Loved this conversation! Thanks y’all! To Scru’s point, I think it’s super important to keep reminding people this is weird. It’s not ok. It’s not acceptable. As Touré said you should NOT force a kid to think / speak etc about that stuff before they choose to. And obviously the way AK was doing it was wildly inappropriate and super gross!

@@MaynardsSpaceship There's a lot of difficulties going on around the language of all this. I've been trying to talk about FD Signifier's angle on homophobia's part in Ak's actions, but my comments have been removed twice. That being said, when I talked about it in the live chat, the mods were actively agreeing with me! I don't know if youtube is doing it or what. There's always a lot of enforced "algo-speak" from the platforms and all, so I dunno. But yeah. Ak is grooming children, even if not sexually for his own gain, as a participant in really twisted cultural shit.

Hands down my favorite channel on hip hop. A small constructive critique if I may - is times like @1:21:35 onwards for the next few minutes…I felt bad for Scru because he clearly had something he wanted to offer , but couldn’t get a word in at all ; raising his hand and everything…I believe at one point he started speaking and was just interrupted and talked over ( which actually happened numerous times during the conversation , but just seemed particularly egregious here ). It feels like cats are so intent on making their point - in this case to the detriment of the actual guest. I would just like to see a bit more cognizance there. But again - my favorite channel on all things hip hop !🤘🏽

Around the 40-41 min mark. I think the only way to view this situation in line with homophobia is the fact that Ak yes was being predatory but egged Nour on to engage w homophobia. He asks Nour if he’d let a guy smash and wanted to hear “ew no” but instead got “I’m 15.” So correct in the thought that yes we shouldn’t align predators with gay people BUT ak also weaponized homophobia

As a Puerto Rican from the Bronx who’s family were DJs in the 70s and played hip hop and rapped I want to say this. Speaking for my family. We never once even thought to question the idea that hip hop is a black art form. Many of us are black!! I am not. But my uncle the DJ is a black Puerto Rican. Most Jamaicans are black. We have to understand that there definitely was an influence of Caribbean culture specifically Jamaican and Puerto Rican/dominican. And we shouldn’t ignore that. We can also say that black American sounds of disco and funk and R&B were sampled and set the foundation and tone for hip hop. It’s a complex subject but my point is this. Hip hop is first and foremost black and it’s American. it also has significant sometimes overlooked contributions from other cultures that existed in the melting pot that was the Bronx in the 70s.

I disagree with Toure’s take. No one is saying that other cultures didn’t influence hip-hop, right? However, the bottom line is that Black Americans and Black American Culture alone started and created hip-hop. End of story. There’s nothing else to add to it. It is what it is.

Homophobia is a BIG part of why Ak is getting packed out now. This man had multiple domestic assault and gRAPE alligationd, with tapes and video showing atleast part of that. It barely made any motion online. It took this to get him outta here. Same thing with Diddy. Years and years of cases, allegations, even after the hotel assault video came out it was kinda quiet. It took gay-adjacent crime allegations against Diddy for the whole culture to cut him off. No homo is turned to no Diddy now. This is a bigger issue, but homophobia has a MASSIVE role to play in this.

Yeah like its important to remember throughout all this that this is something a lot of young men go through. Its not always as crazy and explicit it was in this case but the experience of boys having these conversations with mem where theyre teased and subjected to these conversations about sex is one a lot of people have. And it's self perpetuating because often people who experienced it will internalize it as some kind of right of passage and then do the same to the boys in their life

Love the nuanced conversations here. Toure stays glazing for the Takeover/Ether battle for Jay-Z, lol. Ether!! Also Toure there are several clips online from Kool Herc crediting Black Americans & how his sound system came to be & he says from 2 Black guys from America in his neighborhood. Old clips of Crazy Legs are different then his recent recollection too. There is also a couple of clips of elder statesman from Jamaica speaking on how they at one time only listened to Black Americans music in Jamaica, & how it inspired the sound of Reggae music. The individual elements of Hip Hop started well before the 70s which can also be seen online, clips from 30s-60s. These elements later came together , via migration of Black Americans from the south to the north and formed into what we now call Rap/Hip Hop. Other communities later on in the 70s contributed. Please don't allow this erasure. This question of who created Hip Hop was not up for question until the last few years. No one was questioning this in the 70s-2010s. It's intentional & divisive. You heard no elements of Reggae or Spanish music in the creation of Hip Hop. This is a Black American art from just like Rock, Blues, Jazz , Country etc.

1:17:09 Ok So this Narrative needs to be stopped immediately. The Bronx having a few people from the Islands doesn't mean that the Cultural roots of HiP Hop come from their homelands. In fact everything about American black culture before hip hop has effected every other culture in the so called diaspora. At best it's a feedback loop, at the least it's people coming here and adopting our already established Black American culture. From Blues, to Jazz and Rock n Roll to funk to Hip Hop.. nothing about any of those art forms are influenced the degree that is being claimed especially the Child Of Funk Which Is Hip Hop. Krs One Is the Only Rapper to emulate Patios and Reggae culture in Rap music. The last Poets are From America, The watts Prophets are From America, Gil Scott Heron Is From America, James Brown is from America. And as far as the block party credit and false association with Jamaican sound system culture, there's a famous Motown song By Martha and The Vandelles Called Dancing in the Streets 1964 @TheCompanyMan

Toure loves putting his straw (man) in the Rap Latte. He really had that whole Jamaica is a part of hip hop argument with himself.

This is a different type of interaction with kids in the gaming VR world but the difference is I choose to be an adult AK choose to be a weird creeper. When I’m playing my oculus I don’t be on games where kids are also playing. I was playing Population 1 and those kids was talking mad 💩 and were disrespectful AF 😭 I started to get mad and was bout to cuss them out but then thought “wtf am I doing I’m 53 and about to go back n forth with sone kids” so I don’t play population 1 I’ll instead play the new Assassins Creed and Resident Evil for VR in story mode. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’m saying this to say AK seemed really comfortable talking to a kid like the way he was so it tells me he’s done it before just never got caught. That tells me he’s 35 but acting like a kid whereas myself I choose not to interact with kids in the gaming world. Even though I was only going to cuss them out back I knew it wasn’t the right thing to do because they’re only KIDS.

@1:32:46 & @1:35:35 people have been trying to include fashion and knowledge as pillars of Hip-Hop. I don’t disagree because of how Hip-Hop has progressed and some traditional aspects of it have been phased out or transformed. Graffiti seemed like its own art style that was happening parallel to Hip-Hop and isn’t uniquely ours. And like Scru said, Breaking is more niche nowadays but dance can never be separated from Hip-Hop.
