I said this to Delta’s customer service the other day. These airline points have zero real-world value. They can make 20,000 be worth $1 or $2,000. Smh. I noticed this discrepancy just trying to book a flight and was getting wild differences.

This is what our government is worried about and spending money investigating compared to alllll the other issues that could use the manpower and funding.
@daniel-panek3 ай бұрын
... The government should be cracking down on stuff like this and other stuff. There is major lack of transparency and harms consumers. The issue is that the government doesn't do enough of this. And depending on who is in, the methodology is to REMOVE regulations so that there are no rules to follow and it makes it so much worse over the long run. What do you think has been happening for the last 40 years?
@gkundo3 ай бұрын
This isn't the only thing the DOT is doing. And if the major bureaus aren't thinking about consumers rights and fairness, well, 50,000 points can easily fall to the value of $1 overnight. And this isn't just about points. When the government is thinking of other ways to protect the consumer in all facets of their lives, in this case, transportation related, be grateful. If the DOT didn't regulate the airlines in regards to refunds, consumers would still be getting screwed over everyday. Think about how many people fly PER DAY, and the number of changes/cancellations and these BIG corporations just throw up the middle finger when they already have your money. These issues are massive and play a huge role in the consumer economy and consumer protections. You may think airline rewards points are small because you haven't even looked into the big picture. The amount of people using credit cards in the US is astronomical, and points are a major marketing tool to get people to use certain credit cards, especially when it's travel related-- in this case, with airlines. Think about the amount of spending Americans do every year, and then how much those points are worth, nationwide. Then think about how many consumers there are that are affected by the point system. How is this NOT a major issue? Comments like yours are totally narrow sighted. There are many agencies and each one has a function of oversight. They shouldn't be focusing on only ONE issue. Your comment doesn't even make sense. People that talk like you are just deflectors. you might think of one major issue they should focus on. But then another person of your limited intellect will say the same "why focus on that? They need to focus on this!" and it just goes on and on with your kind of people.

It's not a scam its just not really worth it anymore what the high demand and very limited supply of 'free' seats. Sometimes its just not worth staying up until midnight only for you to try to snag a flight 10 months into the future not knowing if you might get the days off or not. Not only that the fees hike really makes it less and less worth the hassle. I rather just use the points for hotel or gift cards.

US Bank already has the altitide reserve, which is better than 4%. I don't even carry the card, just put it in your mobile app and you get 3x for every transaction, redeemable at 1.5x on their travel portal. Which means its effectively 4.5% return on everything, no checking required. Also, they have PP Restaurant access, with a cap of 8 visits per year. I'm slowly moving to team cash back, which is why i follow this.🐧

Point devaluations need to come with compensation as a deterrent for trying to screw over the consumer. It's great the DOT has been tackling the bullying that goes on from these major airline companies. For decades, travelers have been screwed over from changes/cancellations/delays/etc. When these companies have your money, they just throw up the middle finger and dare you to sue them and go up against their team of hundreds of lawyers. Thanks to the DOT thinking about all the many facets of daily consumer life in regards to transportation, they first issued new regulations for mandatory refunds. And now they're taking on the point system, which also plays a major role in the travel/flyer economy. So many flyers, so many consumers, so many spenders. This is a major issue because companies use these programs to attract consumers and how credit cards also encourage spending/utilization. And this falls under the illegal act of bait and switch-- and the DOT is taking this on FOR the everyday consumer within their scope of jurisdiction-- TRANSPORTATION.

See but why focus only on the flagship business product? Those products present meaningful revenue to the airline, but a JFK-SLC not so much. I regularly get pretty good domestic economy mileage redemption that is meaningfully cheaper than 1 CPP, which often goes unsaid in these “devaluation” videos.
@SightseeMC1233 ай бұрын

Opportunity cost is not only affected by the difference between what you're earning in interest on your current savings account and 4.1%, but also how much cash back you're getting on your current card. 4% is great, but not necessarily worth the opportunity cost if you already have 2.5 or 3% on another card. I have 5.1% back on my current savings account, 5% back on a lot of major spending categories with various no-fee cards, and 2.5% back on my catch-all card (which also has no annual fee). I don't think the math works out in favor of a change in my case. Enjoy your videos! Thanks! 🐧

Mayor Pete isn't dumb. So I agree with TT MIA and expect improvements. The goal here is a bit more transparency and competition, but I think pissing off the airlines and aspirational travelers like ourselves is bad. Also a lot of non-USians get US credit cards because their local markets are over-regulated in this area. I'm Team Travel all the way. 🐧
@Darth_Zamiel3 ай бұрын
🐧 I'm 100% team travel. United miles aren't that bad if used right. They suck for flying to or from the US or on United itself. But for partner airlines where your A and B are both outside the US, there are still some reasonable redemptions to be found if your creative, flexible, and patient.
