I think the sin at the root of all this is that Lucas forgot how he had Obi-Wan describe Anakin. That, and that for a tragic villain's descent to work, you should generally begin with worthy Macbeth or brave Washizu and then go downhill.

i just assumed it was a result of being ‘professionally’ accomplished but emotionally stunted due to having to be queen while still a child and then senator right after. an extremely sheltered life relationships-wise while simultaneously being formidable in other spheres does make you make weird emotional choices. most people don’t understand this because most people think the accomplishments are harder to achieve so if you have those surely you’re mature and would not make bad relationship choices. but no. there are a minority of people who find the accomplishments easy and relationships really hard. i should know.

What helped the Original Trilogy was he had help from Irvine Kershner. True to character. It works for me in that sense. Overall, I like how each trilogy's central romance has a different flavor. Han and Leia were the classic bickering sexual tension. The galaxy's a mess! Of course a princess and a smuggler can fall in love! Anakin and Padme were the more old-fashioned star-crossed lovers. The galaxy is too rigid! Of course it would stand against a Jedi and a Senator falling in love, yes, despite BOTH being in the upper echelons of galactic society! Kylo and Rey, although my least favorite of the set, do represent the more modern trend of favoring dark, edgy bad boys. The FORCE is in such a mess, of course it would stand against a Skywalker(Solo) and a mysterious anomaly(Palpatine) from being together! And while yes, ALL of these moulds are as old as dirt, I think they all correspond well to what's in vogue and what's best for the story each trilogy is trying to tell.

Hmm... actually, I have a problem with the writing even in the Han-Leia love story from Empire. It's really only the genuine chemistry between the leads (and the real-life friendship that chemistry comes from) that makes it work. It's incredibly, "Yes, I know your lips say no, but your eyes say yes," rapey on Han's part, especially the bit leading up to their first kiss

To which she replies, "I happen to like nice men." She keeps verbally contradicting him or rejecting what he says. And it continues right up until the moment they kiss: Han: "I'm a nice man." Leia: "No, you're not." Read the dialogue without looking at the body language. Her lips are very much saying no. That is why we have such issues on the internet and over email. Body language and inflection of HOW you say what you say are more important and both of those clearly didn't agree with what she was saying. It does change the scene and rightfully so. Now, you could argue that they shouldn't have had her saying that when she obviously didn't agree, but thats a culture thing (remember, its been almost 40 years since that movie came out) and our culture has changed a lot since it came out.

5:02 That. That right there. You just nailed every single problem with the prequels. “All tell and no show”. Irvin Kirshner knew that an audience could make intuitive leaps and understand subtext. GL does not, and the Prequels are full of insults to the audiences intelligence. GL apparently feels like we’re all drooling idiots who have to be spoon fed through a movie. Thus why, in the Not So Special Editions, George feels like he has to add a scene of Vader parking his shuttle and disembarking onto Executor in the middle of a climactic chase from Cloud City disrupting the timing and destroying the climax. 😤

As an aside, I would’ve loved to see a big part of Anakin/Obiwan’s fight in ROTS be fueled by jealousy over a love triangle, even just a perceived one on Anakin’s part. The tension you mentioned between Obi and Padme could definitely have been capitalized on for fight fuel.

Trish of the Lessons from the Screenplay team makes a good point on the subtext front: there is NO subtext to Anakin and Padme's romance. All they talk about is how they're in love, but they can't be in love because their love is forbidden, but they don't care, however forbidden it may be...

I like the theory that Anakin uses the force to manipulate Padme into falling in love with him. That totally fixes this problem of her falling for him in spite of his creepy behavour. Admittedly Padme is always shown to be strong willed, so it doesn't mesh with force suggestion only working on the weak minded (but then again, Anakin spends an awful lot of time around her, including when she's sleeping, dreaming... maybe Star Wars is in a shared universe with Inception!)

Actually there's a theory that makes Anakin and Padme's lack of chemistry and Anakin's overall creepiness make much more sense, which improves all the bad bits in their love story. The theory goes that Padme wasn't that into him but Anakin couldn't handle any more rejection so he subconsciously was manipulating her with the force. Padme brushes him off as the little boy she knew 10 years ago who was sweet and immature, and is now kinda hot but it'd be weird and inappropriate. Then Anakin starts sending red flags via crappy dialogue and she shuts down, covers the cameras, says stop it you're being creepy. Then on the way to Naboo he's trying to be on better behavior and explains his situation and slowly we see her letting down her guard. While she's smart enough to not be fooled outright "these aren't the droids you're looking for" style, coming from what was set up as the most powerful force user ever subtle influence can make it through once she's more comfortable. Then on Naboo she rejects him repeatedly and he keeps working on lowering her walls and influencing her via force to find his dialogue less creepy more endearing. Then Tattooine happens. Anakin loses control for the first time, but in a very sympathetic way. Rather than be repulsed or scared for her life calling Windu because she's on a strange planet with a genocidal maniac we see her comfort him. Anakin, subconsciously, through the force is demanding comfort, and Padme is unable to resist because Anakin is incapable of controlling it. From then on we see it harder and harder for Padme to disagree with Anakin at all. "Wanna completely disobey orders and probably die saving Obi-Wan?" Sure. "Wanna secretly get married even though that'll get us both fired if not worse?" Sure. "Mind if I get super jealous and almost kill your friend?" What? No! "Are you sure you won't forgive me?" Oh okay, you didn't really mean it. (That happened in Clone Wars) "Wanna rule the galaxy with me after I murder my boss?" Dude you just murdered a room full of children I'm only here to say I'm no longer under your control, you're breaking my heart. Anakin loses control again, over does it and she dies. This is not to say that Anakin was intentionally manipulating Padme, at least at first and there's definite debate on if it was intentional at all, but if you read their interactions through that lens everything from the repeated red flags, to the bad romantic dialogue, to the lack of on screen chemistry between two incredible actors (Natalie Portman was in her mid to late 20s at that point so at least 10 years in the business and a natural) to Padme's highly questionable and out of character decisions to marry and stay with an unstable super powerful jedi who murdered an entire village and also flew into a jealous rage and tried to beat her friend to death just make a lot more sense. Omg sorry for how long this essay turned out.

Jill, thank you for one of the best explanation I have heard about how good film romances work and why The prequels romance did not. Anakin was definitely too dark/ creepy too soon in the movie and there is no obvious indication that Padme is or should be attracted to him. The only thing I would add is that some are too critical of Anakin. It is his first romantic adventure so of course he is dorky or awkward in his romantic overtures e.g. the sand talk. I also like how he tries to impress her with his powers by “feeding” her apples. Yes they are silly, but I suspect many of us were as bad!

Head Canon: Obi-Wan, Anakin and Padme were in a 3-way polyamorous relationship ... But because of The Living Force looking naturally balance itself, it chose to let Obi-Wan to impregnate Padme ... So actually the 2nd generation of Skywalkers we see are actually Obi-Wan's kids, so when Old Ben tells Luke that Vader killed his father (and Yoda comments that Obi-Wan "told Luke the truth from a certain perspective") is all down to the use of past-tense to describe a vision of the future (i.e. Vader cutting Obi-Wan down on the Death Star)! This also handily explains why Obi-Wan has more chemistry with young Vader/Anakin and with Padme, but Anakin and Padme have none ... because Obi-Wan was what made that poly-am triangle function!

i always thought that Anakin and padmé isn't technically a love story...i think its like magically induced Stockholm syndrome. i think Anakin did actually love padmé (or at least the idea of the gorgeous space queen who helped liberate him from slavery and helped him find the jedi path), but she didn't feel the same way until spending enough time around Anakin to be affected by his overwhelming force ability's. its established that a mind trick cannot work on a strong mind, fair enough. under normal circumstances water also cannot penetrate rock (I'm using an analogy, just go with it) ... but when you add time into the mix, water can grind a mountain into a canyon. I think the same is true about the Jedi mind trick. even a strong mind can succumb after enough time, the force basically eroding the will of the...victim?...victim. Anakin spent a long LONG time protecting padmé and presumably thinking constantly "god i love padmé ... please love me back! love me...LOVE ME!". i think slowly he turned her, against her better judgment, to loving him using the force. this erosion of will could also have been what weakened her during child birth. dying from a broken heart? that's just bad writing... dying because a powerful space wizard has been screwing with your very soul to a point where your will is all but broken makes more sense especially when you factor the dark side into things.

Oh dear, my toes curled so much at the Padme/Anakin 'love scene' (the sand . . . aaaaaagh) they ended up over the back of my head. George Lucas undeniably has a great imagination and vision, but script writer he ain't. To be fair, he has admitted that himself - here's an idea George, outline your ideas to a more capable writer and get them to polish it up into a coherent, non-cringy dialogue, not like he can't afford to hire someone decent is it? The middle three films, Anakin's journey to the DARK SIDE had so much potential to be cinema magic but got totally lost in the technology of the special effects which seemed to be all G.L. was interested in but as we all know by now, you need more than outstanding effects to make a stunning film. For me, story comes first, including decent dialogue/character interplay, followed by good characterisation and character chemistry, largly down to hiring good/interesting/competent/likeable actors. Splashing out wads of cash and spending it in all the wrong places will give you an initial impact but no longevity, I can't really say I am dying to go back and watch those middle three again, the dialogue is obviously terrible and don't get me started on Jar-Jar Binks, ugh . . .

Perhaps folks clued into Hollywood knew of her hot affair with Harrison back in 1977, but the book was the first I'd heard of it. Do you think that maybe their great chemistry was more than acting? Maybe some of their real life chemistry was showing up on film. I also blame George Lucas, who has both writer and director credit for how badly Anakin/Padme did.

Yeah, and considering his disappointment in all other relations, it would be somewhat sensible if he "helped" a bit with her falling for him to be sure. But that most likely is not what they were going for.

I'd suggest a more motherly relationship, given age gap, how you would transition from that. Or, a stronger, queen/ body guard angle at least it would have created tension.

Okay Ursa....... it is then. The line spoken by Padme , "it makes me feel uncomfortable," is one of those notorious lines which just doesn't work for me . Padme could have replied "because i asked you not to, please Anakin." It makes no sense that Padme goes and falls head over heels in love with him then. I dunno...... I'm probably asking too much. There probably wasn't enough time in the space of one or two movies to flesh out a whole "War and Peace," style love story . But I'm pretty much as sure as damnit that there are better ways to explain how Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala love each other so much and for that natter why she dies after giving birth. It's one of many lazy kop out points which the prequels and the sequels too.

It’s already been written as a Shakespeare play and the books are awesome. They’re written by Ian Doescher “William Shakespeare’s Star Wars” Part the First: The Phantom of Menace for example. I’d highly recommend.

This is what Anakin SHOULD be. He falls because he was already vulnerable, he becomes bad because he has the tendency for bad things (his past, indeed, cemented it a lot). And, of course, he is somewhat too clingy but seriously, compared to HAN?! Han literally forced himself on Leia (see Satya Venugopal's comment), AND Han's older (29 BBY? Damn, ten years older, 32yo at V episode), while Anakin is just a teenager with usual problems of self-control expectable from a teenager (again, Jedi Order not exactly being a good psychological therapy place doesn't help with that) - and Padmé, being somewhat older, understands him being young and untempered, even too much so - which eventually kills her when Palpatine guides him to fall to his worst traits, already present in him.

"I really love the Empire Strikes Back and I want to hug it, but if I went on about all the things I liked about it, we'd be here all day." Please do this video. My love for SW really suffered when I left the theater after watching TPM, trying to convince myself I wasn't disappointed... 😢 And I was one of those kids who got all the EU books I could. Anything that can help rekindle my love affair with the original trilogy is more than welcome.

To be honest, as much as I don't like thoese movies, I could kinda feel some chemistry in 50 shades. Some sort of "we are in this hell together" - bonding between the actors. And the more cheesy and cringy it got, the more they shined if you could read in their faces, that they don't even try to take it serious any more.

Star Wars is a fun adventure, with hyperdrives and space wizards and good-vs-evil, but it is not the greatest writing ever filmed and treating the OT as such does the rest of the franchise a disservice. What saves a lot of the awful dialogue in the OT is the chemistry between the characters/actors, which isn't just missing but doesn't exist between Anakin and Padmé--I do wonder if the story had been tweaked and Anakin made much older in TPM, so that the two actors could've worked together on the first film so that they might've have a more natural relationship when it came to filming the second if that might've saved it, but who knows.

There are so many reasons that the prequels are trash that I can't list them. You absolutely nailed what was wrong between Anakin and Padme, though that just scratches the surface.
@MrAlsachti
@MrAlsachti Жыл бұрын
Thank you for another moralistic commentary on the internet. Qualifying awkward dialog and clumsy behavior as "creepy" and "gross". When Padme says "Please don't look at me like that.", with this tone of voice, we are supposed to understand that she loves him, has difficulty to resist him. "Why not?" is therefore a quite normal thing to say if you are expecting this moment to end with a passionate kiss. But then Padme answers coldly "It makes me feel uncomfortable", and we realise that we (and Anakin) misinterpreted her words, that they were supposed to be taken literally. That's not a so bad dialog, in fact. Moreover, saying that you should not attempt to say certain things to women if you don't have the charm of Harrison Ford is rather hurtful for all the men that don't have the charm of Harrison Ford (quite a lot, actually). "I don't think she likes me watching her" is not really something an abuser would be concerned about, quite the contrary (except if Anakin was masturbating while saying it, I don't remember the scene that well). It could have been better written, sure ("I don't feel comfortable watching her", then Obiwan answering "No, Anakin, you think that SHE doesn't like you watching her, that's what makes you uncomfortable", Anakin looking vulnerable and Obiwan psychologist ), but that does not make Anakin a pervert and an abuser.

It would've helped had they condensed Phantom and Clones into one movie, then had Episode II be based DURING the clone wars. Finally, having Revenge of the Sith more or less unchanged

@@Danbo22987 I agree to a point. Having Phantom and Clones as a singular movie kick off the prequels and Ep II during the Clone Wars would've been amazing, but Revenge of the Sith I would've invested more in Padme's role in forming the eventual Rebel Alliance and her ties with the Organa's further stretched out. Having her die of a broken heart feels off for her character.
