1:27 It's amazing to me how they manage to give the illusion of the sheer mass of that miniature with like the speed at which it falls and the impact. That's a lost art, right there.
@edd4816
@edd4816 3 жыл бұрын
Physical models definitely have the edge over even the best cgi in this way. I'd hazard a guess that they filmed the miniature falling with a high frame rate, then slowed it down when playing it back to create that impression of size and mass

Sadly time = money in the movie and film industry. That's why CGI was invented and it's done wonders, but then you watch old style like this and realize something had to be lost.

I got this memory of my father, who died in 2007: we just got back home from the movies and I tell him how it seemed weird to me that such a thin cable could make such a big machine fall down. I was 8 years old. His reply is: "well, it was a f...... strong cable!". Now I'm 46, but everytime I think about that, I smile and my eyes get wet :)

It's not a smooth motion, but you know the old style actually conveys the sheer weight of the machine just by how unsmooth it walks. You know on a visual scale this thing is meant to be massive, but it's movement just drives it home when its own legs struggle to keep its heavy mass up where it is otherwise there'd be a lot more of 1:27 this.

I recall reading that in one of the Star Wars films, the Imperial Walkers were animated by the incredibly tedious process of an employee under the floor opening a trap door, making one slight movement to the walker's legs, returning to the under-floor space, waiting for that change to be photographed and repeating many times.

@richardched6085
@richardched6085 5 жыл бұрын
Whatever shield System the AT-AT had that made it immune to Blasters was rendered useless or was disabled when the Walker tipped over. The crash probably cracked the neck open enabling a well placed Blaster volley to enter the Walker itself and detonate close enough to it's Fusion Reactor causing such a large explosion. Luke did a similar thing by throwing a Grenade into the Troop bay which did enough damage to completely obliterate the head of the Walker but not enough to do the same to the main chassis. And Lightsabers can cut through pretty much anything so....

The neck is the weak point, atleats that's what wikipedia says
@k-874
@k-874 4 жыл бұрын
They aim for the neck which is the almost no armor part of the AT-AT, the reason no other AT-AT blows up by getting shot in the neck is because the pilots always cover the neck by facing the heavily armored head to the direction of the Airspeeder shooting the neck since it has enough range to completely cover the neck, so when the AT-AT are immobilized and completely disabled, the neck is fully exposed and they have no way of covering it using the head so, free kill...

You have to remember how truely massive Stardestroyers are in the Star Wars universe. Even those things beeing 30m tall are tiny dots inside an empire Stardestroyer. Considering how they land and lift, that was never explained in the official movies. But it's easy to imagine having booster rockets attached or small landing vehicles just for the job. In episode 1-3 we see transporters that unpack and unload hundreds or thousands of human side droids each. It is not far fetched to imagine something similar for ATATs. These legs also look like they could be folded, making the transport even easier.

Yes its iconic and really fucking awesome, but man a lot of you have to realize that the special effects and all that arent perfect. The stop motion is choppy yet impressive for its time, but there is zero chance that its “master cinematography” or any of that. People use the cgi to attack to prequels so its only fair bring up the original trilogy’s effects, ya know? I mean you can literally see a stick coming up from bottom of the set to knock over the AT-AT at 1:28

people saying how good this looks compared to modern stuff are kind of just plain wrong. It's not even that good stop motion. You're just saying that because you like to show you know what stop motion is. It's awesome, yes, but it's not better than modern graphics

@@journeythroughtherails5294 Ah, to be fair it is a common misconception that the stick is there to tip if over. I have the hand book of the walker and it says it a hydraulic
