@Michael Stoica umm, in the story that he told Anakin, it was stated that Sidious was taught *everything Plagueis knew about the force* before Sidious killed him. So, that *definitely* means he knows how to cheat death, too. Arguably, that's how Darth Vader survived his and Obi-Wan's battle on Mustafar. A much more plausible explanation than that broken heart stuff that canonically made Padmè die. And to do this (with a bit of Darth Vader's unintentional help), he drained the life force of Padmè Amidala and put it into Darth Vader. The Legend of Darth Plagueis the Wise literally just had the opposite effect when Sidious helped Anakin "cheat death".

Duel of the Fates was played during three pivotal moments of the prequels. Moments that would have changed the course of the story dramatically with either outcome. In TPM, it was played during Maul's fight with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, symbolizing the battle for control over the destiny of Anakin Skywalker. That was the first fight for Anakin's fate, and although the light side seemed to win, Qui-Gon's death meant the death of the mentor Anakin deserved, resulting in the Dark Side losing the battle that would ultimately win them the war. The second time was during Anakin's speeder bike trip across Tatooine, in an attempt to find his mother. Here, Anakin's soul, his destiny, is entirely in his hands, and what he ended up finding would test his ability to either let go of his pain, or give into his rage and bring the Dark Side that much closer. Without Qui-Gon (who himself reacted with dread from the netherworld), Anakin couldn't properly process his grief, and it would set up his need to protect Padme from the same fate. The third and final time was here, Yoda vs. Palpatine, the last-ditch effort by the Jedi to stop the Sith before Anakin's fate was sealed forever. Here, Yoda tried to confront the creature that was the Dark Side and cut off its head, potentially freeing Anakin. But the beast proved to be far too strong, and Yoda knew he couldn't risk dying there. Had he carried on, there's a chance he would have died, he would never have learned how to return from beyond through the Force, never would have taught Obi-Wan how to do it, and ultimately, never would have been able to help Obi-Wan guide Luke to undoing the evil of the Sith--an evil that could have been stopped in the past two occasions, had things played out differently. The Duel of the Fates was really the fight for the soul of Anakin Skywalker.

The symbolism of them fighting in the main senate room is excellent. The Jedi and Sith are going toe-to-toe with each other in their most critical conflict of modern times, but the empty pods all around really reflect how ultimately, the galaxy is not seeing. That room represents every member world of the Republic, and its emptiness is a pretty nice metaphor for how none of them know what's going on. Sidious throwing them at Yoda and into each other is an amazing parallel for how he really feels about the planets and people they represent; they're all pawns for him to manipulate to help destroy the Jedi. He doesn't care if he makes them crush each other in the process; he just needs to get rid of his rivals no matter what. At the same time, Yoda throws one back; even the Jedi would regretfully cause the downfall of others to preserve their order if they felt they had to, selfless code or not. Adherence to their morals is no longer an option when extinction is trying to bite them in the throat.

@oli14283 жыл бұрын
Yoda also disarmed palpatine during their lightsaber duel. It’s funny as palpatine knew his only choice was using the force but when palpatine is using his maximum power on yoda, yoda just absorbs it with the look of I can take this all day and palpatine looks shocked and afraid. One of my favourite fights in Star Wars, it just epitomises how palpatine had already won and was obviously only scared of yoda who could kill him and ruin his plans.
@darthdistortion19342 жыл бұрын
This is actually false, in the novelization from the moment they started fighting Sidious began to grow with the dark side as a result of the fighting. Yoda about halfway through realised that Sidious was getting stronger and he would've lost, which is why he fled at the end Yoda would've beaten him in lightsaber combat though, this is true. Palpatine has mastered all seven forms but actually despises lightsaber combat and believes it's beneath him, which is why he resorted to using the force exclusively. You can see the same pattern in his fight with Maul in TCW
@alexgoga22102 жыл бұрын
@@darthdistortion1934 That is not really how it works. Getting stronger in the force doesn't just mean stronger force abilities, it also means being stronger in lightsaber duels, especially considering that Darth Sidious and Yoda used the force to enhance their physical capabilities during combat. This, paired with Darth Sidious being a master in all 7 forms and thus also being the master of the form which most naturally countered Yoda's and would have been most suitable for the terrain means that it would be difficult to foresee who was better with the lightsaber. Darth Sidious despised lightsabers, but was by no means not one of the best lightsaber users.

If you watch this you’ll see Palpatine doesn’t want to fight Yoda. He keeps trying to distance himself from Yoda and he tried to flee in the beginning. That’s why he kept throwing the chamber seats at Yoda because Yoda beat him and disarmed him when they were close and probably would’ve killed him if he didn’t keep a distance from Yoda. Yoda is more powerful.
@gnc6238 ай бұрын
I don't think it is that straightforward. Yoda and Sidious are pretty evenly matched, and honestly, with Sidious being the maybe more slightly powerful of the two. But it's all about perspective. From this fight, Yoda had everything to gain, but Sidious had everything to lose. All of the decades of planning and scheming had just come to fruition, and even though he might have been able to beat Yoda, it would have been foolish to risk everything he just accomplished in a single duel if he didn't have to. That's why he tried to get away. But once he realized he couldn't, he of course faced him and probably relished in the chance to be personally responsible for the Grand Master's end.
@Hellothere-gg8id8 ай бұрын

*consults midi-chlorian count records* Also taking into account the nature of The Force, which in their hubris neither the Jedi nor the Sith fully utilize let alone fully understand, who "won" at this place and time cannot be answered because that would be a reductionist assessment. The Force, it compels, it guides (or manipulates) people to do things. The Force was in a quite imbalanced state due to many events occurring simultaneously on Coruscant but also rippling to the very edges of the galaxy and beyond as this battle was taking place. For a lot of fans who grew up on the OT, there was this big debate about if Yoda was BSing Luke in ESB about the dark side not being stronger, just "quicker, easier, more seductive." A lot of people thought it was just Jedi BS because pretty much all we see in the OT is that the dark side definitely looks stronger. Then we get to see this fight which pretty much puts the whole thing to bed. Yoda goes toe to toe with the Emperor and even gets the upper-hand on a few occasions. It pretty much ends up in a draw. There's a lot of these little details that people who grew up with the Prequels can't appreciate because they had all of it as one unit.

So noticed a lot of comments about how Yoda should have won or how it was even, and actually it wasn't. The novel does a much better job at explaining this since it reveals Yoda's internal thoughts during this fight. During his fight with Sidious, he realized no matter what the outcome the Jedi would lose. If Sidious won he could just tell everyone Yoda had tried to kill him and the Jedi were taking over just like he said earlier when he formed the empire and thus only making it more believable that he was right and the Jedi were evil. But even if Yoda won the galaxy would just see it as the Jedi taking out their leader and wanting to rule just like Sidious had said earlier when he formed the empire. No matter the outcome that day Yoda and the Jedi had lost. The only way to win was to play the long game and let Sidious expose himself as the tyrant he truly was even though it meant letting evil rule for a time

@Taramafor Haikido True, but the thing is that Jedi almost never seek to kill their opponent. With them, the opponent fleeing is an acceptable end to a fight. Yoda blocking Sidious' escape and directly challenging him is not the typical Jedi way. He wants to fight and kill him, which shows just how serious the situation is.
@jg73324 ай бұрын
Sidious has such frightening lightsaber dueling feats: 1. He mastered all 7 forms of lightsaber combat. Under his tutelage, Darth Maul became a nearly unstoppable duelist and martial artist 2. Fought on par against both Maul and Savage and gained the upper hand, managing to separate them, killing the former while toying with him and besting the latter while he was wielding two lightsabers 3. Defeated three Jedi Masters with ease - each of them formidable duelists and powerful in the Force in their own right - and go toe to toe with Mace Windu, the practical champion of the Jedi Order. He even managed to briefly gain the upper hand until Mace utilized Vaapad on him and ultimately disarmed him. I generally believe George Lucas’ claim that Mace legitimately defeated Palps while Palps fought with all his strength. However, Mace thought that the power of Vaapad could only stalemate Palpatine. 4. Almost fought on par with Yoda for an extended period of time before Yoda defeated and disarmed him, forcing Palpatine to rely on the Force for the rest of the confrontation 5. In Legends, during the events of Dark Empire, Sidious, in a clone body, engaged and defeated post ROTJ Luke Skywalker in a one on one lightsaber duel in his clone labs on Byss. He barely lost to Luke in their second encounter. It should be noted that Luke’s victory was also added by the fact that he was boosted by Leia’s Force Harmony. Overall, Sidious was practically one of the best Sith Swordmasters of all time. The only duelists in history who have ever defeated in him lightsaber combat are Mace Windu, Yoda and Luke Skywalker. Galen Marek/Starkilker also managed to fight on par with and defeat Palps in their duel on the Death Star, although he had to use the Force, like in his duels with Shaak Ti and Darth Vader (two of the greatest swordmasters of their time) in order to do compete against the elder Sith Lord.

I like how they show the differences in philosophy and temperament between these two masters when they're throwing the senate platforms at each other: Sidious uses the Force to spam one attack after the other, not caring whether most of them miss because he only needs one to get through and he is confident that his power is too great for him to tire himself, in a telekinetic equivalent of hacking and slashing quickly but wildly with your weapon to overwhelm your opponent through sheer savagery. Yoda uses the Force to dodge and shield himself, puts away his weapon because he knows it won't help here, quickly regains his peace and harmony despite being inches away from getting flattened, and spins the massive object almost as if he's just using it as a meditation exercise before launching it into a single, perfectly-judged attack that Sidious knows he won't be able to resist. A nice illustration of Sith passion vs Jedi calm.

Another cool point I heard was that Palp uses the easy way by exploiting gravity to simply throw down stuff at Yoda. Yoda who is standing below has to fight against gravity to get that platform to hit Sidious. It's MUCH harder. The dark side is the easy way, destroying stuff is easier.
@mzytryck Жыл бұрын
@@JohnDowson100 I really like your interpretation of that, I hadn't thought of their physical positioning that way. Now that I think about it, their positions could also contrast their philosophies; Sith want to be omnipotent rulers who crush any opposition under their heels, so Sidious (dressed in his ornate emperor's robes) uses the senate platforms (seats of the galaxy's political powerhouses) to literally elevate himself while weaponising those symbols of debate and discussion to flatten his enemies and leave the place of democratic government in ruins, and is clearly having the time of his life doing so. Jedi know their role is to serve humbly while enduring and redirecting whatever life throws at them, and so we have tiny Yoda (dressed in simple robes no different than any peasant or Padawan) skillfully dodging galactic civilisation crashing down around him like a mouse dodging furiously stamping feet, right up until he sees his opportunity to do something about it, which he does with no anger or pleasure, just a "this is a dirty job but someone's got to do it" sense of conviction that gives him the will to (as you point out) act against the force of gravity and his enemy together. I may be reading more into this than the filmmakers actually intended, but even if some of the symbolism is accidental it still works out nicely.

Although palpatine wins this engagement by surviving to consolidate his newly established empire. but I think it’s absolutely undeniable that Yoda in relation to the actual battle itself was the clear winner. He managed to disarm palpatine of his lightsaber and kept him on the back foot for the entire fight. And to finish it off Yodas ability to absorb the force lightning still managed to remain superior to palpatines force lightning itself especially shown in the body language as seen in the final moments of the duel. Yoda was simply unlucky because he is smaller he got flung further away and was unable to continue the fight. I’m not saying Yoda is vastly more powerful than palpatine because in raw ability both are very much near equals but Yoda was still in my opinion the slightly stronger force wielder and far more wise and knowledgeable of what the force is in substance.

It was never stated in the movies but I sincerely doubt the jedi were the only remaining force users left. I'm positive there was still sith around.

@@BansheeKing22 I agree. Given that the Sith as a group were dead for hundreds of years, there would be very small collectives of them keeping a low profile. I would love to see a film or short show about how the few Sith survived during the republic and how the remaining Jedi lived after Order 66.

I like that they showed Yoda having the advantage in saber combat. Sidious was grunting and struggling when they locked sabers for a moment while Yoda remained relatively calm. Yoda even apparently disarms Sidious. But then Sidious really shines with force throw which is a dark side power, putting Yoda on the defensive. The battle finally culminates in a test of raw force power, which ultimately proves a stalemate. Overall, I’d say Yoda has the slight advantage against Sidious if they were to battle on neutral ground. Neither is significantly stronger in the force than the other, but Yoda does have more saber experience combined with his small size making him a menace to fight.
@clorkmagnus4 ай бұрын
Smaller size usually means much shorter reach. Yoda was better at using the force to move around than Sidious. They are roughly even however. Yoda is probably barely better to the point the outcome is unclear unless they fight till the end.
