NIAGARA FALLS -
Niagara Falls Fire and Emergency Services were dispatched to the corner of Park St. and Erie Ave (Also known historically as THE EMPIRE BUILDING0 for reports of smoke in the area at 7:45pm January 1st, 2025.
Crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the structure on the south east corner of the intersection of Park St. and Erie Ave.
Crews noticed heavy fire conditions and worked a defensive fire attack strategy.
Two aerial trucks were set up for master streams dumping water onto the building after fire ripped through the roof.
Several hand lines and ground monitors were set up pouring water into the structure from a distance, as they had to stay a distance back outside of the collapse zone.
At one point, the second floor collapsed inside the building onto the first floor.
Crews have been on scene now for several hours and will be battling this blaze for some time more as they cannot get to the hot spots as it is not safe to enter the structure due to collapse.
No injuries were reported.
The Ontario Fire Marshals office was notified and will be responding to the scene, not sure if that will be tonight or in the morning.
City of Niagara Falls Fire Inspectors will also be working on the investigation.

With all that water being poured in there you wouldn't think there could be anything dry enough to burn. Veracity of fire huh. Great job firefighters and awesome video

You have to actually put the water on what's burning. You can't just throw it in it's direction.

I'm guessing there wasn't much investigation done. Abandoned building that was in serious decline, and what was left was torn down the next day. Nobody cares.

I have not heard officially, and we may never know, the structure was way to unsafe to enter to do fire inspection as far as I could tell. Thank you for the compliment on the video, we always add up to date video when we can of events that we attend and record. be sure to follow us if you dont already and turn on the notifications to be the first to see our videos.

When the fire department arrived on scene, the fire was venting through the roof. They were instructed to stay out of the collapse zone as one of the walls was unstable on the second floor. Crews could not safely get to the main entrances or boarded up windows to open it up to direct water into the structure. They had to wait till the fire burned through the boarded up windows and doors before they could apply agent.

@@905drone3 SERIOUSLY?? The video initially didn't show any glow coming from the roof. The windows on the upper floors could have been easily vented from the tower ladder basket. That's what it's there for, not just for applying water.

They had a Tower Ladder in front of the building that could have easily opened the window coverings on the 2nd floor with two men in the basket. Where was the 1st floor windows boarded up? Later on in the video you can see handlines operating into the first floor, but no windows were previously taken. Initially, video showed smoke issuing from the roof eaves but fire showing from a first floor doorway. A member could have easily taken that with a 10 ft. hook for an appliance, even the tower ladder basket to apply water from outside the collapse zone from street level. This was a poorly executed, poorly supervised operation that could have had better results of proper use of manpower would have positioned handlines or portable appliances earlier on in the operation. . . . . Just the opinion of a downstate fire officer.

I've never seen a ladder come out from the ground and water come out of it. Looks like a bong fire on the back of the building.

I understand the standoff zone due to potential collapse, but I do not understand the failure to open up more of those windows to alleviate potential explosive situations.
@demetriuswebb5692
@demetriuswebb5692 Ай бұрын
It's called the collapse zone.. and opening up windows only introduce more air into the structure. Some fire departments do this and other do not. When you introduce air into a fire actually feeds the fire. You have to read certain conditions such as the color of the smoke, if smoke is puffing from the eves,wind conditions, water supply and enough manpower to effect a massive fire attack. On TV they break out windows and other things for theater effects. You just don't go around breaking out windows. Usually vertical ventilation allows the smoke and hot gasses to lift up allowing firefighter to see the fire.

@@demetriuswebb5692 except if your FDNY! They like to break all the windows!
@RabbahDocRona
@RabbahDocRona Ай бұрын
@demetriuswebb5692 I'm well aware of the collapse zone and I believe I mentioned it. I know that horizontal ventilation will feed the fire, but what you do not want is to have explosive smoke (which is a thing) conditions and have the windows self ventilate, because then things go really bad in a hurry. Controlled horizontal ventilation with blitzes pre-staged is the best way to avoid this
