not out of a selfish motive, not even latent but pure motherly instinct to protect her child. Besides his influence on ben, nothing of jacens crimes would've been enough to keep her handling the situation that way n it is therefore still a mindset for a forceuser that seems to b really "grey". Her drawing on that hate for the force would've been just as much a practicality without the philosophical underpinnings of the dark side as her "jedi" training was regarding the light side n her personal decision for either path. By knowing n accepting to went into her death if she fails, it was even not unlike the way kenobi refused to keep fighting vader. Tho' she accepted her probable end as a base for a radically different course of action, it was still that decision of forfitting her life for what she believed her best possible chance to protect ben. It's self sacrifice for the sake of others, which is as much a light side thing as it can b and absolutely fundamental in the jedi principles. The exploitation of a corrupting way to use the force, knowing she won't b able to corrupt others anyway n had no goal that included harm to others while bennefiting her not at all, is likely a smaller danger to fall further if she made it, than stuff countless jedi do only after needing to lie to themself or ignore their motives which makes the actual danger. Since it remains a decision at all time no matter how far fallen, so with the certainty to have no selfish reasons at the core to drive ur actions there is no desire to fear 4 the power that seemingly waits, cuz it isn't needed outside that final fight she faced. She either succeeds n is done or fails n is dead.
